Abstract The Lochkovian (Lower Devonian) conodont biostratigraphy in China is poorly known, and conodont-based subdivision schemes for the Lochkovian in peri-Gondwana (the Spanish Central Pyrenees, the Prague Synform, Sardinia, and the Carnic Alps) have not been tested in China. Therefore, we studied conodonts from the lower part (Bed 9 to Bed 13) of the Shanjiang Formation at the Alengchu section of Lijiang, western Yunnan to test the application of established subdivision schemes. The conodont fauna is assignable to 12 taxa belonging to eight genera (Ancyrodelloides, Flajsella, Lanea, Wurmiella, Zieglerodina, Caudicriodus, Pelekysgnathus, and Pseudooneotodus), and enables recognition of two chronostratigraphical intervals from the lower part of the Shanjiang Formation. The interval ranging from the uppermost part of Bed 9 to the upper part of Bed 10 belongs to the lower Lochkovian; whereas an interval covering the uppermost part of Bed 11 to the upper part of Bed 13 is correlated with the upper half of the middle Lochkovian. The Silurian-Devonian boundary is probably located within Bed 9, in the basal part of the Shanjiang Formation. However, the scarcity of specimens precludes definitive identification of bases of the lower, middle, and upper Lochkovian as well as other conodont zones recognized in peri-Gondwana.

The detailed study of the Guryanovka Formation key sections at the northeast of Gorny Altai (Biya and Bura sections) for the first time revealed the representative collection of conodonts. The conodont fauna is composed of 12 species belong to 9 genera: Belodina compressa (Branson and Mehl, 1933), Phragmodus undatus Branson and Mehl, 1933, Panderodus gracilis (Branson and Mehl, 1933), Panderodus acostatus (Branson, Branson, 1947), Tasmanognatus careyi Burret, 1979, Aphelognathus sp., Panderodus sp., Drepanoistodus sp., Drepantodus sp., Colaptoconus sp., Paltodus sp., Scandodus sp. For the first time, the precise position of the P. undatus conodont Zone was defined in Gorny Altai (continuous Biya Section, base of unit 3).

The Olistostrome member of the Sana-Una Paleozoic complex of the Ljubija ore mine in Bosnia and Herzegovina contains limestone fragments of pebble to block size that have been examined paleontologically. The recovered conodont fauna of the first sample is characterized by the species Declinognathodus lateralis, Idiognathoides sulcatus sulcatus and Idiognathodus sp. confirming its mid-Bashkirian age. This report is the first on the occurrence of these taxa in the area. The second sample with chaetetid demosponges yields an abundant diversified microbiota consisting of cyanobacteria, algae and foraminifera. Chlorophyts are marked by the common siphonoclad occurrence of Donezella lutugini and D. lunaensis, whereas rhodophyts include rare representatives of Stacheia, Stacheoides, Pseudoungdarella and Masloviporidium. The presence of Asphaltinella horowitzi and Aphralysia carbonaria of unclear taxonomic position is also documented. Pseudostaffellids, eostaffellids and other foraminifera, mostly endothyrids are present. The examined associations of fossils point to the Bashkirian age of the primary rock that originated in a very shallow habitat most probably linked to a high-energy reef environment.

Abstract Upper Ordovician strata exposed from the Baiyanhuashan section is the most representative Late Ordovician unit in the northwestern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). In total, 1,215 conodont specimens were obtained from 24 samples through the Wulanhudong and Baiyanhuashan formations at the Baiyanhuashan section. Thirty-six species belonging to 17 genera, including Tasmanognathus coronatus new species, are present. Based on this material, three conodont biozones—the Belodina confluens Biozone, the Yaoxianognathus neimengguensis Biozone, and the Yaoxianognathus yaoxianensis Biozone—have been documented, suggesting that the Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna has a stratigraphic range spanning the early to middle Katian. The Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna includes species both endemic to North China and widespread in tropical zones, allowing a reassessment of the previous correlations of the Katian conodont zonal successions proposed for North China with those established for shallow-water carbonate platforms at low latitudes. The Ordovician System is extensively represented in the Precordillera of San Juan Province, Argentina. At the Cerro La Chilca in the Jáchal area, the limestone of the San Juan Formation is paraconformably overlain by interbedded limestone and shale of the Gualcamayo Formation. The present contribution reports new data on the conodont fauna and biostratigraphy of these darriwilian units, revising local and regional chronostratigraphic relationships. New information on the composition of conodont and graptolite associations through the stratigraphic sequence is presented. The presence of Paroistodus horridus horridus, Yangtzeplacognathus crassus, and Histiodella sinuosa constrain the uppermost strata of the San Juan Formation to the lower part of the Y. crassus Zone, according to the Baltoscandian scheme, and to the H. sinuosa Subzone of the Periodon macrodentatus Zone of the North American scheme. In the overlying Gualcamayo Formation the co-occurrence of Y. crassus with Histiodella holodentata enable the recognition of the Y. crassus Zone and the H. holodentata Subzone of the P. macrodentatus Zone. The identification of these zones allows for precise global and regional correlation. A graptolite assemblage that belongs to the epipelagic and deep-water biotopes with some components restricted to low paleolatitudes is recognized. This diverse assemblage is characteristic of the pelagic biofacies. The important diversity of graptolites in this section suggests a favorable environment for their development. Local changes in the taxonomic composition are recognized through the Gualcamayo Formation. When comparing this fauna with that of different study localities from the Central Precordillera (Cerro Potrerillo, Oculta Creek, Cerro Viejo de Huaco and Las Aguaditas Creek) slight differences in the generic composition are observed. Taxonomic differences support the preference of certain associations for particular environments; though, graptolites are more diverse in black shales facies, which represent deeper environments (the Los Azules Formation), in relation to the calcareous-shale facies of the Gualcamayo Formation from Cerro La Chilca and correlative unit at Las Aguaditas Creek.

Recent biostratigraphic studies on the western argentine Puna recorded the Middle Ordovician conodont Baltoniodus cf. B. navis (Lindström) for first time, related to key graptolite taxa of the Central Andean Basin. The analyzed material comes from the lower and middle thirds of the turbidite succession exposed at the Huaytiquina section, Salta Province, which was previously assigned to the “Coquena” Formation. The conodont fauna was recovered from the calcareous sandstone beds intercalated in the middle portion of this unit, and it is composed by species of the genera Baltoniodus, Gothodus, Trapezognathus, Drepanoistodus, Drepanodus, and Protopanderodus, among others. The conodont association indicates a middle Dapingian (Dp2) age, linking the conodonts of the Argentine Puna with those from Baltoscandinavia and South China. The conodont productive levels also contain graptolites assignable to Tetragraptus bigsbyi (Hall) and Isograptus sp. They are located overlying strata bearing Azygograptus lapworthi Nicholson and underlying deposits with Xiphograptus lofuensis (Lee). The graptolite associations are indicating a Dapingian age (Dp1-Dp2) for the lower and middle portions of the “Coquena” Formation. The current findings from the western Puna, as well as the record of Azygograptus lapworthi related to the early Dapingian (Dp1) index conodont Baltoniodus triangularis in the Argentine Cordillera Oriental, are suggesting that a high-resolution correlation between both geomorphological regions is possible. This also documents that the Cordillera Oriental as well as the Puna were connected parts of the Central Andean Basin, during the interval from the Lower Ordovician (Floian) to the Middle Ordovician (Dapingian), instead of corresponding to the source and infill sectors of the basin, respectively. Furthermore, the regional and global correlations are discussed, and the potential of the Ordovician successions of the Argentine Puna for future advances on conodont-graptolite high-resolution biostratigraphy is highlighted.
