Cyanogenic glycosides content as graft compatibility indicator in pear/quince combinations

The objective of this work is to evaluate the concentration of cyanogenic glycosides CGs (amygdalin and prunasin) in the cultivar and rootstock, as an indicator of compatibility in pear grafts. The work consists of two experiments. Experiment 1 evaluated Cascatense/Pyrus Calleryana and Cascatense/EMC combinations. Experiment 2 evaluated the combinations Packham’s Triumph/Adams, Santa Maria/Adams, and Rocha/Adams. The experimental design of the two experiments was randomized blocks with four replications. The evaluations were carried out in the spring and summer of the harvest 2014/2015. The results indicated graft compatibility in the Cascatense/P. Calleryana, Packham’s Triumph/Adams, and Rocha/Adams combinations; slight incompatibility of Santa Maria/Adams, and severe incompatibility of Cascatense/EMC. The obtained results indicate that differences ≥ 20 mg g-1 of CGs between scion and rootstock were correlated with a drastic reduction in vigor, problems of continuity in graft union, low yield, and early defoliation.

Microsatellite Loci Reveal Genetic Diversity of Asian Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) in the Species Native Range and in the North American Cultivars

Pyrus calleryana Decne. (Callery pear) includes cultivars that in the United States are popular ornamentals in commercial and residential landscapes. Last few decades, this species has increasingly naturalized across portions of the eastern and southern US. However, the mechanisms behind this plant’s spread are not well understood. The genetic relationship of present-day P.calleryana trees with their Asian P. calleryana forebears (native trees from China, Japan, and Korea) and the original specimens of US cultivars are unknown. We developed and used 18 microsatellite markers to analyze 147 Pyrus source samples and to articulate the status of genetic diversity within Asian P. calleryana and US cultivars. We hypothesized that Asian P. calleryana specimens and US cultivars would be genetically diverse and would show genetic relatedness. Our data revealed high genetic diversity, high gene flow, and presence of population structure in P. calleryana, potentially relating to the highly invasive capability of this species. Strong evidence for genetic relatedness between Asian P. calleryana specimens and US cultivars was also demonstrated. Our data suggest the source for P. calleryana that have become naturalized in US was China. These results will help understand the genetic complexity of invasive P. calleryana when developing management for escaped populations: In follow-up studies, we use the gSSRs developed here to analyze P. calleryana escape populations from across US.

Structural Pruning in Callery Pear Does Not Change Apparent Branch Union Strength in Seventh Year Static Load Field Testing

Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) is a tree notorious for poor branch union and breakage during storms. Structural pruning is a pruning technique that can be practiced on young trees to strengthen tree branch attachment. Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana ‘Redspire’) was structurally pruned and allowed to grow for 7 years and compared to an unpruned control. A breaking device was used to determine branch strength by providing a static load to simulate a snow or ice load. Branches from pruned and unpruned trees were pulled to failure to observe any difference from pruning. Regardless of the structural pruning treatment, trees that were unpruned were larger in diameter at breast height (DBH) and width at the end of the test. No differences were found in testing branch union strength for either pruned or unpruned trees, suggesting that more time is needed to determine the long-term benefits of structural pruning. Branch tissue moisture content was greater than trunk tissue both in immediate post-harvest testing and in samples over time. Also, branch moisture content observations suggested the time available for field testing branch union strength could be as much as 5 to 9 days after harvest.

Efficacy of five herbicide treatments for control of Pyrus calleryana

Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana Decne.) is rapidly spreading in the United States, gaining attention in the last two decades as a serious invasive pest. Recommended control methods include foliar, basal bark, cut stump, and hack-and-squirt application of herbicides, but there are few published studies with replicated data on efficacy. Four readily available herbicidal active ingredients and a combination of two active ingredients were tested for control efficacy against P. calleryana in old-field areas and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) understory. Basal bark applications (triclopyr, triclopyr + aminopyralid), foliar applications (glyphosate, imazapyr), and a soil application (hexazinone) effectively killed P. calleryana with the exception of hexazinone at one site, where rainfall may not have been optimal. Foliar application of glyphosate provided the most consistent control. Our results demonstrate efficacy of registered herbicide formulations for P. calleryana control in two geographic locations and two habitat types. The need for development of integrated pest management programs for P. calleryana is discussed.

