Development of a Hepatoprotective Herbal Drug from Turnera diffusa

The incidence of liver diseases, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and drug-induced liver injury, continues to rise and is one of the leading causes of acute hepatitis. Current trends suggest that these types of conditions will increase in the coming years. There are few drugs available for the prevention or treatment of hepatic diseases, and there is a growing need for the development of safe hepatoprotective agents. The medicinal plant, Turnera diffusa, has many ethnopharmacological uses, one of which is the production of a flavonoid named hepatodamianol, which is the principal component responsible for this plant’s hepatoprotective properties. In the present study, we describe the development and standardization of an active extract obtained from T. diffusa. We conducted nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to identify hepatodamianol unambiguously in each sample. Using this extract, hepatoprotection could be demonstrated in vivo for the first time. The hepatoprotective effect did not display a significant difference in vivo when compared with silymarin used as a positive control at the same doses. Implementation of quality criteria used for standardization, such as flavonoid and hepatodamianol content, hepatoprotective activity, and absence of residual solvents, will allow future preclinical trials with this herbal drug.

Nicht-Interventionelle Studie zum Einfluss eines Damiana-Präparates auf die Verbesserung der Symptomatik des Mangels oder Verlusts von sexuellem Verlangen bei Frauen

ZusammenfassungBlattextrakte von Damiana (Turnera diffusa) werden in der Therapie des Mangels oder Verlusts von sexuellem Verlangen eingesetzt. Zur Erhebung der Veränderung der empfundenen klinischen Symptomatik wurde eine multizentrische, nicht-interventionelle Studie (NIS) bei Frauen (n=70) durchgeführt. Nach achtwöchiger Einnahme eines pflanzlichen Arzneimittels mit Damiana-Extrakt (675 mg täglich) zeigten die Patientinnen (n=35; 46,1±10,9 Jahre) eine signifikante Zunahme beim weiblichen sexuellen Funktionsindex (Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-d); p<0,01) und dessen Domänen. Währenddessen sank der Score der weiblichen sexuellen Belastungsskala (Female Sexual Distress Scale–Revised (FSDS-R)) signifikant (p<0,01) bei tendenzieller Zunahme der Lebensqualität (Münchner Lebensqualitäts-Dimensionen Liste (MLDL)). Die Ergebnisse der NIS legen nahe, dass das Arzneimittel einen positiven Beitrag auf die individuelle Symptomatik sowie den empfundenen persönlichen Leidensdruck leisten kann und können daher als Basis für konfirmatorische klinische Studien dienen.

Currently Applied Extraction Processes for Secondary Metabolites from Lippia turbinata and Turnera diffusa and Future Perspectives

The poleo (Lippia turbinata Griseb.) and damiana (Turnera diffusa Wild) are two of the most valued species in the Mexican semidesert due to their medicinal uses. The conventional essential oil extraction process is hydrodistillation, and for the extraction of antioxidants, the use of organic solvents. However, these techniques are time-consuming and degrade thermolabile molecules, and the efficiency of the process is dependent on the affinity of the solvent for bioactive compounds. Likewise, they generate solvent residues such as methanol, hexane, petroleum ether, toluene, chloroform, etc. Therefore, in recent years, ecofriendly alternatives such as ohmic heating, microwaves, ultrasound, and supercritical fluids have been studied. These methodologies allow reducing the environmental impact and processing times, in addition to increasing yields at a lower cost. Currently, there is no up-to-date information that provides a description of the ecofriendly trends for the recovery process of essential oils and antioxidants from Lippia turbinata and Turnera diffusa. This review includes relevant information on the most recent advancements in these processes, including conditions and methodological foundation.

Sexuelle Unlust – Wirkmechanismen des natürlichen Aphrodisiakums Damiana (Turnera diffusa)

ZusammenfassungSexuelle Unlust bei Frauen ist eine häufig auftretende und meist multifaktorielle Symptomatik in jedem Alter. Entsteht daraus ein individueller Leidensdruck, einhergehend mit einer schlechten Lebensqualität, dann leiden Frauen daran umfassender und möglicherweise schwerwiegender als Männer. Ihre sexuellen Probleme werden jedoch im klinischen Umfeld oft nicht erkannt und bleiben unbehandelt, denn nur 20–34 % der Betroffenen suchen aktiv Hilfe bei einem Arzt. Die Auslöser mangelnder Libido können vielfältig sein und neben stressigen Lebensphasen auch an bestehende Medikationen, den demografischen Hintergrund, Probleme in der Partnerschaft oder Umstellungen der Hormone z. B. in den Wechseljahren gekoppelt sein. Pharmakotherapeutisch stehen jedoch nur relativ wenige Optionen für die Behandlung zur Verfügung. Neben einer nur in der Off-Label-Anwendung möglichen Verabreichung von transdermalem Testosteron oder Dehydroepiandrosteron, der Überweisung an andere Fachgebiete oder einer interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit kann ein möglicher Baustein der Behandlung in der Verwendung geeigneter Phytopharmaka liegen. Durch eine Gesamtwirkung der beobachteten Einzelwirkungen von Inhaltsstoffen der Pflanze Damiana (Turnera diffusa) aus der Familie der Safranmalven (Turneraceae) können daraus hergestellte Arzneimittel eine gute Behandlungsoption mit einem positiven Einfluss auf eine verminderte Libido darstellen.

Estrogenic Plants: to Prevent Neurodegeneration and Memory Loss and Other Symptoms in Women After Menopause

In mammals, sexual hormones such as estrogens play an essential role in maintaining brain homeostasis and function. Estrogen deficit in the brain induces many undesirable symptoms such as learning and memory impairment, sleep and mood disorders, hot flushes, and fatigue. These symptoms are frequent in women who reached menopausal age or have had ovariectomy and in men and women subjected to anti-estrogen therapy. Hormone replacement therapy alleviates menopause symptoms; however, it can increase cardiovascular and cancer diseases. In the search for therapeutic alternatives, medicinal plants and specific synthetic and natural molecules with estrogenic effects have attracted widespread attention between the public and the scientific community. Various plants have been used for centuries to alleviate menstrual and menopause symptoms, such as Cranberry, Ginger, Hops, Milk Thistle, Red clover, Salvia officinalis, Soy, Black cohosh, Turnera diffusa, Ushuva, and Vitex. This review aims to highlight current evidence about estrogenic medicinal plants and their pharmacological effects on cognitive deficits induced by estrogen deficiency during menopause and aging.
