Predictive Trajectory-Based Mobile Data Gathering Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks

Tradition wireless sensor networks (WSNs) transmit data by single or multiple hops. However, some sensor nodes (SNs) close to a static base station forward data more frequently than others, which results in the problem of energy holes and makes networks fragile. One promising solution is to use a mobile node as a mobile sink (MS), which is especially useful in energy-constrained networks. In these applications, the tour planning of MS is a key to guarantee the network performance. In this paper, a novel strategy is proposed to reduce the latency of mobile data gathering in a WSN while the routing strategies and tour planning of MS are jointly optimized. First, the issue of network coverage is discussed before the appropriate number of clusters being calculated. A dynamic clustering scheme is then developed where a virtual cluster center is defined as the MS sojourn for data collection. Afterwards, a tour planning of MS based on prediction is proposed subject to minimizing the traveling distance to collect data. The proposed method is simulated in a MATLAB platform to show the overall performance of the developed system. Furthermore, the physical tests on a test rig are also carried out where a small WSN based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is developed in our laboratory. The test results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the method proposed.

An AUV-Aided Cross-Layer Mobile Data Gathering Protocol for Underwater Sensor Networks

Underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) have recently attracted much attention due to their ability to discover and monitor the aquatic environment. However, acoustic communication has posed some significant challenges, such as high propagation delay, low available bandwidth, and high bit error rate. Therefore, proposing a cross-layer protocol is of high importance to the field to integrate different communication functionalities (i.e, an interaction between data link layer and network layer) to interact in a more reliable and flexible manner to overcome the consequences of applying acoustic signals. In this paper, a novel Cross-Layer Mobile Data gathering (CLMD) scheme for Underwater Sensor Networks (UWSNs) is presented to improve the performance by providing the interaction between the MAC and routing layers. In CLMD, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is used to periodically visit a group of clusters which are responsible for data collection from members. The communications are managed by using a distributed cross-layer solution to enhance network performance in terms of packet delivery and energy saving. The cluster heads are replaced with other candidate members at the end of each operational phase to prolong the network lifetime. The effectiveness of CLMD is verified through an extensive simulation study which reveals the performance improvement in the energy-saving, network lifetime, and packet delivery ratio with varying number of nodes. The effects of MAC protocols are also studied by studying the network performance under various MAC protocols in terms of packet delivery ratio, goodput, and energy consumption with varying density of nodes.

Heuristic mobile data gathering for wireless sensor networks via trajectory control

This article focuses on the problem of scheduling the optimal paths of multiple mobile elements (e.g. robots, vehicles, etc.) to minimize the travel distance and balance the energy consumption and the data gathering latency in wireless sensor networks for smart cities. To partition the network for the multiple mobile elements and compute the trajectories of the multiple mobile elements, we utilize the sensor’s communication range and construct a multiple mobile elements scheduling problem. A heuristic mobile data gathering approach is proposed to solve this problem, which includes the following three steps. The sensor nodes are preliminarily partitioned into four levels, and then the clusterheads are further partitioned, and the traveling tour is scheduled for each cluster. After the first two steps, all the sensor nodes are partitioned reasonably for the multiple mobile elements. In the last step, the traveling tour is scheduled for each cluster, and the meeting point of each clusterhead is determined. We compare the proposed heuristic mobile data gathering with the existing approaches. The results indicate that the travel distance and the data gathering latency are reduced significantly, which further validates that the communication range is beneficial to minimize the travel distance.

Adaptive Dual-Mode Routing-Based Mobile Data Gathering Algorithm in Rechargeable Wireless Sensor Networks for Internet of Things

Great improvement recently appeared in terms of efficient service delivery in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for Internet of things (IoT). The IoT is mainly dependent on optimal routing of energy-aware WSNs for gathering data. In addition, as the wireless charging technology develops in leaps and bounds, the performance of rechargeable wireless sensor networks (RWSNs) is greatly ameliorated. Many researches integrated wireless energy transfer into data gathering to prolong network lifetime. However, the mobile collector cannot visit all nodes under the constraints of charging efficiency and gathering delay. Thus, energy consumption differences caused by different upload distances to collectors impose a great challenge in balancing energy. In this paper, we propose an adaptive dual-mode routing-based mobile data gathering algorithm (ADRMDGA) in RWSNs for IoT. The energy replenishment capability is reasonably allocated to low-energy nodes according to our objective function. Furthermore, the innovative adaptive dual-mode routing allows nodes to choose direct or multi-hop upload modes according to their relative upload distances. The empirical study confirms that ADRMDGA has excellent energy equilibrium and effectively extends the network lifetime.

Energy Efficient Intelligent Routing in WSN using Dominant Genetic Algorithm

<p>In the current era of wireless sensor network development, among the various challenging issues, the life enhancement has obtained the prime interest. Reason is clear and straight: the battery operated sensors do have limited period of life hence to keep the network active as much as possible, life of network should be larger. To enhance the life of the network, at different level different approaches has been applied, broadly defining the proper scheduling<br />of sensors and defining the energy efficient communication. In this paper heuristic based energy efficient communication approch has applied. A new development in the Genetic algorithm has presented and called as Dominant Genetic algorithm to determine the optimum energy efficient routing path between sensor nodes and to define the optimal energy efficient trajectory for mobile data gathering node. Dominancy of high fitness solution has included<br />in the Genetic algorithm because of its natural existence. The proposed solution has applied the connection oriented crossover and mutation operator to maintain the feasibility of generated solution. With various simulation experiments it has observed that proposed method not only has delivered the better solution but also very less number of iterations required as<br />compared to conventional form of Genetic algorithm.</p>
