An Analysis on Newly Introduced English Verb in Oxford English Dictionary in 2016-2018: Levin’s Taxonomy of Verb Classification and Verbnet

Levin (1993) argues that the behaviour of verbs is determined by word meaning which is directly linked to the expression and interpretation of its argument. Based on this statement, Levin classified verbs into 48 classes and VerbNet, an English verb lexicon was created based on the extension of Levin’s taxonomy of verb classification (VC). Therefore, this study presents the classification of the updated English verbs of 2016 to 2018 in the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) to examine the relevance of Levin’s VC and VerbNet in the recently added repertoire of verbs. In Addition, the study seeks to find out the new verb classes introduced in this study. This study uses a mixed-method to identify and classify the verbs. To conclude, this study found that both classifications were applicable and relevant in 14 new main verb classes introduced to classify the verbs that did not belong to Levin’s VC and VerbNet. Hence, this contributes to the body of knowledge as the newly introduced verb classes could be used based on the given semantic and syntactic conditions.

On Dictionaries and Gender Representations

Placed at the interface between metalexicography and gender studies, this short article discusses issues concerning gender representations in present-day dictionaries. Evoking recent controversies regarding the representation of gender-related terms such as “cisgender” or “woman” in The Oxford English Dictionary, the essay goes on to discuss the prescriptive/descriptive opposition concerning lexicographical representations, taking its cue from previous approaches, which suggest re-envisaging the prescriptive/descriptive dyad as a continuum (Straaijer, 2009; Wilton 2014), or replacing this traditional binary model with a nonbinary approach (Nossem, 2018; Turton, 2020).

РОЗШИРЕННЯ СЛОВНИКОВОГО СКЛАДУ АНГЛІЙСЬКОЇ МОВИ У 2020 РОЦІ

Дослідження мови як динамічної соціальної системи невідривно пов’язане з аналізом зовнішніх факторів, які стимулюють мову до змін. Особливе місце серед таких факторів посідає зв’язок мови із суспільством, зміни життя якого призводять до появи в мові неологізмів. За результатами аналізу останніх публікацій і колекцій «Слово року», англомовні неологізми, утворені протягом двох останніх десятиліть, переважно належать до таких тематичних груп, як Інтернет-технології та соціальні комунікації, технічні розробки, політично-економічні умови й реалії, а також кліматичні проблеми й засоби реагування на них. У 2020 році колектив словника Oxford English Dictionary вперше не зміг визначити слово року й натомість оприлюднив доповідь під назвою Words of an unprecedented year. Представлене дослідження має на меті аналіз семантики активно вживаних неологізмів, породжених COVID‑19, і встановлення тематичних груп, до яких вони належать. З-поміж понад 1000 нових лексичних одиниць чи словосполучень, утворених в англійській мові протягом 2020 року, значна частка припадає на одиниці, що позначають коронавірусну хворобу. Інші одиниці залежно від їх предметно-понятійних ознак можна розподілити за кількома тематичними групами. Першу групу утворюють назви нових суспільних об’єднань у тому числі за професійною належністю (наприклад, critical workers, support bubble, childcare bubble, quarantine pod, covidiots, anti-maskers тощо). До другої тематичної групи включаємо лексичні одиниці на позначення нових форм комп’ютерно-опосередкованої взаємодії (наприклад, Zoombie, Zoombombing, covideo parties, quarantini тощо). Третя тематична група містить назви нових технологічних реалій і режимів роботи (наприклад, WFH (working from home), workation, staycation, remote learning, remote working тощо). Таким чином, одну з провідних тенденцій у розширенні словникового складу англійської мови у 2020 році вбачаємо в зосередженості на соціальних зв’язках, що проявляється в активному творенні нової лексики на позначення як міжособистісної взаємодії, так і різних видів колективів. Інша тенденція, на думку автора, полягає в увазі до організації робочого процесу в нових умовах.

Lexical Borrowing in the Light of Digital Resources: Nyet as a Case Study

The mere appearance of a foreign word does not necessarily mark the birth of a loanword, which requires documented usage by the speech community. Relatively little research has been dedicated so far to the “prenatal” stage that would investigate the tentative infiltration of foreign-derived words. Nyet, a borrowing from Russian, is taken as a case in point. Although its first recorded instance in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED3) is dated to 1928, it had been increasingly recognized in English for several decades. This article focuses on textual attestations for nyet discovered in a range of digital resources, including British and American newspaper archives, and discusses their usefulness as potential antedatings for OED3’s entry.

OED and EDD: comparison of the printed and online versions

This paper revisits the issue of the opaque interrelationship between the English Dialect Dictionary (EDD) and the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). While work on OED3, the online version, has been in progress since 2000, the EDD was digitised in three phases between 2006 and 2019. EDD 3.0, with its sophisticated interface, was launched in April 2019. This paper ventures to question the OED’s policy of providing or omitting source evidence for some of its data. After a survey of the unequal aims and structures of the two dictionaries from their beginnings down to the end of OED2 (1989), the focus of the paper is on their relationship with regard to the two online versions, first as described by recent OED editors, and then by examining the interfaces. A quantitative analysis of the lexical variants attributed to Worcestershire in the two dictionaries is used as a test case to show that OED3 has borrowed more data from EDD (Online) than the OED entries attest and the ranking-list of sources misleadingly suggests. The paper critically analyses the OED’s practice of providing source evidence only for quotations, but generally not for (dialectal) variants.

This chapter discusses Clark’s ‘Words in War-Time’ as a distinctive project in its own right. Beginning in 1914, it has an intellectual hinterland that reaches into Victorian Oxford, the philological revolution, and the making of the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED1). Other models of historiography were, however, important, too. The chapter also explores the inspiration Clark drew from his own earlier work on the English Civil War writer Anthony Wood’s Life and Times and John Aubrey’s contemporaneous Brief Lives –especially in relation to their emphasis on the need to register living history with ‘minuteness’ in a process that directs particular attention to its incidental details. Clark’s work on language in World War One proves, in this light, intriguingly experimental, presenting both emulation and resistance in relation to earlier works on language and the narratives of time and change that might be made.

Terms of endearment in English

Terms of endearment enjoy great popularity in all languages to express feelings such as affection and tenderness. The present paper concentrates on the use of these types of words in English. The Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (henceforth the HTOED) serves as a valuable tool to identify the plethora of terms of endearment which became established in English over the centuries.

Cet article s’interroge sur la spécificité de la démarche collaborative en ligne dans les institutions patrimoniales. Il compare l’appel aux bénévoles anonymes lancé par les éditeurs du Oxford English Dictionary à la fin de l’époque victorienne aux initiatives actuelles, plus particulièrement le projet Testaments de Poilus mené depuis 2017 aux Archives nationales et départementales.
