Schwannoma is a benign slow-growing tumour that arises from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. The head and neck are common locations of this neoplasm. Intraoral schwannoma is uncommon, with the tongue being the most common site. The tumor can remain asymptomatic for a long period of time. The patient may present with symptoms such as a lump, swallowing difficulty, pain or discomfort, voice change, paresthesia, snoring, bleeding or ulceration. The tumor is usually slow-growing, solitary and well-encapsulated and malignant transformation is very rare. Sudden enlargement of the tumor can occur even from trivial trauma. Only approximately 50% of these tumors have a close relationship with a nerve. Transoral resection is the treatment modality of choice. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry help in confirmation of the diagnosis. Recurrence of the tumor is very rare. This is a case report of a 26-years-old lady with schwannoma in the ventral surface of the tongue successfully treated by transoral resection with the KTP-532 Laser.

Ectopic thyroid is the result of the failure of migration of thyroid along its tract from the floor of the primitive foregut to its final pretracheal position. The incidence of an ectopic lesion in adults is 7%. Most common location is the base of tongue (lingual). Other diverse sites are larynx, trachea, mediastinum, and pericardium. These ectopic tissues may develop the same diseases as the thyroid gland. Here, we report a case of a young female presenting with a foreign body sensation in the throat and on examination revealed a smooth submucosal swelling involving the supraglottis. The entire cyst was excised in toto by KTP 532 laser via an endolaryngeal approach and it was reported as papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. Literature search reported only a few cases of intralaryngeal ectopic thyroid and none with a papillary carcinoma of the larynx. This is the first reported case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid in the larynx.

Over the past 2 decades, the surgical management of inverted papillomas has evolved from extensive radical excision to more conservative surgery. We conducted a study to evaluate the results of our endoscopic approach to tumor excision with the 532-nm potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP-532) laser. Our series included 9 patients with inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses who were treated from January 1998 through December 2003 (72 mo). Only 1 patient (11.1%) experienced a recurrence. The recurrence was detected 12 months after initial treatment, and it was successfully managed via the same endoscopic approach; afterward, the patient was still tumor-free at 2.5 years of follow-up. The good results of this endoscopic approach for lesions limited to the nose and paranasal sinuses can be attributed to excellent visualization with the endoscope and to the bloodless dissection achieved with the KTP-532 laser. We emphasize the need for frequent and long-term follow-up of these patients; a thorough endoscopic examination at every visit is extremely important.

AbstractIntroduction:Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic disease characterised by progressive inability to open the mouth. Various treatment modalities are available for its management, but these have largely been ineffective.Materials and methods:Nine cases of oral submucous fibrosis underwent a release procedure using a KTP-532 laser, from March 2005 to January 2006, within the ENT – head and neck surgery department of a tertiary centre.Results:Pre- and post-operative mouth-opening was compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test, and a significant difference observed (Z = −2.690, p = 0.007). Follow up over an average period of 12 months showed encouraging results. Conclusion:This preliminary study indicated that adequate release of oral submucous fibrosis can be achieved by using a KTP-532 laser release procedure, with minimal morbidity and satisfactory results. These promising results should encourage more widespread use of this technique in the management of this condition.
