The importance of Multi National Enterprise Groups (MNEs) on the economy is ever-growing and at the same time, it becomes more complex to capture their activities and structures accurately in official national statistics. The establishment of Large Case Units and the introduction of profiling of MNEs are measures to capture the activities of MNEs correctly so that consistency between statistics can be achieved. At international level, the same challenges can be found. In Europe the existence of the European Statistical System and accompanying legal frameworks make it possible to organize European collaboration, resulting in a EuroGroups Register and European profiling and the Early Warning System. The benefit from a Global Group Register (GGR) seems evident: providing unique identification of MNEs and insight in the structure of internationally operating MNEs helps to create valuable information for policymakers on many different economic themes. At a global level, we do not have legal facilities like those in the EU, which makes it important to look for other solutions. An initial GGR has to be built upon publicly available sources and upon sources from commercial data providers. The benefits of establishing a Global Group Register are multiple and work in this area should be encouraged.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the convergence and determinants of anti-corruption disclosures of extractive firms in Africa. Design/methodology/approach The study uses an unbalanced panel data of 27 firms operating in 5 African countries covering the period 2006 to 2018. Corporate data is collected from the global reporting initiative (GRI) database. The study uses an index to measure overall disclosure and individual items are coded as binary. The study uses fixed effects, panel logistic and panel-corrected standard error regression, depending on the type of dependent variable used. Findings The results indicate that the determinants of anti-corruption disclosure are membership in the United Nations global compact (UNGC) and Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, multi-national enterprise status, corruption perception index and human development index (HDI). Specifically, UNGC membership and multi-national status enhance the disclosure on corruption analysis. Countries with a high prevalence of corruption tend to disclose more on corruption analysis. Disclosure on corruption training is high among firms that are UNGC signatories, countries with a high HDI and countries with a high prevalence of corruption. There is a weak effect of firm-level, industry-level and country-level factors on disclosures on corruption response. Research limitations/implications The study provides insights on the use of GRI 205: Anti-Corruption, which has relevant implications for practitioners, policymakers and the academic community. Originality/value This study is premier in exploring anti-corruption disclosure with a special focus on extractive firms in Africa. It is also unique in providing a test of both beta and sigma convergence among the firms.

Corruption is an insidious cancer of national bodies politic. Corrupt practices harshly cut across classes and castes, cripple institutions, disturb communities, and infect the very structure of people’s lives. Corruption destroys nations and saps their moral fiber. Moreover, corruption is invasive and unforgiving. It degrades governance, distorts and criminalizes national priorities, and privileges skimming natural resource wealth, patrimonial theft, and personal and family gains over concern for the commonweal. In Africa, corruption is rife, with half to two-thirds of all African countries deeply compromised in this manner. Only three or four countries are non-corrupt. Beating back corruption and thus delivering economic development, improved governance, and a sustainable belief in the overarching national enterprise are goals available to any of Africa’s ruling regimes when they renounce kleptocratic and rent-seeking ambitions
