Molecular imprinting is an emerging technology which enables us to synthesize the materials with highly specific receptor sites towards the target molecules. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are a class of highly cross-linked polymer that can bind certain target compound with high specificity. Such techniques have been progressively employed in a wide scope of applications such as development of various analytical techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), liquid chromatography, capillary electro chromatography, binding assays and biosensors, mostly in bio-analytical areas. The aim of this review paper is to give a fundamental description of the molecular imprinted polymer and to give the reader an insight into the main developments are discussed, Particular emphasis will be placed on their role as affinity materials in separation science. Discussing first general aspects in MIP history and preparation and then dealing with various application aspects.

Serum protein electrophoresis is an especially useful method to detect and semi-quantify monoclonal proteins in patients with multiple myeloma and other plasmocyte dyscrasias. The presence of monoclonal protein (M protein) in electrophoretic separation is indicated by a sharp spike in gamma-globulin fraction that is sometimes located in alpha-2-globulins and beta-globulins. Semi-quantification of M protein is a basic method to monitor therapy of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance (MGUS). The purpose of the study was to compare concentrations of M protein obtained by agarose gel (AGE) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) and to evaluate diagnostic usefulness of both electrophoretic techniques for the identification of M protein. The investigations were carried out in the group of 90 patients with monoclonal gammopathies, 42 females and 48 males aged 65±9 years. Patients with monoclonal gammopathies had lower concentrations of monoclonal proteins determined by AGE in comparison to CE. High positive correlation between the results of monoclonal protein concentrations obtained by AGE and CE was observed. Both AGE and CE seem to be equally useful diagnostically in the detection of paraproteins.

In this paper a novel hybrid organic–inorganic amino hybrid material monolithic column for capillary electro chromatography (CEC) is preparation and characterization. The amido hybrid material monolithic column was prepared in situ co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with 3-aminoproplytriethoxysilane (3-APTES) via sol-gel procedure. The all kinds of factors that effect the morphology of monolith column were investigated. The results showed that the structure of monolithic column could be adjusted easily through altering the composition of sol solution.

Micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) has become a popular mode among the several capillary electro-migration techniques. Most drug analysis can be performed by using MEKC because of its wide applicability. Separation of very complex mixtures, determination of drugs in the biological materials, etc., can be successfully achieved by MEKC. This review surveys typical applications of MEKC analysis. Recent advances in MEKC, especially with solid-phase extraction and large-volume sample stacking, are described. Modes of electrokinetic chromatography including MEKC, a separation theory of MEKC, environmental friendly analysis, and selectivity manipulation in MEKC are also briefly mentioned.
