Numerical Simulations of Typhoon Hagupit (2008) Using WRF

We used a mesoscale atmospheric model to simulate Typhoon Hagupit (2008) in the South China Sea (SCS). First, we chose optimized parameterization schemes based on a series of sensitivity tests. The results suggested that a combination of the Kain–Fritsch cumulus scheme and the Goddard microphysics scheme was the best choice for reproducing both the track and intensity of Typhoon Hagupit. Next, the simulated rainfall was compared with microwave remote sensing products. This comparison validated the model results for both the magnitude of rainfall and the location of heavy rain relative to the typhoon’s center. Furthermore, the potential vorticity and vertical wind speed displayed the asymmetric horizontal and tilted vertical structures of Typhoon Hagupit. Finally, we compared the simulation of air–sea turbulent fluxes with estimations from an in situ buoy. The time series of momentum fluxes were roughly consistent, while the model still overestimated heat fluxes, especially right before the typhoon’s arrival at the buoy.

A Characterization of the Delaware Sea Breeze Using Observations and Modeling

Sea-breeze circulations are a prominent source of diurnal wind variability along coastlines throughout the world. For Delaware, the sea breeze is the largest source of variability in the coastal wind field. We developed a detailed, year-round sea-breeze climatology for the Delaware coastline using 9 years of meteorological station data and an objective sea-breeze detection algorithm. Sea-breeze fronts were identified and characterized by timing, speed, and duration as well as the resulting temperature and humidity changes. The observed temperature change associated with the Delaware sea-breeze front varied spatially, as well as with season, time of day, location, and developmental stage of the front. The observed sea breeze also had some unique features because of the location of southern Delaware on the Delmarva Peninsula and the complicated shape of the local coastline. Details of the summertime sea breeze were further explored using simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting Model for June–August of 2000–09. Model-simulated sea-breeze characteristics were then compared with the observed sea-breeze climatology whenever possible. Results suggest that the mesoscale atmospheric model is capable of simulating the complex, observed spatial and temporal characteristics of the Delaware Sea breeze. However, the sea breeze in the model was weaker than that observed and tended to dissipate earlier in the afternoon, making it a challenging phenomenon to detect and characterize in the model. Improved detection and simulation of the sea-breeze fronts will increase our understanding of the impact this regional phenomenal has on the local climate and on the populations living by the coast.

Breeze effects at a large artificial lake: summer case study

Natural lakes and big artificial reservoirs could affect the weather regime of surrounding areas but usually it is difficult to track all aspects of this impact and evaluate its magnitude. Alqueva reservoir, the largest artificial lakes in Western Europe located on the South-East of Portugal, was filled in 2004. This makes it a large laboratory and allows to study the changes in hydrological and geological structures and how they affect the weather in the region. This paper is focused on a case study of the 3 days period of 22–24 July 2014. In order to quantify the breeze effects induced by Alqueva reservoir two simulations with the mesoscale atmospheric model Meso-NH coupled to FLake freshwater lake scheme has been done. The principal difference of this two simulations is in the presence of the reservoir in the input surface data. Comparing two simulations datasets: with and without reservoir, net results of the lake impact were obtained. Magnitude of the impact on the air temperature, relative humidity, and other atmospheric parameters is shown. Clear effect of a lake breeze (5–7 m/s) can be observed during the daytime on the distances up to 6 km away from the shores and up to 300 m over the lake surface. Breeze system starts to form at 9:00 UTC and dissipates at 18:00–19:00 UTC with the arrival of major Atlantic breeze system. It induces specific air circulation that captures the dry air from the upper atmosphere (2–2.5 km) which follows the downstream and redistributes over the lake. It is also shown that the although the impact can be relatively intensive, its area is limited by several kilometers away from the lake borders.

