Abstract M. faya, the fire tree, is native to the Atlantic islands of the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries, where it is a component of mid-altitude forests. It was introduced to Hawaii where it has become a serious invasive weed in the Volcanoes National Park, and is resisting all attempts at its eradication.
