AbstractTwo species of scallop, Austrochlamys natans (“Ostión del Sur”) and Zygochlamys patagonica (“Ostión patagonico”) are presently exploited in the southern part of the Magallanes Province (MP). The lack of clarity in taxonomic identification and ecological aspects is generating both erroneous extraction statistics and an unperceived harvesting pressure on A. natans and Z. patagonica. We aim to discriminate these Magallanes scallops accurately, improve our understanding of their complex natural history and discuss possible implications for their management and conservation status, given the current fisheries statistics. To achieve these goals, we present a complete review of the historical identification of the Magallanes scallop and a multi-locus molecular phylogeny which allowed us to recover the phylogenetic position of A. natans. We sampled 54 individuals from five localities across the southern Pacific coast of the MP. We calculated the depth of the byssal notch (BND) and shell height (VH) ratio from morphological characters and conducted phylogenetic reconstructions with mitochondrial (12S and 16S) and nuclear markers (28S) using Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses. Both morphology and molecular phylogeny identified two distinct entities, Z. patagonica and a distinct, highly divergent lineage that corresponds to A. natans. Our study provides integrative evidence to alert the current fishery management and the need for further conservation studies.

Management of wild fisheries resources requires accurate knowledge on which species are being routinely exploited, but it can be hard to identify fishes to species level, especially in speciose fish groups where colour patterns vary with age. Snappers of the genus Lutjanus represent one such group, where fishes can be hard to identify and as a result fisheries statistics fail to capture species-level taxonomic information. This study employs DNA barcoding approaches to identify adult and juvenile Lutjanus species harvested in Malaysian wild-capture fishery. We uncovered two divergent groups of bigeye snapper ('Lutjanus lutjanus') distributed on either side of the Malay Peninsula, displaying a biogeographical pattern similar to distributions observed for many co-occurring reef distributed fish groups. One of these bigeye snapper groups almost certainly represents an unrecognized species in need of taxonomic description. The study demonstrates the utility of DNA barcoding in identifying overlooked diversity and for assessing species catch composition in a complicated but economically important taxonomic group.

This study aims to estimate the potential of fish resources which include catch per unit effort (CPUE), Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY), optimum efforts, exploitation rates and total allowable catch (TAC) of Rabbitfish in Makassar waters. This study uses time-series data, namely annual data from the fisheries statistics report at the Office of Marine and Fisheries Service, South Sulawesi Province from 2007 until. 2016. The method used to predict fish resource potential in the study is the Surplus Production method referring to the Schaefer model. The results of the study showed that the average production and standard efforts in the 10-year period were 78.8 tons per year and 1304 standard units per year respectively. The estimation results obtained by MSY and the optimum efforts of rabbitfish per year were 104 tons and 1142 standard units, respectively and total allowable catches (TAC) are 82.979 tons per year. The level of utilization of rabbitfish resources in Makassar waters in the last three years has been overexploitation.

Knowledge on the precise identification of fish resources is critical for sustainable fisheries management. This study employs the DNA barcoding approach to generate a molecular taxonomic catalogue of commercially important reef fishes in the waters of Weh Island (Aceh Province), the most northerly inhabited island in the biodiverse Indonesian Archipelago. The waters not only support artisanal fisheries but also a feeder for the industry in the greater island of Aceh. In total, 230 specimens from 72 species belonging to 32 genera and 17 families were DNA barcoded, representing a major segment of the captured reef fish taxa and a quarter of fish species diversity that had previously been recorded. The sequence read lengths were 639 bp revealing 359 conserved sites, 280 variable sites, 269 parsimony informative and 11 singletons. Our molecular findings paralleled the morphological identification with no evidence of cryptic species or new species discovery. This study is a significant contribution to the fisheries statistics of this area, which would facilitate assessment of species catch composition and hence for strategizing management plans. It is an important input to the DNA barcode library of Indonesian marine fishes and to the global DNA barcode entries in general.

The Fisheries Research Center is an institution under the Research and Human ResourcesAgency of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries which has the duties and functions ofconducting research in the Fisheries Sector. To support the research activities, the fisheries researchcenter has a library as a medium to provide literacy and reference materials as well as a place toaccommodate and distribute research results in the form of Scientific Writing that is poured intojournals and proceedings. As a collection of literacy and reference material that is often needed byresearchers is a collection of statistics. The collection of statistics in the library of the fisheriesresearch center are, among others, Aquaculture Statistics, Capture Fisheries Statistics, Statisticson Export and Import of Fishery Products. There are several obstacles in the addition of statisticalcollections, including incomplete collections from year to year, because of the lack of copies andmany applicants, there is often a lack of collection materials

Acoustic method can be used to objectively solve various scientific purposes and management, especially in fisheries field. Banda Sea is a part of fisheries management area (FMA) 714 which is dominated by small pelagic fish according to 2010 Fisheries Statistics. The dominant pelagic fish in Banda is scad (Decapterus spp.) which belongs to small pelagic fish and is commonly caught in Banda Sea. The objective of this research is to estimate small pelagic fish density through spatial and temporal distribution as informaion on fisheries resources in Banda Sea, especially the location and depthwhere scad is abundant and foundin the highest density. Acoustic survey was conducted on 3-18 February 2016. Spatially, density measurement showed that the small pelagic fish distribution in Banda Sea spreadedalong the track of data acquisition and had the highest density in theswimming depth of 5-20 m. Moreoverhigh density of scad was tended to be found near the slopes of the sea close to the mainland. Temporally, small pelagic fish tended to travel in groups at the day and disperse at night. Density of small pelagic fish distribution according to daily distribution is commonly found at night (06.00 p.m.-05.00 a.m. GMT+8) and dawn (05.00 a.m.-06.00 a.m. GMT+8).

Keywords: Banda Sea, fishdensity, small pelagic fish, spatial, temporal

ABSTRAK

Metode akustik dapat digunakan untuk mengatasi berbagai tujuan ilmiah dan manajemen secara objektif terutama dibidang perikanan, dan berhasil memberikan manfaat.
