Varietal screening of Solanaceae accessions against R. solanacearum strains, agent of bacterial wilt in Côte d’Ivoire

Bacterial wilt caused by R. solanacearum is a constraint that limits the production of solanaceous in Côte d'Ivoire. The genetic control, which is more widely used, comes up against the genetic and phenotypic variability of the strains. The objective of this study was to screen commercial and traditional varieties of Solanaceae against Ivorian strains of different phylotypes to assess their spectrum of resistance to the disease. The level of virulence of the five strains of R. solanacearum was evaluated in semi-controlled conditions against eight varieties of Solanaceae (pepper, eggplant and tomato). Four groups of strains were identified according to the level of virulence. Group 4, composed of strains (RUN 1794 and RUN 1854) of phylotype III and I, respectively, and originating from the localities of Kondoukro and Yamoussoukro, was very virulent. The resistant varieties were for the F1 kalenda eggplant, for the yellow chilli from Burkina and for the F1 Lindo tomato. These varieties could be used in the fight against bacterial wilt in Côte d'Ivoire.

Performance of different mustard varieties in Terai zone of West Bengal

The research on varietal screening for a specific location has done since long time. But varietal screening of Indian mustard at Terai region has meagre hitherto. Therefore, an experiment was performed to evaluate the performance of different mustard varieties in Regional Research Sub-Station (Terai Zone), Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya in the year 2015-16 during Rabi season (Dec.- Feb.). The study was purposively done to evaluate five mustard varieties viz., T-9, Piloo, NC-1, PS-28 and B-9 in Terai Zone of West Bengal with respect to yield attributing characters. In brevity it was found that Pilloo is most suitable cultivar for studied areas.

Evaluation of the 19 varieties and accessions of tomato against bacterial wilt in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum E. F. Smith is one of the most harmful phytobacteriosis in the world. The search for varieties resistant or tolerant to this disease is the main method of control. However, there is very little information on tomato accessions and varieties deemed resistant or tolerant to the disease in Burkina Faso, hence the resistance assessment of 19 tomato varieties and accessions in the field in order to improve the productivity of tomatoes in Burkina Faso. With respect to varietal screening, a completely randomized Fisher block was used and agromorphological parameters were evaluated. The evaluation has shown that CRA 66, F1 Platinum, NC72TR4-4, Hawaii 7996, BF-Okitsu and FBT4 are more resistant with respective incidences of 1.25%; 1.25; 1.47%; 2.50%; 2.95% and 4.37%; while L390 was the most sensitive (38.80%). In terms of production, F1 Platinum, F1 Mongal, FBT3 and FBT4 gave the best net yields of 25.85; 25.47; 20.6 and 20.34 tonnes.ha-1. On the other hand, some accessions (CRA66 and BF-Okitsu), which are less sensitive to the pathogen, gave derisory yields. In view of the results obtained, market gardeners in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso can be advised of INERA varieties FBT3 and FBT4 and the F1 Platinum and F1 Mongal hybrids for their good behavior in terms of resistance to the disease and/or of correct yield in infected soils.Keywords: Burkina Faso, R. solanacearum, tomato, varietal resistance

EVALUATION OF RICE GENOTYPE AGAINST LEAF FOLDER, CASE WORM AND GRASSHOPPER DESECRATION UNDER FIELD CONDITION

The research on varietal screening of rice against leaf folder, caseworm and grasshopper damage was conducted during 2019 in Rampur, Chitwan to study the host plant resistant of different varieties of rice under field condition. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications and seven treatments namely i) Makawanpur -1 ii) Mansuli iii) Radha-4 iv) Ramdhan v) Sabitri vi) Sama Mansuli sub-1 and vii) sukkha-3. The experiment revealed that lowest population of leaf folder, caseworm and grasshopper was recorded in variety Radha-4 followed by Ramdhan. The experiment showed the yield loss was significantly lower in Radha-4 followed by Sabitri and Ramdhan due to leaf folder, caseworm and grasshopper. So Radha-4 and sabitri would be good option in rice production for reducing insect pest damage.
