The output of an association rule miner is often huge in practice. This is why several concise lossless representations have been proposed, such as the “essential” or “representative” rules. A previously known algorithm for mining representative rules relies on an incorrect mathematical claim, and can be seen to miss part of its intended output; in previous work, two of the authors of the present paper have offered a complete but, often, somewhat slower alternative. Here, we extend this alternative to the case of closure-based redundancy. The empirical validation shows that, in this way, we can improve on the original time efficiency, without sacrificing completeness.

Collaborative filtering uses data mining and analysis to develop a system that helps users make appropriate decisions in real-life applications by removing redundant information and providing valuable to information users. Data mining aims to extract from data the implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful information such as association rules that reveals relationships between frequently co-occurring patterns in antecedent and consequent parts of association rules. This chapter presents an algorithm called CF-Miner for collaborative filtering with association rule miner. The CF-Miner algorithm first constructs bitwise data structures to capture important contents in the data. It then finds frequent patterns from the bitwise structures. Based on the mined frequent patterns, the algorithm forms association rules. Finally, the algorithm ranks the mined association rules to recommend appropriate merchandise products, goods or services to users. Evaluation results show the effectiveness of CF-Miner in using association rule mining in collaborative filtering.

In this chapter, we model association rule mining as a Fuzzy multi-objective global optimization problem by considering several measures of strength such as support, confidence, coverage, comprehensibility, leverage, interestingness, lift and conviction by utilizing various fuzzy aggregator operators. In this, pdel, each measure has its own level of significance. Three fuzzy multi-objective association rule mining techniques viz., Fuzzy Multi-objective Binary Particle Swarm Optimization based association rule miner (FMO-BPSO), a hybridized Fuzzy Multi-objective Binary Firefly Optimization and Threshold Accepting based association rule miner (FMO-BFFOTA), hybridized Fuzzy Multi-objective Binary Particle Swarm Optimization and Threshold Accepting based association rule miner (FMO-BPSOTA) have been proposed. These three algorithms have been tested on various datasets such as book, food, bank, grocery, click stream and bakery datasets along with three fuzzy aggregate operators. From these experiments, we can conclude that Fuzzy-And outperforms all the other operators.
