Can an average THI from 70 to 72 in the Summer Affect Behaviour, Physiology, Performance, and Carcass Weight in Feedlot Steers?

Environmental conditions during hot weather can decrease feed intake and cattle growth. This study conducted over three consecutive years (Trial 1, 2, and 3), in the same feedlot facility, evaluated access to shade as a strategy to mitigate heat stress of cattle finished during summer in Uruguay. Each year, 32 Bos taurus and/or Bos traurus crossbred steers (initially weighing 461 ± 28 kg) were blocked and assigned to one of eight pens (4 animals/pen), where one of two treatments were applied –no shade or shade access. Twenty-four pens were considered in a randomized complete block design. For Trial 1, 2, and 3, respectively, the average THI was 71, 72, and 70. Steers with access to shade had greater daily dry matter intake (P = 0.003), average daily gain (P = 0.004), final live weight (P = 0.04), feed:gain ratio (P = 0.05), and slaughter weight (P = 0.02) than no shaded steers. Ruminal pH was higher (P < 0.0001) in shaded than in no shaded animals. The average respiration rate and panting score was lower (P < 0.0001) for shaded than for no shaded steers, except in the early morning. Access to shade increased the time spent of animals feeding (P = 0.008) and ruminating (P = 0.001), decreasing inactive time (P < 0.0001). We concluded that shade could improve performance and welfare of feedlot cattle during summertime even in regions with an average THI from 70 to 72.

Shade Modifies Behavioral and Physiological Responses of Low to Medium Production Dairy Cows at Pasture in an Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest System

Under conditions of high temperature, humidity, and incidence of solar radiation, dairy cows use behavioral changes as a strategy to decrease the metabolic heat production at pasture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavioral and physiological responses of Gyr and Girolando (5/8 Holstein 3/8 Gyr, and ½ Holstein ½ Gyr) dairy cows submitted to environments with and without shade. The experiment was conducted at Embrapa Cerrados (Technology Center for Dairy Zebu breeds—CTZL), Brasilia, Distrito Federal—Brazil, with 48 Gyr and Girolando cows total in the lactation group, with low to medium milk production, in full sun or shade with Eucalyptus urograndis (267 plants/ha−1). The physiological and behavioral characteristics evaluated were panting score, superficial temperature, and time spent grazing, ruminating, and lying down. Other traits included skin and coat thickness, hair diameter, density and length, and predominant coat color. In addition, body measurements, such as body length, the height of withers, chest circumference, and shin circumference, were measured. Shaded cows had 34% longer rumination times than cows in full sun (p = 0.01). With a temperature-humidity index ranging from 79 to 83, the rumination time was 1.7 times higher in cows under shade (p = 0.01) during a 24-h period of observation. There were no significant differences in the grazing time between the environments, but lying time was 23% longer in cows under the sun (p = 0.01). The panting score was not influenced by the environment (p = 0.17). Girolando cows had a 35% higher panting score than Gyr cows (p = 0.01) regardless of the environment. The panting score increased two and a half times during the afternoon compared with the morning (p = 0.01). The surface and rectal core temperatures had significant differences between treatments and time of the day. Body measurements were not different between cows in both environments, but there was a difference between breeds. The use of trees in pastures with a silvopastoral system for dairy zebu cows is indicated to improve grazing behavior, as well as time spent ruminating and lying down.

Farming systems in sheep rearing: Impact on growth and reproductive performance, nutrient digestibility, disease incidence and heat stress indices

The experiment was conducted with an intent to know the effect of different farming systems on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility coefficients, reproductive traits, disease incidence, heat stress indices, and cost economics of Nellore sheep. The study includes two parallel trials to prevent the influence of age on heat stress indices (panting score and erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF)). One hundred and twenty lambs (60 ram-lambs and 60 ewe-lambs) were allotted in a randomized block design under extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive systems for trial I, whereas trial II include eighteen rams assigned to the three respective farming systems in a completely randomised design. Both, season (summer) and grazing practice increased the panting score and EOF. The heat stress indices were positively correlated (P<0.01) with dry-bulb temperature and temperature-humidity index (THI) and inversely correlated (P<0.01) to relative humidity. Allotting the sheep to intensive system increased (P<0.001) weight gain and average daily gain with higher effect in males compared to females. The parameters of asymptotic weight (A), integration constant (B), and maturation rate were higher for intensive males. The male Nellore lambs had higher asymptotic weight and lower maturity rate than females, irrespective of the rearing system. Intensive sheep revealed a higher dry matter intake, digestibility coefficients, feed conversion ratio. The instantaneous bite mass (IBM) was higher for Commelina benghalensis, while instantaneous bite frequency (IBF), instantaneous intake rate (IIR) were higher for Cyanodon dactylon and amaranthus viridis, respectively. The proportion of intakes were highest for Stylo hemata followed by Cynodon dactylon and Tridax procumbens species. No differences were observed for the weight at puberty, oestrus cycle length, oestrus duration, conception percent, gestation period, and lambing percent in three rearing systems; however, the age at puberty was lower (P<0.001) and the birth weight was higher (P<0.001) for sheep reared under intensive farming system. Highest disease incidence was observed in rainy and winter seasons, particularly in sheep reared under extensive system. The capital expenditure was same for the three rearing systems, while the recurring expenditure was higher for Intensive farming system. The gross income and net income were higher for intensive system on account of higher weight gains. However, the higher returns per rupee of expenditure project the extensive farming as an ideal rearing system for small farmers and entrepreneurs with a low initial capital.

