Eve attempts to eavesdrop on Henry, who discovers that her eavesdropping strategy is susceptible to hindrances imposed by the QM uncertainty principle. Eve can detect Henry’s whereabouts to any precision she chooses. However, a precise position measurement induces a large spread of Henry’s velocities and renders his position extremely uncertain, defeating Eve’s attempt to further track him. Such restriction on the maximal accuracy of measuring “complementary” observables was viewed by Bohr as a fundamental limitation on human perception of the world. A deeper explanation of complementarity may assume that the observer’s cognition and the observed object are inseparable, in the spirit of Spinoza, who considered nature as one substance with both mental and physical modalities. By studying these modalities, human knowledge may some day be freed from complementarity constraints. The appendix to this chapter introduces operators and their commutation relation and clarifies the position–momentum uncertainty relation.

Osteoporosis is a vital healthcare issue among elderly people. During the aging process, a gradual loss of bone mass results in osteopenia and osteoporosis. Heritable factors account for 60–80% of optimal bone mineralization, whereas modifiable factors such as nutrition, weight-bearing exercise, body mass, and hormonal milieu affect the development of osteopenia and osteoporosis in adulthood. Osteoporosis substantially increases the risk of skeletal fractures and further morbidity and mortality. The effective prevention of fractures by reducing the loss of bone mass is the primary goal for physicians treating people with osteoporosis. Other than pharmacologic agents, lifestyle adjustment, nutritional support, fall prevention strategies, exercise, and physical modalities can be used to treat osteoporosis or prevent further osteoporotic fracture. Each of these factors, alone or in combination, can be of benefit to people with osteoporosis and should be implemented following a detailed discussion with patients. This review comprises a systematic survey of the current literature on osteoporosis and its nonpharmacologic and nonsurgical treatment. It provides clinicians and healthcare workers with evidence-based information on the assessment and management of osteoporosis. However, numerous issues regarding osteoporosis and its treatment remain unexplored and warrant future investigation.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and hemiplegia often involve alterations in cortical function that are often widespread and may not be confined to the peri-infarct regions. Rehabilitation of these injuries may therefore require extensive and innovative physical modalities and exercise activities that enhance mobility. Disuse in limbs can occur in any brain injury derived from different etiologies and advances in rehabilitation indicate that neuromuscular stimulation of both the nerve supply and muscle groups involved impacts plasticity and prepares the limbs for stronger muscle responses during functional activities. Combined therapies are apparently more productive than monotherapies and this may include electroacupuncture and functional electrical stimulation to expedite recovery. The combination of mixed physiotherapeutic interventions also encourages biokinetics, hydrotherapy and robotic rehabilitation over a prolonged period to enable the patient to achieve functional goals. Recovery may not be achieved within a period of 6 months post injury as has previously been accepted and may even require lifelong participation.
