Student Preferences Impact Outcome of Flipped Classroom in Dental Education: Students Favoring Flipped Classroom Benefited More

Many reports in dental education showed that student learning improved with the flipped classroom method. However, there are few reports that describe how different subsets of students may benefit from the flipped classroom. In this study, we investigated how students’ preference for the flipped classroom impacted their learning outcome. We used a flipped classroom module on the physiology of the autonomic nervous system taught to year one Doctor of Dental Surgery students to test the hypothesis that students who favored the flipped classroom performed better on assessment quizzes. The module was composed of pre-class activity, out-of-class assignment, in-class discussion, and two in-class quizzes. Quiz 1 was given after students self-studied the foundational content online through the pre-class activity, and Quiz 2 was at the end of the module. Students filled out a survey to report learning experiences and preferences. Fewer students scored below 75% on Quiz 2 than on Quiz 1. Students’ self-evaluated understanding of content significantly improved after finishing the assignment and discussion compared to finishing the pre-class activity alone. Moreover, students who preferred to learn through the flipped classroom scored higher in Quiz 2. Students with higher overall grades in the course preferred the flipped classroom more than low performers. Our results indicated that students favoring the flipped classroom method spent more time on the assignment, understood the content better, and performed better on assessments than students who prefer traditional lectures.

Naming Silence and Inadequate Obstetric Care as Obstetric Violence is a Necessary Step for Change

This response article addresses the questions raised in “How Gentle Must Violence Against Women be in Order to not be Violent? Rethinking the Word ‘Violence; in Obstetric Settings” and concludes that naming violence is critical for describing people’s experiences of such violence and for addressing the structures and contexts that create and fuel such violence, not for judgment but for accountability and change. Impact, outcome, and, at times, processes—rather than intention—should underpin applications of the term violence; naming violence does not disempower women, but rather naming structural, systemic, and institutional violence demands acknowledgment, accountability, and responsibility for its effects on both patients and clinicians; and, finally, while the unintended consequences of using such a term may present challenges, they do not outweigh the importance of naming structural violence in health-related systems to identify practices and processes that discriminate, disempower, harm, and oppress.

Impact? Outcome? Output? Ein Beitrag zur Entwirrung der Wirkungskonfusion Die Frage nach der Wirkung von Projekten ist allgegenwärtig, Wirkungsevaluationen boomen. Meist beschränken sich die Evaluationen jedoch auf vergleichsweise einfach quantifizierbare Leistungen wie die Anzahl von Besuchenden, Nutzerkennzahlen eines Angebots oder die «Markenbekanntheit» von Kampagnenslogans. Eigentliche Wirkungsevaluationen im Sinne der Erhebung erreichter Veränderungen sind ausserhalb von Forschungsprojekten selten. Grund dafür sind hauptsächlich Konfusionen rund um die Terminologien und Bedenken gegenüber dem Nutzen der Wirkungsevaluationen. Im Dialog mit Vertreterinnen und Vertretern von Förderinstitutionen und Akteuren der Projektpraxis haben wir ausgehend vom etablierten Input-Output-Outcome-Impact-Wirkungsmodell einen pragmatischen Ansatz entwickelt, der die Wirkungskonfusion entwirrt und Wirkungsevaluationen konstruktiv gestalten lässt. Der Ansatz ist seit 2017 in 10 Workshops der Stiftung Mercator Schweiz mit insgesamt 64 Projektbeteiligten und in diversen weiteren Coachings, Workshops und Weiterbildungen getestet und evaluiert worden. Kerngedanke des Ansatzes ist, dass bei der Verwendung von Wirkungsmodellen ein «Turnaround» von der Wirkungsevaluation hin zur Wirkungsorientierung vollzogen werden muss. Um dies leisten zu können, wurden die Begriffe dahingehend geschärft, dass Outcomes konsequent die direkten Wirkungen eines Projekts bezeichnen, während Impacts die indirekten, ausserhalb des Einflussbereichs eines Projekts stehenden Wirkungen umfassen. Wirkungsevaluationen können in der Folge pragmatisch, aussagekräftig und formativ durchgeführt werden. Denn für den Nachweis der direkten Wirkung eines Projekts kann primär auf den Grad der Erreichung der Outcome-Zielsetzungen fokussiert werden. Aufgrund unserer Erfahrungen sind wir überzeugt, dass die entwickelte Interpretation des Wirkungsmodells eine wirkungsorientierte Haltung fördert und dadurch einen Mehrwert sowohl für Projektleitende wie auch für die Förderinstitutionen darstellt.
