Surveys were undertaken for characterization and evaluation of genetic diversity of Jamun (SyzygiumcuminiiSkeels) of seedling origin for different morphological characters of tree characters and leaf characters during 2016-17 and 2017-18 in the Jamun growing in Northern Bastar Plateau region of Chhattisgarh areas. Investigations were undertaken during the entire vegetative phase to assess the distribution, range and to record the range of genetic variability of different morphological traits on the selected sixty trees. Mature leaves were plucked and analyzed for different parameters such as leaf surface and leaf glands. Results of evaluated Jamun genotypes showed wide variability for studied characteristic.

Jamun (Eugenia jambolana or Syzygium cuminii Skeels) is an important, large, evergreen beautiful tree of the myrtaceae family. Jamun is commonly known as java plum, black plum, jambul and Indian blackberry. It is widely consumed as fresh fruit which has considerable good nutritive value. It has high therapeutic and pharmacological properties because of constituent like tannins, alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, terpenoids, fattyacids, phenols, minerals, carbohydrates and vitamins. The tests on animals have proved for hypoglycaemic, diuretics, analgesic, antiinflammatory, antiplaque, antimicrobial, antidiarrhoel, antioxidant, gastro-protective and astringency. However, the pharmacological trials using seeds of Syzygium cuminii have been reported in the previous studies but other parts of the tree also have good potential which need to be explored. Jamun fruit is good source of iron along with minerals, sugars and other phytochemicals. The fruits have sub-acid spicy flavour and commonly used as dessert. Apart from eating as fresh, it can also be used for the preparation of delicious beverages, jelly, jam, squash, wine, vinegar and pickles.

Jamun (Syzygium cuminii Skeels.) is the medicinally important indigenous fruit tree of India belongs to the Myrtaceae family. The antidiabietic properties of Jamun brought higher market demand which stimulates to increase the fruit production and also brought the off season concept for commercial exploitation by paclobutrazol application. An investigation was carried out to study the effect of paclobutrazol and NAA application on yield attributing characters of nine years old jamun trees during 2017-18. The various treatment combinations are paclobutrazol (PBZ - 0, 0.50, 1.0 and 1.5 g a.i. m-1 of canopy diameter) and foliar spray of NAA (0, 50 ppm, 75 ppm and 100 ppm) application at different concentrations. The experiment results revealed that fruit length (2.87 cm), pulp – seed ratio (6.54), fruit weight (14.05 g), fruit retention (65.04 per cent) and yield (68.31 kg tree-1) were observed higher in the treatment combination of PBZ 1.0 g a.i. application with 75 ppm of NAA followed by PBZ 1.5 g a.i. application with 100 ppm of NAA and the lower values were registered in control. Jamun trees treated with paclobutrazol and NAA aided in early induction of enhanced flowering and yield attributing characters.

Tóm tắt: Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy Sến trung là cây ưa sáng, cây gỗ lớn thường xanh, có hình dáng đẹp. Sến trung phân bố rải rác ven các khe suối, ở những nơi có độ cao dưới 1.110 m, nhiệt độ trung bình năm trong khoảng 21,5–25,2 °C, độ ẩm không khí trung bình năm từ 83 đến 87 %, lượng mưa từ 2.773–3.642 mm/năm, trên các loại đất ferralit đỏ vàng với độ dày tầng đất từ 80 đến 100 cm. Thành phần cơ giới của đất chủ yếu là thịt nhẹ đến trung bình, đất hơi chua với pHKCl = 4–4,5, hàm lượng mùn từ 1,8 % đến 2,7 %, độ tàn che của rừng trong khoảng 0,4–0,8. Sến trung thường mọc kèm với các loài cây Dẻ gai sapa (Castanopsis chapaensis) và Trâm mốc (Syzygium cuminii), Trường vải (Paranephelium spirei), Trám trắng (Canarium album), Chò đen (Parashorea stellata) và Mít nài (Artocarpus asperula). Sến trung có mật độ cây tái sinh rất thấp và không tham gia vào công thức tổ thành. Tỷ lệ cây tốt khoảng 66,8–73,7 %. Cây tái sinh chủ yếu từ hạt chiếm khoảng 92,7–94,3 %. Cây tái sinh triển vọng tại Nam Đông (1.873 cây/ha), Phú Lộc (3.980 cây/ha).
