Design and synthesis of new benzofuran-1,2,3-triazole hybrid preservatives and the evaluation of their antifungal potential against white and brown-rot fungi

A series of novel benzofuran-1,2,3-triazole hybrids were synthesized and investigated as fungicidal preservatives. The compounds were evaluated for their antifungal potential against white-rot (Trametes versicolor), dry brown-rot (Poria placenta), and wet brown-rot (Coniophora puteana and Gloeophyllum trabeum) fungi, at different concentrations (500 ppm and 1000 ppm). The tests of the final products (8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e, 8f, and 8g) demonstrated that compound N-((1-(4-fluorobenzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)benzofuran-2-carboxamide (8f) at a concentration of 500 ppm was the most active against wet brown-rot C. puteana (23.86% inhibition) and G. trabeum (47.16% inhibition) fungi. However, testing demonstrated that compounds 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, and 8g at a concentration of 500 ppm did not exhibit acceptable antifungal effects against white-rot T. versicolor and dry brown-rot P. placenta fungi.

Synthesis and activity evaluation of new benzofuran-1,3,4-oxadiazole hybrids against wood-degrading fungi

A series of novel benzofuran-1,3,4-oxadiazole hybrids were synthesized and evaluated as antifungal agents. The synthetic pathway was started from salicylaldehyde, which afforded 5-(substituted benzylthio)-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives in moderate to good yields. The compounds were investigated for their antifungal potential against white-rot, Trametes versicolor and brown-rot, Poria placenta and Coniophora puteana fungi at different concentrations (500, 1000 ppm). The obtaining results demonstrated that most of the compounds at 500 ppm concentration did not exhibit acceptable antifungal effects but they had better antifungal activity at 1000 ppm concentration. Compounds 5a, 5c, and 5i showed inhibition percentages of 14.6%, 23.0%, and 14.7%, against the growth of P. placenta and C. puteana, respectively. Among the compounds, the 2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-5-((2,6-difluorobenzyl)thio)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (5h) hybrid was the most active one.

The Impact of Paraffin-Thermal Modification of Beech Wood on Its Biological, Physical and Mechanical Properties

The European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) wood was thermally modified in the presence of paraffin at the temperatures of 190 or 210 °C for 1, 2, 3 or 4 h. A significant increase in its resistance to the brown-rot fungus Poria placenta (by 71.4%–98.4%) and the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor (by 50.1%–99.5%) was observed as a result of all modification modes. However, an increase in the resistance of beech wood surfaces to the mold Aspergillus niger was achieved only under more severe modification regimes taking 4 h at 190 or 210 °C. Water resistance of paraffin-thermally modified beech wood improved—soaking reduced by 30.2%–35.8% and volume swelling by 26.8%–62.9% after 336 h of exposure in water. On the contrary, its mechanical properties worsened—impact bending strength decreased by 17.8%–48.3% and Brinell hardness by 2.4%–63.9%.

Identification of MVOCs Produced by Coniophora puteana and Poria placenta Growing on WPC Boards by Using Subtraction Mass Spectra

Volatile fungal metabolites are responsible for various odors and may contribute to a “sick building syndrome” (SBS) with a negative effect on the heath of building. The authors have attempted to fill the research gaps by analyzing microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) originating from representatives of the Basidiomycetes class that grow on wood-polymer composite (WPC) boards. WPCs have been analyzed as a material exposed to biodeterioration. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is affected by the increased use of WPCs inside buildings, and is becoming a highly relevant research issue. The emission profiles of MVOCs at various stages of WPC decay have been demonstrated in detail for Coniophora puteana and Poria placenta, and used to set the European industrial standards for wood-decay fungi. Differences in the production of MVOCs among these species of fungi have been detected using the thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) method. This study identifies the production of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and other compounds during one month of fungal growth. The identified level of metabolites indicates a relation between the level of air pollution and condition of the WPC material, which may become part of IAQ quantification in the future. The study points to the species-specific compounds for representatives of brown and white-rot fungi and the compounds responsible for their odor. In this study, 1-Octen-3-ol was indicated as a marker for their active growth, which is also associated with SBS. The proposed experimental set-up and data analysis are a simple and convenient way to obtain emission profiles of MVOCs from microbes growing on different materials.

