AbstractFor a separable finite diffuse measure space $${\mathcal {M}}$$ M and an orthonormal basis $$\{\varphi _n\}$$ { φ n } of $$L^2({\mathcal {M}})$$ L 2 ( M ) consisting of bounded functions $$\varphi _n\in L^\infty ({\mathcal {M}})$$ φ n ∈ L ∞ ( M ) , we find a measurable subset $$E\subset {\mathcal {M}}$$ E ⊂ M of arbitrarily small complement $$|{\mathcal {M}}{\setminus } E|<\epsilon $$ | M \ E | < ϵ , such that every measurable function $$f\in L^1({\mathcal {M}})$$ f ∈ L 1 ( M ) has an approximant $$g\in L^1({\mathcal {M}})$$ g ∈ L 1 ( M ) with $$g=f$$ g = f on E and the Fourier series of g converges to g, and a few further properties. The subset E is universal in the sense that it does not depend on the function f to be approximated. Further in the paper this result is adapted to the case of $${\mathcal {M}}=G/H$$ M = G / H being a homogeneous space of an infinite compact second countable Hausdorff group. As a useful illustration the case of n-spheres with spherical harmonics is discussed. The construction of the subset E and approximant g is sketched briefly at the end of the paper.

A right Engel sink of an element g of a group G is a set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every x ∈ G all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$ . (Thus, g is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$ .) It is proved that if every element of a compact (Hausdorff) group G has a countable right Engel sink, then G has a finite normal subgroup N such that G/N is locally nilpotent.

An Engel sink of an element [Formula: see text] of a group [Formula: see text] is a set [Formula: see text] such that for every [Formula: see text] all sufficiently long commutators [Formula: see text] belong to [Formula: see text]. (Thus, [Formula: see text] is an Engel element precisely when we can choose [Formula: see text].) It is proved that if every element of a compact (Hausdorff) group [Formula: see text] has a countable (or finite) Engel sink, then [Formula: see text] has a finite normal subgroup [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] is locally nilpotent. This settles a question suggested by J. S. Wilson.

Abstract We say that an element g of a group G is almost right Engel if there is a finite set R(g) such that for every x∈G, there is a positive integer n(x,g) such that […[[g,x],x],…,x]∈R(g) if x is repeated at least n(x,g) times. Thus, g is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose R(g)={1}. We prove that if all elements of a compact (Hausdorff) group G are almost right Engel, then G has a finite normal subgroup N such that G/N is locally nilpotent. If in addition there is a uniform bound ∣R(g)∣⩽m for the orders of the corresponding sets, then the subgroup N can be chosen of order bounded in terms of m. The proofs use the Wilson–Zelmanov theorem saying that profinite Engel groups are locally nilpotent and previous results of the authors about compact groups in which all elements are almost left Engel.

AbstractLet G be a compact Hausdorff group and let H be a closed subgroup of G. We introduce pseudo-differential operators with symbols on the homogeneous space {G/H}. We present a necessary and sufficient condition on symbols for which these operators are in the class of Hilbert–Schmidt operators. We also give a characterization of and a trace formula for the trace class pseudo-differential operators on the homogeneous space {G/H}.

Abstract Let (G,+) be a locally compact abelian Hausdorff group, 𝓀 is a finite automorphism group of G, κ = card𝒦 and let µ be a regular compactly supported complex-valued Borel measure on G such that $\mu ({\rm{G}}) = {1 \over \kappa }$ . We find the continuous solutions f, g : G → ℂ of the functional equation $$\sum\limits_{k \in {\cal K}} {\sum\limits_{\lambda \in {\cal K}} {\int_{\rm{G}} {{\rm{f}}({\rm{x}} + {\rm{k}} \cdot {\rm{y}} + } \lambda \cdot {\rm{s}}){\rm{d}}\mu ({\rm{s}}) = {\rm{g}}({\rm{y}}) + \kappa {\rm{f}}({\rm{x}}),\,{\rm{x}},{\rm{y}} \in {\rm{G}},} } $$ in terms of k-additive mappings. This equations provides a common generalization of many functional equations (quadratic, Jensen’s, Cauchy equations).

AbstractFor a group G first order definable in a structure M, we continue the study of the “definable topological dynamics” of G (from [9] for example). The special case when all subsets of G are definable in the given structure M is simply the usual topological dynamics of the discrete group G; in particular, in this case, the words “externally definable” and “definable” can be removed in the results described below. Here we consider the mutual interactions of three notions or objects: a certain model-theoretic invariant G*/(G*)000M of G, which appears to be “new” in the classical discrete case and of which we give a direct description in the paper; the [externally definable] generalised Bohr compactification of G; [externally definable] strong amenability. Among other things, we essentially prove: (i) the “new” invariant G*/(G*)000M lies in between the externally definable generalised Bohr compactification and the definable Bohr compactification, and these all coincide when G is definably strongly amenable and all types in SG(M) are definable; (ii) the kernel of the surjective homomorphism from G*/(G*)000M to the definable Bohr compactification has naturally the structure of the quotient of a compact (Hausdorff) group by a dense normal subgroup; (iii) when Th(M) is NIP, then G is [externally] definably amenable iff it is externally definably strongly amenable. In the situation when all types in SG(M) are definable, one can just work with the definable (instead of externally definable) objects in the above results.

AbstractWe define a pseudometric on the set of all unbounded subsets of a metric space. The Kolmogorov quotient of this pseudometric space is a complete metric space. The definition of the pseudometric is guided by the principle that two unbounded subsets have distance 0 whenever they stay sublinearly close. Based on this pseudometric we introduce and study a general concept of boundaries of metric spaces. Such a boundary is the closure of a subset in the Kolmogorov quotient determined by an arbitrarily chosen family of unbounded subsets. Our interest lies in those boundaries which we get by choosing unbounded cyclic sub(semi)groups of a finitely generated group (or more general of a compactly generated, locally compact Hausdorff group). We show that these boundaries are quasi-isometric invariants and determine them in the case of nilpotent groups as a disjoint union of certain spheres (or projective spaces). In addition we apply this concept to vertex-transitive graphs with polynomial growth and to random walks on nilpotent groups.