Sensitivity analysis and optimization of a mesoscale atmospheric model

Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στη αριθμητική προσομοίωση ακραίων θερμικών συνθηκών σε περιφερειακή και αστική κλίμακα. Ειδικότερα, ένα σύγχρονο μετεωρολογικό μοντέλο μέσης κλίμακας, το Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), χρησιμοποιήθηκε με σκοπό την ανάλυση και βελτιστοποίηση της αποδοτικότητάς του στην προσομοίωση επεισοδίων καύσωνα και του φαινομένου της Αστικής Θερμικής Νησίδας (ΑΘΝ). Διάφορα πειράματα ευαισθησίας πραγματοποιήθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια μιας σειράς τριών αριθμητικών μελετών. H πρώτη αριθμητική μελέτη έδειξε ότι η προσομοίωση καυσώνων στην μέση κλίμακα εξαρτάται σημαντικά από την α) παραμετροποίηση των συντελεστών επιφανειακής ανταλλαγής θερμότητας στα σχήματα παραμετροποίησης του στρώματος επιφάνειας, β) την προσομοίωση των ροών θερμότητας από τα μοντέλα επιφάνειας της γης, και γ) την παραμετροποίηση της κατακόρυφης ανάμειξης στα σχήματα παραμετροποίησης του ατμοσφαιρικού οριακού στρώματος. Τα αποτελέσματα της δεύτερης αριθμητικής μελέτης έδειξαν ότι η ακριβής και λεπτομερής αναπαράσταση των χρήσεων γης στα αστικά περιβάλλοντα είναι απαραίτητη για την αποτύπωση του φαινομένου της ΑΘΝ. Τέλος, η τρίτη αριθμητική μελέτη ανέδειξε τη σημασία των πολύπλοκων φυσικών διεργασιών που λαμβάνουν χώρα στις πόλεις και επηρεάζουν καταλυτικά την ενδο-αστική κατανομή των θερμοκρασιών. Για την σωστή αναπαράσταση αυτών των διεργασιών είναι η απαραίτητη η σύζευξη του μοντέλου WRF με το μοντέλο αστικού θόλου Single Layer Urban Canopy Model (SLUCM), χρησιμοποιώντας μια τροποποιημένη εξίσωση για τον υπολογισμό της θερμοκρασίας του αστικού εδάφους. Εξίσου απαραίτητη είναι η προσαρμογή των παραμέτρων επιφάνειας και αστική γεωμετρίας στην εκάστοτε περιοχή ενδιαφέροντος έτσι ώστε να επιτυγχάνεται η ρεαλιστική αναπαράσταση του αστικού περιβάλλοντος. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η ανάλυση ευαισθησίας που πραγματοποιήθηκε έδειξε ότι η δημιουργία και εξέλιξη της ΑΘΝ επηρεάζονται καθοριστικά από την ανακλαστικότητα των επιφανειών, την γεωμετρία των αστικών χαράδρων και το ποσοστό αστικής κάλυψης. Η εφαρμογή των βέλτιστων παραμέτρων για την Αθήνα οδήγησε στην σημαντική βελτίωση της απόδοσης του μοντέλου, με τις μειώσεις των θερμοκρασιακών αποκλίσεων να κυμαίνονται από 0.30 έως περίπου 1.60 βαθμούς κελσίου. Το γεγονός ότι οι παράμετροι που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν είναι σύμφωνες με τα πραγματικά χαρακτηριστικά της πόλης παρέχει την βεβαιότητα ότι το μοντέλο WRF έχει βελτιστοποιηθεί κάτω από την συγκεκριμένη διαμόρφωση και μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για την μελέτη και πρόγνωση της ΑΘΝ στην Αθήνα υπό τις συνθήκες ενός θερμότερου κλίματος στο μέλλον.

Measurements by controlled meteorological balloons in coastal areas of Antarctica

An experiment applying controlled meteorological (CMET) balloons near the coast of Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, in January 2013 is described. Two balloons were airborne for 60 and 106 hours with trajectory lengths of 885.8 km and 2367.4 km, respectively. The balloons carried out multiple controlled soundings on the atmospheric pressure, temperature and humidity up to 3.3 km. Wind speed and direction were derived from the balloon drift. Observations were compared with radiosonde sounding profiles from the Halley Research Station, and applied in evaluating simulations carried out with the weather research and forecasting (WRF) mesoscale atmospheric model. The most interesting feature detected by the CMET balloons was a mesoscale anticyclone over the Weddell Sea and the coastal zone, which was reproduced by the WRF model with reduced intensity. The modelled wind speed was up to 10 m s-1 slower and the relative humidity was 20–40% higher than the observed values. However, over the study period the WRF results generally agreed with the observations. The results suggest that CMET balloons could be an interesting supplement to Antarctic atmospheric observations, particularly in the free troposphere.