Polyamidoamines (PAAs) functionalized with siloxanes as wood preservatives against fungi and insects

A novel treatment based on polyamidoamines (PAAs) for the preservation of wood against fungi and insects with a broad protection functionality, low effective concentration, and low environmental impact has been developed. PAAs were synthesized by nucleophile addition of ethanolamine (EtA) and/or 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to N,N′-methylene-bisacrylamide (MBA). The molar ratios in the tested formulation were: I) MBA:EtA=1:1; II) MBA:APTES=1:1; III) MBA:EtA:APTES=1:0.5:0.5. These formulations, characterized by ESI-MS, NMR, FT-IR, were tested against: (a) the wood decay fungi (Coniophora puteana, Coriolus versicolor, and Poria placenta); (b) the subterranean termite Reticulitermes lucifugus, and the drywood termite Kalotermes flavicollis; (c) the woodborer Stegobium paniceum. Tests in combination with leaching showed that formulation II and III can be utilized as fungal wood preservatives for use classes 2–3 (EN 335:2013). In addition, all PAAs formulations were equally effective in preserving wood against the subterranean termite, and formulation II was most effective against drywood termite. On the other hand, the formulation I showed good efficacy against S. paniceum.

Φυσικοχημικές και μηχανικές ιδιότητες θερμικά τροποποιημένου ξύλου

Στην παρούσα διατριβή πραγματοποιήθηκε θερμική τροποποίηση ξύλου μαύρης πεύκης (Pinus nigra) και λεύκης (Populus sp.) σε θερμοκρασία 180οC και 200οC, για 3, 5 και 7 ώρες, παρουσία αέρα και ελέγχθηκαν βασικής σημασίας φυσικές, χημικές και μηχανικές ιδιότητες. Παρατηρήθηκε ότι όσο η ένταση του χειρισμού αυξάνεται, τόσο το ποσοστό απώλειας μάζας των πλακών πεύκης και λεύκης εξαιτίας του χειρισμού αυξάνεται, η οποία οφείλεται στην απώλεια υγρασίας των δοκιμίων και της υποβάθμισης και απώλειας χημικών συστατικών του ξύλου. Μετά τον χειρισμό, το ποσοστό ανάκτησης του αρχικού βάρους των πλακών πεύκης και λεύκης μειώνεται, εξαιτίας της μειωμένης ανάκτησης υγρασίας, ενώ το ποσοστό ισοδύναμης περιεχόμενης υγρασίας η φαινομενική πυκνότητα των θερμικά τροποποιημένων δοκιμίων και των δύο ειδών μειώνεται. Ο θερμικός χειρισμός βελτιώνει σε μεγάλο βαθμό την υγροσκοπική συμπεριφορά πεύκης και λεύκης (προσρόφηση, εφαπτομενικη-ακτινική-κατά μήκος διόγκωση) και μειώνει περισσότερο τα επίπεδα διόγκωσης σε εφαπτομενική, σε σχέση με την ακτινική διεύθυνση, συμβάλλοντας στον περιορισμό της ανισοτροπίας του ξύλου. Όσο αυξάνει η ένταση του χειρισμού, το ξύλο σκουραίνει και ο δείκτης L* μειώνεται και στις τρεις επιφάνειες των δοκιμίων εφαπτομενικής, ακτινικής και εγκάρσιας τομής. Οι χειρισμοί βελτίωσαν σε ποσοστό 24,47% έως 93,13% τη βιολογική αντοχή των δοκιμίων πεύκης απέναντι σε προσβολή μυκήτων Coniofora puteana, σε σχέση με τον μάρτυρα, ενώ απέναντι στη δράση του μύκητα Poria placenta η απώλεια μειώθηκε κατά 28,75% - 68,46%. Το ποσοστό απώλειας μάζας της λεύκης εξαιτίας της προσβολής του Coriolus versicolor μειώνεται μετά τον χειρισμό κατά 13,25% - 46,08% σε σχέση με τον μάρτυρα, και κατά 31,98% - 64,72% απέναντι στη δράση του μύκητα Poria placenta. Η θερμική τροποποίηση δεν προστάτευσε αποτελεσματικά το ξύλο πεύκης και λεύκης από την ανάπτυξη ευρωτίασης, αλλά συνέβαλε στην επιβράδυνση της ανάπτυξή της. Στα πρώτα στάδια του θερμικού χειρισμού, τα εκχυλίσματα εμφανίζουν μείωση, ενώ όσο η διάρκεια και η θερμοκρασία χειρισμού αυξάνεται, σχηματίζονται νέα εκχυλίσματα. Το ποσοστό λιγνίνης αυξήθηκε στους χειρισμούς θερμοκρασίας 180οC και ακόμη περισσότερο στους χειρισμούς