Magnetic and Restivity Investigation of Geologic Structures in the Basement Complex of Aran-Orin, Kwara-State, Nigeria.

The study aims to integrate magnetic and vertical electrical sounding (VES) resistivity methods to determine groundwater prospective in part of Aran-orin Sheet 224. A total of three traverses were established in the study area for the vertical electrical sounding using the Schlumberger electrode configuration. A total of 17 VES points was established using the ABEM Terrameter SAS 1000C model with maximum half-current electrode spacing (AB/2) of 120m. A total of eight traverses were established for the magnetics survey with station intervals of 10 m and inter-profile spacing of 100 m. The magnetic and VES data were qualitatively and quantitatively interpreted using IPI2WIN and OASIS MONTAJ package respectively. The geo-electric sections reveal a maximum of 3-4 layers beneath the sub-surface an overburden thickness ranges from 8.2 m to 64.9 m and the corresponding lithology inferred are topsoil, weathered Rock, fractured basement and fresh basement. The depth to basement using half-width method showed that the depth ranges from 8.4-56.04 m, which corresponds with the electrical survey.

Geophysical prospecting for epithermal gold deposits (a case study from the Maletoivayam gold ore field, Kamchatka Peninsula)

Research subject. The high-sulfidation (HS-type) epithermal gold deposits of the Maletoyvayam ore field, which is located in the volcanic belts of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Materials and methods. The paper presents the results of geophysical and petrophysical studies carried out by “NPP VIRG-Rudgeofizika” (2016–2017 years) in the central part of the Maletoyvayam ore field hosting HS-type gold deposits. Results. The presented case study shows the potential of geophysical prospecting for HS-type epithermal gold deposits located within altered rock areas. On the basis of the conducted magnetic surveys, fragments of a ring structure broken by faults and the hydrothermally altered bodies within the Neogene volcanogenic-sedimentary sequence of the andesite composition were identified. Using the 3D inversion of magnetic data, the shape, size and structure of the hydrothermally altered bodies were estimated. The electrical survey data allowed the hydrothermally altered areas to be differentiated in terms of composition. As a result, zoning of hydrothermally altered areas was conducted, and ore-bearing sites and gold-bearing bodies of monoquartzites in the plan and cross-section were determined. Conclusions. Geophysical techniques for prospecting HS-type epithermal gold deposits are effective in distinguishing important gold-related features within the altered zone thereby facilitating identification of specific drill targets.

Geo Electric Study in Hydrogeology According to the Axis Hassi Naga – Hassi Khebi of Tindouf (Southwestern Algeria)

The hydrogeological environment of the Saharan North East region of Tindouf is of utmost interest, particularly in agriculture. In fact, exploitation and exploration processes must be analysed to ensure sufficient water production. This study demonstrates the value of spatial processing and exploitation of geoelectric and geological data in the study area and facilitates interpretation. The results of the electrical survey and the spatial analysis of the data allowed us to design a complete model that met the needs of hydrogeology. The applied methodology consists in breaking down our subject into three (3) classes of entities: geomatics, geophysics and hydrogeology. Synthetic mapping based on continuity is the result of studying two sites (Hassi Naga and Hassi Khebi) for geological analysis. Knowing that the electrical resistivity is between 0 and 3000 Ohm-meter, we were able to construct thematic maps showing the spatial distribution of the facies and the probable positions of the boreholes. The study provided with a geo-spatial model highlighting the impact of measurements in hydrogeology of the area considered that was called SIHE (Information System for Environmental Hydrogeology).

Delineation of Seawater Intrusion Using Geo-Electrical Survey in a Coastal Aquifer of Kamala Beach, Phuket, Thailand

The coastal areas of Phuket Island are facing the risk of seawater intrusion, because intense anthropic activity due to urbanization and the expansion of tourism influences coastal hydrologic systems. Indeed, the Kamala sub-district—on the western part of Phuket Island—is a well-known and attractive destination for tourists. Previous research indicates that there is likely to be a seawater intrusion in Kamala. The main purpose of this study was to delineate the seawater intrusion problem in a coastal aquifer in Kamala. Geo-electrical surveys of four lines were successfully conducted in the study area. Two-dimensional (2D) inversion models from the resistivity data show high-resolution subsurface resistivity anomalies of seawater intrusion. The concentration of the seawater intrusion decreases eastward toward the inland areas. Based on a sample measurement, the contaminated zone of seawater has a resistivity value smaller than 30 Ohm-m, and the empirical relationship between the formation conductivity and fluid conductivity of the study area was established. Finally, time-lapse Electrical Resistivity Imaging (time-lapse ERI) was conducted to prove that there was no presence of clay layers in study area; thus, the low resistivity plumes (smaller than 30 Ohm-m) were scientifically interpreted as being seawater intrusion.
