The effect of temperature on the breakdown performance of metallized capacitor-grade BOPP film was characterized using a large-area multi-breakdown measurement method. The measurements conducted in the temperature range from room temperature to 100 °C revealed a linearly decreasing trend in the characteristic 63.2 % breakdown probability after 60 °C and the presence of a smaller weak spot subpopulation. The weak spots remained relatively unaffected by temperature, and first breakdowns occurred in a seemingly statistical manner. The brief exposure to elevated temperature was considered as one explanation behind the variations in the number of weak points, but fluctuations in film quality and Weibull dynamics were seen are more probable explanations. The results demonstrate the possibility of multiple breakdown mechanisms and their different temperature-dependency, and demonstrate the high short-term breakdown strength of BOPP film even at high temperatures.

Two kinds of gate oxides, direct thermal oxidation in a nitrous oxide ambient at 1250°C(TGO) and a PECVD oxide followed by a post deposition oxidation in nitrous at 1150°C (DGO) were studied. DGO showed a lower interface trap density and was able to provide a higher current as being implemented in MOSFETs through the improved channel mobility. However the 6.45 MV/cm average breakdown field of DGO is lower than the 10.1 MV/cm breakdown field of TGO. The lower breakdown field, more leaky behavior and the existence of multiple breakdown mechanisms suggest that DGO needs further improvements before it can be used in real applications.

Medical accidents, such as those that occur as a consequence of errors in medical systems, rarely happen because of a single failure. They are usually the consequence of a multiple breakdown in the system. This chapter explores the potential for risk and, demonstrates the need to improve design interventions in a VLITP context. It considers issues that range from the design, packaging and labelling of VLITP environment in which medical systems error might occur. The ergonomics systems approach to VLITP is an appropriate method for involving all key users and for addressing their needs. This requires generic issues to be considered. Such issues include: task design, interface analysis, communication interface, variation in user characteristics, and needs (including motivation and culture), training needs, work organizational issues, and the evaluation of interventions and current practice.