θερμοκρασίας 200οC. Το ποσοστό της ολοκυτταρίνης σε όλους τους χειρισμούς βρέθηκε χαμηλότερο, σε σχέση με το ποσοστό του μάρτυρα, γεγονός που οφείλεται στην έντονη αποσύνθεση ημικυτταρινών. Στην περίπτωση ξύλου λεύκης, το ποσοστό της ολοκυτταρίνης σημείωσε πολύ μικρή μείωση στον πιο ήπιο χειρισμό, ενώ αυξάνοντας διάρκεια και θερμοκρασία, το ποσοστό ολοκυτταρίνης σημειώνει αύξηση. Οι χειρισμοί θερμοκρασίας 180οC προκάλεσαν βελτίωση της αντοχής του πεύκου σε κάμψη, ενώ οι χειρισμοί θερμοκρασίας 200οC εμφάνισαν μείωση της αντοχής κατά 1,52%-16,97%. Η ελαστικότητα των δοκιμίων πεύκης σημείωσε αύξηση εξαιτίας του θερμικού χειρισμού, ανεξαρτήτως διάρκειας ή επιπέδου θερμοκρασίας χειρισμού. Στα δοκίμια λεύκης η αντοχή σε δυνάμεις κάμψης μειώθηκε εξαιτίας του χειρισμού κατά 2,05%-44,65% σε σύγκριση με τον μάρτυρα. Η ελαστικότητα των δοκιμίων λεύκης σημείωσε μείωση σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις θερμικού χειρισμού (5,66%- 24,86%). Στους χειρισμούς θερμοκρασίας 180οC η εφαπτομενική σκληρότητα πεύκης αυξάνεται κατά 6,58% - 15,13%, ενώ σε χειρισμούς θερμοκρασίας 200οC η βελτίωση περιορίζεται καταγράφοντας αύξηση σκληρότητας κατά 4,20% και μείωση σκληρότητας στους επόμενους χειρισμούς (2,79%-13,53%). Η ακτινική σκληρότητα αυξήθηκε κατά 2,45% μόνο στον ηπιότερο χειρισμό, ενώ αυξάνοντας την ένταση μειώθηκε μεταξύ 1,36% και 30%. Η εφαπτομενική σκληρότητα της τροποποιημένης λεύκης σε θερμοκρασία 180οC για 3 και 5 ώρες, μειώθηκε κατά 10,24% και 14,59% και στις 7 ώρες αυξήθηκε κατά 2,35%, ενώ χειρισμοί θερμοκρασίας 200οC την μείωσαν κατά 17,04%-26,05%. Η ακτινική σκληρότητα μειώθηκε κατά 2,81%- 11,06% σε χειρισμούς θερμοκρασίας 180οC (3 και 5 ώρες) και η διάρκεια 7 ωρών την αύξησε κατά 9,28%, ενώ θερμοκρασία 200οC μείωσε τα επίπεδα ακτινικής σκληρότητας των δοκιμίων κατά 2,68% - 18,86%. Οι χειρισμοί θερμοκρασίας 180οC φαίνεται να βελτιώνουν την αντοχή των δοκιμίων πεύκης σε δυνάμεις κρούσης, σε σχέση με τον μάρτυρα, κατά 41,81%, 27,59% και 7,33%, ενώ οι χειρισμοί θερμοκρασίας 200οC την μειώνουν σε σχέση με τον μάρτυρα. Όλοι οι χειρισμοί μείωσαν την αντοχή των δοκιμίων λεύκης σε δυνάμεις κρούσης, καταγράφοντας μείωση 24,27%-62,02%. Όλοι οι χειρισμοί αύξησαν τα επίπεδα αντοχής πεύκης και λεύκης σε δυνάμεις θλίψης σε σχέση με τον μάρτυρα. Μόνο οι ηπιότεροι χειρισμοί μείωσαν ελαφρώς την τραχύτητα επιφάνειας πεύκης και λέυκης, ενώ αυξάνοντας τη διάρκεια και την θερμοκρασία, ο βαθμός τραχύτητας παρουσιάζει έντονη αύξηση σε σχέση με τον μάρτυρα. Μετά από 100 ημέρες έκθεσης των πλακών πεύκης και λεύκης σε εξωτερικές συνθήκες, παρατηρήθηκε παρόμοιος βαθμός αποχρωματισμού των πλακών μάρτυρα σε σχέση με αυτόν των θερμικά τροποποιημένων πλακών, που αποδεικνύεται και από την πορεία των δεικτών L*, a* και b* των επιφανειών λεύκης και πεύκης, γεγονός που πιθανόν οφείλεται στην έκπλυση των υδατοδιαλυτών εκχυλισμάτων, το ξύλο απέκτησε πιο άγρια όψη, εμφανίστηκαν νέες ρωγμές στο ξύλο και εμφανίστηκαν σημάδια προσβολής μυκήτων πιο έντονα στον μάρτυρα και στους μικρότερης έντασης χειρισμούς. Η τραχύτητα όλων των πλακών βρέθηκε αυξημένη σε σχέση με τις τιμές τραχύτητας προ έκθεσης. Οι μικρής έντασης χειρισμοί έδρασαν προστατευτικά στο ξύλο μειώνοντας την τραχύτητα σε σύγκριση με τον μάρτυρα, ενώ οι μεγαλύτερης έντασης χειρισμοί παρουσίασαν επιφάνειες υψηλότερης τραχύτητας. Συμπερασματικά, ο θερμικός χειρισμός βελτιώνει πολλές κρίσιμες για την αξιοποίηση αυτών των ειδών ιδιότητες, αμβλύνει σε μεγάλο βαθμό κάποια από τα σημαντικότερα μειονεκτήματά τους και τα εισάγει σε ένα εκτενές εύρος εφαρμογών μελλοντικής χρήσης τους.