Pyrus calleryana (Callery pear) allometric equations and stand structure in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky

Pyrus calleryana Decne. (Callery pear), a native of eastern Asia, has recently emerged as an important woody invader in much of the eastern U.S. Little is known about its ecology in its new range. Its shade tolerance may be an important indicator of areas it is likely to invade. In this study, allometric equations were first developed to predict aboveground biomass components, including wood, branches, bark, leaves, and fruit, from diameter at stump height (dsh; 25 cm), by destructively harvesting 13 trees, ranging from 0.1 to 19.3 cm dsh. Then, a total of 23 wild-grown stands in the northern Kentucky/southwestern Ohio region were surveyed, with diameters of all woody stems sampled. Pyrus calleryana density, basal area, aboveground biomass, stand density index, size distribution inequality, and importance value were calculated for each site. Two-factor Weibull distributions were fit to diameter distributions. Allometric equations provided good fits for total aboveground biomass as well as individual components. Aboveground biomass levels fell below mean levels of native forest stands found in the US. Stand density indices yielded values typical of shade-intolerant or midtolerant species. Stands with smaller trees generally had steeply declining monotonic diameter distributions, while stands with larger, trees trended toward positively-skewed monotonic distributions. These findings are consistent with a species that is either shade-intolerant or midtolerant. Thus, while this species is expected to invade open or disturbed areas, it is not expected to be an important invader under forest canopies. However, its extended deciduous habit is one shared by other understory woody invaders, and so this may allow it to survive under forest canopies. Management Implications Callery pear, which has been used in landscape plantings for decades, is now being recognized as important woody invader in much of the eastern U.S. However, little is known now about its impact on native forest stands. Here, we developed allometric equations to predict aboveground biomass components, including wood, branches, bark, leaves, and fruit, as well as total aboveground biomass, from diameter at stump height (dsh; 25 cm) measurements; dsh often works better than dbh (diameter at breast height; 1.37 m) with this species because pear stems often fork below breast height. However, there is a strong relationship between dsh and dbh, so these allometric equations can used with dbh measurements. Most biomass equations were log-log regressions, and they were corrected for bias using the UMVU estimator. However, this estimator does not give a ready-to-use equation; the original data must be used along with collected data in an R routine. Thus, we also report equations corrected with the smearing estimate, which, while not as good as the UMVU estimator, performs better than most commonly used estimators. The allometric equations will allow managers to estimate biomass of stands dominated by Callery pear. Diameter distributions from 23 wild-grown stands in the northern Kentucky/southwestern Ohio region were fit to two-factor Weibull distributions, which indicated a species that is either shade-intolerant or midtolerant, which was also indicated by relatively low stand density indices. For managers, this suggests that control efforts for Callery pear should focus on disturbed or open areas, as our results suggest that it will not become an important invader in closed-canopy forests.

Establishment and Early Development of Even-Age Shortleaf Pine–Hardwood Mixtures Using Artificially Regenerated Shortleaf Pine and Various Site Preparation and Release Treatments

Shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata)–hardwood mixtures were once a common forest type on upland sites throughout the southeastern United States. These forest types have declined throughout much of shortleaf pine’s native range. Information on restoring shortleaf pine–hardwood types when a shortleaf pine seed source is not present is lacking. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of four site-preparation and release treatments (control, burn, herbicide, and herbicide and burn) on the development of even-aged mixtures of planted shortleaf pine and natural hardwoods located on the Highland Rim physiographic province of Tennessee, USA. Three years after study establishment, statistical differences among treatments occurred for shortleaf pine survival and basal diameter. Survival was greatest in the herbicide-only treatment. Height and basal diameter growth were greatest in the herbicide and burn treatment. Stem densities were greater in treatments that did not include a herbicide release than those where herbicide was used alone or combined with prescribed burning. The herbicide and burn treatment had the greatest potential after 3 years for developing into a balanced, mixed shortleaf pine–hardwood stand, whereas most treatments had an influx of exotic, invasive species such as Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense) and callery pear (Pyrus calleryana).
