The Endangered Species Condoms project was launched 10 years ago to bring the discussion of human population growth back into the environmental movement with a focus on human rights and reproductive justice. In that time, more than 1 million condoms have been distributed by thousands of volunteers. The principles of social marketing are used through the Endangered Species Condoms project to create a national discourse around the population issue. They are introduced in both formal teaching settings like high school and university classrooms as well as informal settings like community events and after-hours programing at zoos and museums to reach a broad, diverse audience.

The population issue is one of the most complex subjects to analyze since all the science dimensions are related to it in varied proportions. In this chapter, population is analyzed according to consumer income and expenditure. Both the dynamics and disparities among countries regarding population, income, and expenditure are studied and multiple analyses from different views are undertaken. Given the numerous categories of consumer expenditure, only the food and non-alcoholic beverage consumer expenditure category is researched, in this chapter, both from a general perspective and from a narrower viewpoint restricted to each class. Several forecasts of the consequences of increasing the rice, wheat, corn, and coffee consumption are made.

Medicine is the science of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease; its focus is the needs of an individual patient. Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of a community—medicine on a larger scale. The aim of government should be to create the health and happiness of its people. Politics is, therefore, public health medicine on a grand scale. Likewise, prevention of infection can be seen as an individual issue, a population issue, or a global issue. The principles of prevention of infection, whether at the level of the individual patient or at the level of a population, are the avoidance of infectious agents, the maintenance of innate immunity, and the stimulation of acquired immunity. In this chapter, these principles are reviewed in relation to the prevention of cholera, polio, blood-borne viral infections, and healthcare-associated infections.
