The advent of large-scale fluorescence and electronic microscopy techniques along with maturing image analysis is giving life sciences a deluge of geometrical objects in 2D/3D(+t) to deal with. These objects take the form of large scale, localised, precise, single cell, quantitative data such as cells’ positions, shapes, trajectories or lineages, axon traces in whole brains atlases or varied intracellular protein localisations, often in multiple experimental conditions. The data mining of those geometrical objects requires a variety of mathematical and computational tools of diverse accessibility and complexity. Here we present a new Python library for quantitative 3D geometry called GeNePy3D which helps handle and mine information and knowledge from geometric data, providing a unified application programming interface (API) to methods from several domains including computational geometry, scale space methods or spatial statistics. By framing this library as generically as possible, and by linking it to as many state-of-the-art reference algorithms and projects as needed, we help render those often specialist methods accessible to a larger community. We exemplify the usefulness of the  GeNePy3D toolbox by re-analysing a recently published whole-brain zebrafish neuronal atlas, with other applications and examples available online. Along with an open source, documented and exemplified code, we release reusable containers to allow for convenient and wide usability and increased reproducibility.

The paper presents a retrospective analysis of the concept of waste-free stores in Russia. The main feature of a waste-free store is described: the need to use reusable containers for purchases. The advantages and disadvantages of waste-free stores for visitors and operators are presented in the form of a 2x2 strategic table. The impact of the pandemic on their activities is further discussed. It is recommended to change the service model from self-service to over-the-counter trading during the pandemic. Using the example of the “B12 Zero Waste” store, the possibility of creating a waste-free online store is considered. Actions that reduce the cost of creating a web representation and organizing delivery were discussed. It is emphasized that an online store is necessary for any commercial enterprise in the current conditions. It is noted that the integration of the two most relevant trends in retail (e-commerce and greening) can be a real breakthrough. The authors point out that waste-free stores simultaneously reduce the amount of discarded packaging, but significantly increase the cost of detergents and fresh water, so the waste-free concept cannot be called completely eco-friendly. The survey revealed that in Russia, most visitors have a positive attitude to the waste-free model of the store. Depending on the factors that motivate customers to make a purchase, a waste-free store can be divided into two groups: environmentally responsible and economical.

The paper analyzes the changes that have occurred in retail trade under the influence of eco-friendly trends in Russia. The paper defines the terms ecologization and ecologization of retail. There are three main directions of retail development: commodity ecologization, greening business processes and ecologization of the consumer environment. The paper presents an analysis of innovations in each of the areas of greening. The main elements of commodity greening are the introduction of eco-packaging into the product range and the introduction of eco-packages. For industrial greening, it is recommended to organize work with suppliers taking into account the need for the turnover of reusable containers and pay special attention to the management of goods with an expiring shelf life. The organization of the collection of secondary raw materials on the territory of stores is considered as the greening of the consumer environment. The paper emphasizes the importance of using eco-friendly innovations in the marketing and advertising strategies of stores. For the analysis, the practice of large Russian retailers, such as “X5 Retail Group”, “Magnit”, “Lenta”, “VkusVill” was used.

 The bottom of the pyramid (BOP) proposition espouses the use of ‘single-serve’ or ‘sachet’ packaging in order to enhance affordability, encourage consumption and offer an assortment of good-quality products to BOP consumers. This study assesses the influence of packaging (in relation to size and price of different quantities) on South African BOP consumers’ purchase decisions. The study analyses whether or not these consumers have a tendency to purchase smaller quantities of products as opposed to making bulk purchases. This study further investigates the impact that packaging criteria (storage, convenience of purchase, prices of different package sizes and reusability of packaging) have on consumers’ decision-making. The aim is to uncover South African BOP consumers’ perceptions of packaging as a decision-making influencer in order to formulate appropriate strategies that businesses can adopt in order to lucratively serve this market. Using area sampling, a sample of 600 BOP consumers living in relative poverty within the rural areas of South Africa was drawn. Data was collected using a self-developed questionnaire whose psychometric properties were statistically analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study’s results reveal that although South African BOP consumers view small quantities of products as convenient and easy to store, the majority have an inclination to purchase large quantities instead of smaller package sizes. South African BOP consumers are also enticed to purchase products that are packaged in reusable containers, thereby, enabling the containers to be re-used after the consumption of the contents. Practical recommendations are articulated for business organizations.
