Hydrogen Absorption during Case Hardening of Steels EN20MnCr5 (SAE5120) and EN18CrNiMo7-6 (SAE4820)

Damages to case-hardened components are often associated with the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement due to their specific fracture pattern. In the present work, the effects of the case hardening process on the hydrogen content in the material were investigated and the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties were examined. In order to determine not only the influence of the heat treatment process but also the influence of the material, the case-hardening steels EN20MnCr5 (SAE5120) and EN18CrNiMo7-6 (SAE4820) with different degrees of purity were investigated. From the results it can be deduced that the sulphidic and oxidic inclusions have no significant influence on the hydrogen content. When checking the mechanical properties, it was shown in the incremental step loading technique according to ASTM F1624 that a purely case-hardened condition only has a slight tendency to hydrogen embrittlement. However, if the material is additionally loaded with hydrogen, the material fails significantly below the maximum expected load in the incremental step loading test, which is to be interpreted as a clear indication of failure due to hydrogen embrittlement. However, the fracture patterns of these two states do not show any significant differences. Therefore, it does not seem possible to attribute damage to a case-hardened component to hydrogen embrittlement on the basis of the fracture pattern alone.

Classification and Management of Failed Fixation of the Volar Marginal Fragment in Distal Radius Fractures

Greater understanding of specific fracture patterns following distal radius fractures has arisen with the advent of volar plating. The volar marginal fragment (VMF) is a small peripheral piece of bone which is critical to carpal stability. Failure to achieve good fixation of the VMF can result in volar subluxation of the carpus and distal radioulnar joint instability. Due to its small, distal nature, this fragment can be easily missed and difficult to fix. Loss of reduction of the VMF following operative fixation presents specific challenges and surgical considerations dictated by patient characteristics and timing. Our goal of this review is to present a classification system for these failed VMFs which can help guide surgical treatment as well as expected outcomes.

The Impact of Specific Fracture Characteristics of Low-energy Fractures of the Pelvis in the Elderly on Mortality

Background:Pelvic fractures in the elderly are associated with relevant morbidity and mortality. Both might be determined by fracture morphology and/or patient characteristics. The aim of this project is to investigate the prognostic value of specific fracture characteristics with respect to overall survival and to compare it with an established classification system. Methods:Retrospective analysis of patients ≥60 years, treated conservatively for a CT-scan verified, low-energy pelvic ring fracture between August 2006 and December 2018. Survival data was available from patients’ charts and cantonal or national registries. The prognostic value of fracture characteristic describing the anterior and posterior involvement of the pelvic ring was investigated. This analysis was repeated after patients were stratified into a high-risk vs a low-risk group according to patient characteristic (age, gender, comorbidities, mobility, living situation). This allowed to assess the impact of the different fracture morphologies on mortality in fit vs. frail senior patients separately Results:Overall, 428 patients (83.4% female) with a mean age of 83.7 years were included. Two thirds of patients were still living in their home and mobile without walking aid at baseline. In-hospital mortality was 0.7%, overall, one-year mortality 16.9%. An independent and significant association of age, gender and comorbidities to overall survival was found. Further, the occurrence of a horizontal sacral fracture as well as a ventral comminution or dislocation was associated with an increased mortality. The effect of a horizontal sacral fracture was more accentuated in low-risk patients while the ventral fracture components showed a larger effect on survival in high-risk patients.Conclusion:Specific fracture characteristics may indicate a higher risk of mortality in conservatively treated patients with a low-energy pelvic ring fracture. Hence, they should be taken into account in future treatment algorithms and decisions on patient management.

Ensuring fire safety during the operation of oil and gas equipment based on the results of compact specimens tests

The paper considers the application of the test method of compact specimens to assess the degree of damage of steel elements of oil and gas equipment. According to experimental data, an analytical dependence was obtained linking the degree of damage to the index of the specific fracture work, intended to assess the possibility of safe operation of explosive and fire-hazardous equipment.

Energy Requirement for Rock Breakage in Laboratory Experiments and Engineering Operations: A Review

Based on the review of a wide range of literature, this paper finds that: (1) the average specific surface energy of various single crystals is only 0.8 J/m2. (2) The average specific fracture energy of the rocks with a pre-crack under static cleavage tests is 4.6 J/m2. (3) The average specific fracture energy of the rocks with a pre-cut notch but with no pre-crack under static tensile fracture (mode I) tests is 4.6 J/m2. (4) The average specific fracture energies of regular rock specimens with neither pre-made crack nor pre-cut notch are 26.6, 13.9 and 25.7 J/m2 under uniaxial compression, tension and shear tests, respectively. (5) The average specific fracture energy of irregular single quartz particles under uniaxial compression is 13.8 J/m2. (6) The average specific fracture energy of particle beds under drop weight tests is 74.0 J/m2. (7) The average specific fracture energy of multi-particles in milling tests is 72.5 J/m2. (8) The average specific energy of rocks in percussive drilling is 399 J/m3, that in full-scale cutting is 131 J/m3, and that in rotary drilling is 157 J/m3. (9) The average energy efficiency of milling is only 1.10%. (10) The accurate measurements of specific fracture energy in blasting are too few to draw reliable conclusions. In the last part of the paper, the effects of inter-granular displacement, loading rate, confining pressure, surface area measurement, premade crack, attrition and thermal energy on the specific fracture energy of rock are discussed.