Non-Invasive Physiological Indicators of Heat Stress in Cattle

Cattle are susceptible to heat stress, especially those kept on high levels of nutrition for the purpose of maximising growth rates, which leads to a significant heat increment in their bodies. Consequences include compromised health and productivity and mortalities during extreme events, as well as serious economic loss. Some measures of heat stress, such as plasma cortisol and temperature in the rectum, vagina, or rumen, are invasive and therefore unlikely to be used on farms. These may cause additional stress to the animal due to handling, and that stress in itself can confound the measure. Consequently, it is desirable to find non-invasive alternatives. Panting score (PS), cortisol metabolites in faeces, milk, or hair, and the infrared temperature of external body surfaces are all potentially useful. Respiratory indicators are difficult and time consuming to record accurately, and cortisol metabolites are expensive and technically difficult to analyse. Infrared temperature appears to offer the best solution but requires further research to determine the thresholds that define when corrective actions are required to ensure optimal health and productivity. Research in this area has the potential to ultimately improve the welfare and profitability of cattle farming.

Influence of shade on panting score and behavioural responses of Bos taurus and Bos indicus feedlot cattle to heat load

Context Feedlot cattle can be negatively impacted by hot conditions, such that they have reduced performance and wellbeing. This study was conducted at the research feedlot located at The University of Queensland during a southern hemisphere summer (October to April). Aims The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of shade on the behaviour and panting score of Bos taurus and Bos indicus feedlot cattle during summer. Methods Thirty-six steers (12 Angus, 12 Charolais and 12 Brahman) with an initial non-fasted liveweight of 318.5 ± 6.7 kg were used in a 154-day feedlot study consisting of two treatments: unshaded and shaded (3 m2/animal). Observational data were obtained for each steer at 2 h intervals between 0600 and 1800 hours daily from Day 1 to Day 154. Additional night time observational data were collected at 2-h intervals between 2000 and 0400 hours on 12 occasions. Data collected included activity (feeding, drinking, or ruminating), posture (standing or lying) and panting score. Panting scores were used to calculate a mean panting score for each breed × treatment group. Observational data were converted to a count for each breed × treatment group for each observation time point and were analysed using a binomial generalised linear model. Key results Maximum shade utilisation was the greatest at 1200 hours for Angus (85.5%), Charolais (32.7%) and Brahman (33.3%) steers. All breed × treatment groups exhibited a notable increase in mean panting score as heat load increased. Average increase in mean panting score was 0.36, where shaded Brahman exhibited the smallest increase (0.13) and unshaded Angus had the greatest increase (0.71). When heat load conditions were very hot (heat load index (HLI) ≥ 86) the mean panting score of all breed × treatment groups differed (P &lt; 0.05). Conclusions Overall these results emphasise the importance of providing shade to feedlot cattle, irrespective of genotype. Implications These results further highlight the importance of providing shade to feedlot cattle. These results challenge the general perception that Bos indicus feedlot cattle do not require access to heat load alleviation strategies.

Developing a heat load index for lactating dairy cows

The temperature humidity index (THI) has been extensively used in the Australian dairy industry as an indicator of heat load conditions. However, there are limitations to the THI, where it does not account for solar radiation or wind speed. In addition, the THI has not been formulated in conjunction with physiological data. Thus, it is not apparent whether the THI provides the best prediction for impact of heat load on lactating dairy cattle. The aim of the present study was to develop a dairy heat load index (DHLI), based on the physiological responses of lactating dairy cows to environmental conditions. The study was undertaken at The University of Queensland, Gatton Campus, Australia, over three summers and two winters. Observations were conducted four times daily at 0800 hours, 1200 hours, 1400 hours and 1700 hours. Weather data were obtained every 10 min from an onsite, automated weather station. Panting score data were used to calculate a mean panting score of the herd. Developing the DHLI encompassed three different modelling techniques, including (1) linear regression, (2) broken stick regression and (3) non-linear logistic regression. Comparisons between the models indicated there was an increase in accuracy when using non-linear logistic regression (R2 = 0.542). The DHLI model developed was based on mean panting score, black globe temperature (°C) and relative humidity. By utilising the black globe temperature, the DHLI is able to incorporate the combined effects of ambient temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind speed in a single unit measure. By combining climatic conditions and a physiological response, i.e. panting score, the DHLI model may become a more accurate prediction of heat load for lactating dairy cows. The DHLI produces a unit value between 0 and 100. When DHLI is 0, there would be no panting and, when DHLI is 100, all cows within the herd would be panting.
