O “Ensaio Para As Cônicas” de Blaise Pascal

Apresentamos aqui uma tradução do Essai pour les coniques, publicado em francês por Blaise Pascal em 1640. A tradução é acompanhada de notas explicativas aos termos, assim como de breves formulações modernas dos resultados matemáticos. A introdução contextualiza o Essai pour les coniques em seu período histórico, relacionando-o aos trabalhos de Pascal e de Girard Desargues sobre as cônicas a partir de uma abordagem “perspectiva”, ou, como seria mais tarde denominada, geometria projetiva. Abordamos brevemente o conteúdo matemático do tratado, em particular no que diz respeito ao dito Teorema de Pascal ou Teorema do Hexágono e à unificação de casos geométricos envolvendo o infinito e o finito.

The Generation of Art as the Generation of Philosophy

This chapter studies how early modern thinkers understood the connection between the generation of art and the generation of philosophical understanding. It argues that in this period, the generation of mental representations was understood through practices of artistic production, and that the notion of generation itself was central to philosophy. The first section explores descriptions of cognition that compare thinking to the creation of artistic works. It discusses the accounts of a broad range of artists and scholars, including Dürer and Willibald Pirckheimer (1470–1530), Bosse and Girard Desargues (1591–1661), Descartes, and others to show how constant the association between artistic generation and mental generation was in this period. The second section examines the celebrated frontispiece to the Leviathan that Bosse created in collaboration with Hobbes. It argues that previous accounts of the frontispiece have failed to capture the full complexity of this etching. It offers a new account of this famous image — one that emphasizes the process of the state's generation.

LEIBNIZ E O PARADIGMA DA PERSPECTIVA

No século XVII, vemos a emergência de uma nova abordagem geométrica às seções cônicas. Desenvolvida inicialmente por Girard Desargues e por Blaise Pascal, tal geometria é herdeira do método de representação pela perspectiva linear a aponta na direção da geometria projetiva do século XIX. Estudos recentes de J. Echeverría e de V. Debuiche iniciaram a discussão da recepção de tais trabalhos por Leibniz, assim como a relação deles com os trabalhos do próprio Leibniz em perspectiva (em grande parte ainda inéditos) e com a Geometria situs. Este artigo percorre algumas questões associadas a estes domínios, assim como a importância do paradigma da perspectiva para a filosofia de Leibniz.