Site-Specific Fracture Healing: Comparison between Diaphysis and Metaphysis in the Mouse Long Bone

The process of fracture healing varies depending upon internal and external factors, such as the fracture site, mode of injury, and mechanical environment. This review focuses on site-specific fracture healing, particularly diaphyseal and metaphyseal healing in mouse long bones. Diaphyseal fractures heal by forming the periosteal and medullary callus, whereas metaphyseal fractures heal by forming the medullary callus. Bone healing in ovariectomized mice is accompanied by a decrease in the medullary callus formation both in the diaphysis and metaphysis. Administration of estrogen after fracture significantly recovers the decrease in diaphyseal healing but fails to recover the metaphyseal healing. Thus, the two bones show different osteogenic potentials after fracture in ovariectomized mice. This difference may be attributed to the heterogeneity of the skeletal stem cells (SSCs)/osteoblast progenitors of the two bones. The Hox genes that specify the patterning of the mammalian skeleton during embryogenesis are upregulated during the diaphyseal healing. Hox genes positively regulate the differentiation of osteoblasts from SSCs in vitro. During bone grafting, the SSCs in the donor’s bone express Hox with adaptability in the heterologous bone. These novel functions of the Hox genes are discussed herein with reference to the site-specificity of fracture healing.

Identification of AAAS Composites Mechanical Fracture Parameters

The paper deals with selected alkali-activated aluminosilicate (AAAS) composites based on ceramic precursors in terms of characterization by mechanical fracture parameters. Two composites made of brick dust as a precursor and an alkaline activator with a silicate modulus Ms = 1.0 were investigated. The composites differed in the fineness of grinding of the precursor – in the first set it was 0 to 1 mm, in the second set 0 to 0.3 mm. The filler was crushed brick. The test specimens had nominal dimensions of 40 × 40 × 160 mm and were provided with notches in the middle of the span up to 1/3 of the depth of the specimens after 28 days of hardening. Five to six specimens from each composite set were tested. The specimens were subjected to three-point bending tests, in which force vs. displacement (deflection in the middle of the span) diagrams (F–d diagrams) and force vs. crack mouth opening displacement (F–CMOD) diagrams were recorded. After correction of these diagrams, the values of static modulus of elasticity, effective fracture toughness, effective toughness and specific fracture energy were determined using the Effective Crack Model and the Work-of-Fracture method. After the fracture experiments, the values of informative compressive strength were determined on one of the fractured parts. At the same time, the values of static modulus of elasticity, tensile strength and specific fracture energy were identified using artificial neural networks and F–d diagrams measured and simulated in the ATENA FEM software. All evaluations included the determination of basic statistics of parameters.

Dynamic crack propagation in weak snowpack layers: insights from high-resolution, high-speed photography

Dynamic crack propagation in snow is of key importance for avalanche release. Nevertheless, it has received very little experimental attention. With the introduction of the propagation saw test (PST) in the mid-2000s, a number of studies have used particle tracking analysis of high-speed video recordings of PST experiments to study crack propagation processes in snow. However, due to methodological limitations, these studies have provided limited insight into dynamical processes such as the evolution of crack speed within a PST or the touchdown distance, i.e. the length from the crack tip to the trailing point where the slab comes to rest on the crushed weak layer. To study such dynamical effects, we recorded PST experiments using a portable high-speed camera with a horizontal resolution of 1280 pixels at rates of up to 20 000 frames s−1. We then used digital image correlation (DIC) to derive high-resolution displacement and strain fields in the slab, weak layer and substrate. The high frame rates enabled us to calculate time derivatives to obtain velocity and acceleration fields. We demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the DIC method by showing measurements from three PST experiments, resulting in slab fracture, crack arrest and full propagation. We also present a methodology to determine relevant characteristics of crack propagation, namely the crack speed (20–30 m s−1), its temporal evolution along the column and touchdown distance (2.7 m) within a PST, and the specific fracture energy of the weak layer (0.3–1.7 J m−2). To estimate the effective elastic modulus of the slab and weak layer as well as the weak layer specific fracture energy, we used a recently proposed mechanical model. A comparison to already-established methods showed good agreement. Furthermore, our methodology provides insight into the three different propagation results found with the PST and reveals intricate dynamics that are otherwise not accessible.
