Diseño de estrategias de sincronización y estimación de canal para la mejora de comunicaciones en redes inteligentes de energía

La presente tesis contribuye en el desarrollo de estrategias eficientes de sincronización y estimación de canal para sistemas de comunicaciones por la red eléctrica (Power-Line Communications – PLC), que utilizan modulación multiportadora por división de frecuencias ortogonales (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing – OFDM). El principal objetivo es disminuir la complejidad asociada respecto a variantes existentes en la literatura, y a su vez mantener un desempeño competitivo. Para ello, se realiza el diseño de un símbolo piloto construido a partir de pares de secuencias complementarias y se definen algoritmos de sincronización y estimación de canal. Se analizan las técnicas de sincronización gruesa por Autocorrelación (AC) y Correlación Cruzada (CC) en sistemas PLC, y se define un algoritmo de sincronización fina y estimación de canal a partir de la reutilización de la CC. La propuesta se evalúa por simulaciones estudiando el efecto en cada etapa de: el canal PLC, el ruido de fondo coloreado y las diversas fuentes de ruido impulsivo. Adicionalmente, se determina la degradación en el desempeño de cada etapa y se proponen soluciones en un escenario con restricción en la cantidad de subportadoras habilitadas para la transmisión del símbolo piloto, al aplicar una máscara espectral de compatibilidad electromagnética.

SELECTION OF POWER LINE COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOL APPLIED TO A WIND TURBINE UNDER SEVERE CLIMATE CONDITIONS

The main purpose of this paper is to study the preliminary selection of one or more Power Line Communications protocols or standards, to be used in a full duplex communication between a wind turbine and a command center powered by this wind turbine. This situation considers that the wind turbine is located in an isolated area in the Patagonia Austral region, working under severe climate conditions.

Outage Performance of Relay-Assisted Single- and Dual-Stage NOMA Over Power Line Communications

<p>In this paper, we analyze the performance of relay-assisted, single-stage (SS) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and dual-stage (DS) NOMA power line communication systems. Specifically, derive closed form expressions for the outage probabilities of the SS NOMA and DS NOMA schemes. Subsequently, we formulate optimization problems and obtain closed-form solutions for the optimal power allocation coefficients of the SS NOMA and DS NOMA scheme, such that the probability of overall outage is minimized. The accuracy of our analysis and the tightness of the approximations employed are validated through Monte Carlo simulations and numerical techniques. Moreover, we show that the DS NOMA scheme outperforms the SS NOMA scheme, in terms of the overall outage probability.</p>

Modelamiento de una red multiservicio en redes HAN sobre Power Line Communications soportado en Teoría de Colas

Smart Grid es un nuevo concepto que busca articular los sistemas de energía eléctrica y de comunicaciones como un sistema unificado para la optimización del consumo energético en el mundo, en donde una de las tecnologías más aceptadas para la transmisión de información en entornos residenciales es Power Line Coomunicatios (PLC). El objetivo del presente artículo consiste en proponer un modelo soportado en teoría de colas, que permita evaluar el comportamiento del tráfico multiclase una red HAN (Home Area Network) bajo el estándar HomePlug AV (HPAV), el cual es uno de los estándares más importantes de la tecnología PLC. Acorde con los resultados obtenidos, el modelo propuesto permite estimar parámetros tales como tiempos de llegada, tiempos de espera en cola, tiempos de atención, probabilidad de pérdida de paquetes, throughput, número de paquetes perdidos, entre otros valores relacionados con el rendimiento de la red. Aunque el modelo puede ser considerado de gran ayuda para trabajos de investigación relacionados con las comunicaciones sobre PLC, podría ser combinado con otras técnicas de análisis más avanzadas, a fin de obtener resultados más profundos y en contextos más complejos.

Standardization Challenges, Opportunities and Recent Evolutions for the G3-PLC Technology

Considering the intrinsic benefits of power line communications, the long-lasting lifetime of industrial systems and the growth of IoT, PLC technologies will be part of the worldwide industrial landscape for many decades. This paper discusses the history of the G3-PLC technology and current challenges and opportunities identified in real systems. Finally, it introduces recent evolutions within the G3-PLC standard, which bring additional performance and versatility, enhancing the relevance of G3-PLC as a complementary technology to other telecommunication systems in a 5G-driven telecommunication technology landscape.

Power Line Communications for Automotive High Voltage Battery Systems: Channel Modeling and Coexistence Study with Battery Monitoring

As electric vehicles are gaining increasing worldwide interest, advances in driving range and safety become critical. Modern automotive battery management systems (BMS) compete with challenging performance and safety requirements and need to monitor a large amount of battery parameters. In this paper, we propose power line communications (PLC) for high voltage (HV) traction batteries to reduce the BMS wiring effort. By modeling a small-scale battery pack for frequencies up to 300 MHz, we predict the PLC channel transfer characteristics and validate the results using a PLC hardware demonstrator employing a narrowband single-carrier modulation. The results demonstrate that battery PLC is a demanding task due to low access impedances and cell coupling effects, yet transfer characteristics can be improved by optimal impedance matching. PLC for HV BMS not only saves weight and cost, but also improves flexibility in BMS design. PLC enables single-cell monitoring techniques such as online electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) without additional wiring. Online EIS can be used for in-situ state and temperature estimation saving extra sensors. This work unveils possible coexistence issues between PLC and battery monitoring. In particular, we demonstrate that certain PLC data or packet rates have to be avoided not to interfere with EIS measurements.