<em>Ceriporiopsis gilvescens</em> (Bres.) Domański producing white rot in wood of deciduous trees is the type species of the genus <em>Ceriporiopsis</em> Domański. In order to complete its generic description, the culture of the fungus was examined and its species code established. Interfertility studies, with single spore cultures isolated from sporophores derived from three sources in Poland have shown that the fungus is heterothallic and has the tetrapolar type of interfertility. It gives also positive reaction in the test for extracellular oxidase In this connection (1) these characters have been introduced in the description of !the genus <em>Ceriporiopsis</em>, and (2) the species <em>Poria placenta</em> (Fr.) Cke sensu J. Erikss. is excluded from this genus

Effect of growth rate on the natural durability of Douglas-fir in western Europe

Douglas-fir is a relatively recent species in the central European forest landscape. It is not clear how its natural durability is influenced by silviculture. We therefore investigated how the natural durability of the Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) varies according to tree growth rate; subsequently, the influence of the nature of the wood (juvenile or mature) and radial position was also analyzed. For this purposes, a total of 60 trees grown in Wallonia (Southern Belgium) was felled: these consisted of 6 trees in each of 10 stands where the average tree girth was approximately 150 cm. Since the age of these plantations ranged from 40 to 69 years, the radial tree growth rate ranged between approximately 3 and 7 mm. In all the trees, standardized heartwood test specimens were taken from different radial positions in the butt log. The mass losses caused by the fungi Poria placenta and Coniophora puteana were assessed according to CEN/TS 15083-1 (2005). Poria placenta exhibited a higher decaying efficiency than C. puteana, leading to classify Douglas-fir wood as slightly durable (class 4). No difference was observed between the durability against P. placenta of juvenile and mature wood. Similarly, growth rate seemed to have no direct impact on durability. Durability was, however, significantly correlated with wood density. The effect of site and tree on the natural durability of the wood was also examined.
