Haselhorst (Zentr. F. Chir., 1926, no. 25) gives 2 cases of intestinal obstruction, caused in one case by figs, in the other by dried fruit. Depending on the type, quality, and quantity of food taken and the possibility of the formation of toxins, various degrees of ileus ъa can develop, according to the author, ranging from slight narrowing to severe.

Herein we report on the synthesis and the effects of gradual loading of TiO2 nanotube array layers with ZnO upon surface wettability. Two-step preparation was chosen, where TiO2 nanotube layers, grown in a first instance by anodization of a Ti foil, were gradually loaded with controlled amounts of ZnO using the reactive RF magnetron sputtering. After crystallization annealing, the formerly amorphous TiO2 nanotubes were converted to predominantly anatase crystalline phase, as detected by XRD measurements. The as-prepared nanotubes exhibited a well-aligned columnar structure, 1.6 μm long and 88 nm in diameter, and a small concentration of oxygen vacancies. Ti2+ and Ti3+ occur along with the Ti4+ state upon sputter-cleaning the layer surfaces from contaminants. The Ti2+ and Ti3+ signals diminish with gradual ZnO loading. As demonstrated by the VB-XPS data, the ZnO loading is accompanied by a slight narrowing of the band gap of the materials. A combined effect of material modification and surface roughness was taken into consideration to explain the evolution of surface super-hydrophilicity of the materials under UV irradiation. The loading process resulted in increasing surface wettability with approx. 33%, and in a drastic extension of activation decay, which clearly points out to the effect of ZnO-TiO2 heterojunctions.

Research of dynamics of nonlinear corrosion processes of non-nickel titanium shape memory alloy Ti-20Nb-10Ta is performed. Samples were placed in mediums imitating physiological liquids, with ðÍ from 1.68 to 9.18. 3 types of samples were used: in an initial state, after thermal (annealing) and surface mechanical treatment. After annealing, there is a slight narrowing of the X-ray peaks, which indicates stress relief. New phases are not allocated. The alloy is a substitution solution with a b-Ti lattice. The greatest release of titanium ions was observed in solution with the sourest environment and samples after annealing. Release of niobium and tantalum ions in solution with any acidity was not observed.

Abstract In this study, we describe the case of a 5-year-old boy who presumably presented with Loeys–Dietz syndrome. A huge aneurysm of the ascending aorta and the aortic arch extended beyond the left subclavian artery and was accompanied by a slight narrowing of the aortic isthmus.

Sperm ultrastructure in two species of the marine snail family Olividae is examined. Euspermatozoa of both species are composed of a conical, membrane-bound acrosomal vesicle; an axial rod and a basal plate similar in both species; a solid and highly electron-dense nucleus; an elongate midpiece consisting of the axoneme sheathed by helical mitochondrial elements; an elongate glycogen piece; a double electron-dense ring at the junction of the midpiece and glycogen piece; and a free tail region. The slight narrowing in the acrosomal vesicle invagination is situated in different levels between Olivancillaria deshayesiana and Olivancillaria carcellesi. This morphology could be considered as a specific character. The length of the nucleus in O. carcellesi and in O. deshayesiana is shorter than that of other neogastropods, and could be diagnostic at family level.

A patient presented with a painful, pulsating nodosity with marked tenderness on the right side of her neck. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exhibited pathological signal changes in the perivascular tissue of the carotid bifurcation area and around the external carotid artery. Similarly, Doppler sonography revealed an echo-poor wall change with outward bulging and slight narrowing of the affected vessel lumen. The clinical symptoms and our findings led to the diagnosis of carotidynia. We proposed that cervical MRI and Doppler sonography could be used for diagnosing carotidynia.

Two species of nematodes were recovered from the Meller's chamaeleon from Nyasaland, which died at the London Zoo. They comprised ten females and eight males of Foleyella candezi from the axilla and peritoneal cavity, and two adult females of Abbreviata sp. from the gut. Specific determination was not possible for the latter species, owing to the paucity of the material. The females are thread-like and very slightly flattened dorso-ventrally. They have an average length of 94.8 mm. and range from 73 to 124 mm. The width is more or less uniform, average 0.5 mm. but becomes narrow at 1 mm. from the tip of the tail. The anterior end is bluntly rounded and in some specimens has a slightly bulbous appearance when observed from the lateral aspect. This is due to a slight narrowing at the junction of the oesophagus and intestine. The tail is more attenuated than the anterior end and it is slightly curved ventrad and marked by a shallow groove running ventrally from the anus to the tip where it is flanked by two minute papillae-like structures. The shallow stoma is somewhat oval in shape and surrounded by ten minute papillae, six of which form an inner circle and four an outer circle. The mid-dorsal and mid-ventral papillae of the inner circle are more conspicuous than the others.
