Local wave numbers on an n-spheres

We consider Eigen-functions of the Laplace–Beltrami Operator on n-Spheres and characterize them in terms of their local plane wave behavior. We estimate the local spectrum of wave numbers by approximating the Spherical harmonics in the locally flat neighborhood around a point on the Spheres. These local wave numbers are shown to obey an interesting Pythagorean type relation. Based on this relation, we propose a question whether there are integer triples for 2-spheres and their generalization to n-spheres. We apply the local spectrum to define quantities such as phase velocity and group velocity on a sphere and outline the relevance of the analysis for the case fields on de Sitter space.

A generalized skein relation for Khovanov homology and a categorification of the θ-invariant

The Jones polynomial is a famous link invariant that can be defined diagrammatically via a skein relation. Khovanov homology is a richer link invariant that categorifies the Jones polynomial. Using spectral sequences, we obtain a skein-type relation satisfied by the Khovanov homology. Thanks to this relation, we are able to generalize the Khovanov homology in order to obtain a categorification of the θ-invariant, which is itself a generalization of the Jones polynomial.

Thermoelectric Thomson Relations Revisited for a Linear Energy Converter

In this paper we revisit the classic thermocouple model, as a Linear Irreversible Thermodynamic (LIT) energy converter. In this model we have two types of phenomenological coefficients: the first comes from some microscopic models, such as the coefficient associated with the electric conductivity, and the second comes from experimental facts, such as the coefficient associated with the Seebeck power. We show that in the last case, these coefficients can be related to the thermodynamic operation modes of the energy converter. These relations between the experimental phenomenological coefficients and the regimes of performance allow us to propose a first and a second Thomson-type relation, which give us 12 new relations between the Seebeck power, the Peltier heat and the Thomson heat. With this purpose we develop the idea of non-isothermal linear energy converters operated either “directly” (like a heat engine) or “inversely” (like a refrigerator). We analyze the energetics associated to these converters operating under steady states corresponding to different modes of performance, all of them satisfying the fundamental Onsager symmetry relations.

Experience Prospective Life-Tables for the Algerian Retirees

The aim of this paper is to construct prospective life tables adapted to the experience ofAlgerian retirees. Mortality data of the retired population are only available for the age interval[45,95[ and for the period from 2004 to 2013. The use of the conventional prospective mortalitymodels is not supposed to provide robust forecasts given data limitation in terms of eitherexposure to death risk or data length. To improve forecasting robustness, we use the globalpopulation mortality as an external reference. The adjustment of the experience mortality on thereference allows projecting the age-specific death rates calculated based on the experience of theretired population. We propose a generalized version of the Brass-type relation modelincorporating a quadratic effect to perform the adjustment. Results show no significant differencefor men, either retired or not, but reveal a gap of over three years in the remaining life expectancyat age 50 in favor of retired women compared to those of the global population.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF SHATKORA (CITRUS MACROPTERA) IN A TRAY DRYER : EFFECT ON DRYING KINETICS AND PRODUCT QUALITY

Citrus macroptera is a citrus fruit locally known as Shatkora and the fruit of this plant were used for various purposes especially for cooking and also as an odorant in perfume industries.In this research work, Shatkora peel was dried using a laboratory scale tray dryer. The experimental work was conducted at an inlet temperature of 40–60°C and velocities from 0.5–0.9 m/s. Besides, the thickness of the layer was varied between 2– 10 mm. The results demonstrated that the rate of drying was increased accordingly with rise in both air temperature and air velocity however a decreased in layer thickness was noticed. At high air temperature, moisture content of solid achieved equilibrium state within short period of time. On the other hand, moisture diffusivity of Shatkora was evaluated by applying Fick’s second law and the value was varied from 1.78 × 10-8 to 2.83 × 10-7. In addition, activation energy was determined by using Arrhenius type relation and 19.70 kJ/mol was obtained.

Mechanism of {332} Twinning Formation in Cold-Rolled Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr-O Alloy

In this study, the mechanism of {332}<113> twinning formation in cold-rolled Ti-35Nb-2Ta-3Zr-O (wt %) alloy was investigated based on the Taylor-Bishop-Hill theory. The experimental data of crystal orientation in the rolling bite zone was obtained via electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD). The deformation energy of {332}<113> twinning in the propagation stage was calculated using data from EBSD in terms of the Hall-Petch-type relation. The calculation results revealed that the mechanism of {332}<113> twinning formation in β-type Ti-35Nb-2Ta-3Zr-O (wt %) alloy contained two valid models, namely the shear-shuffle model and α″-assisted twinning model. This can help to clarify the mechanism of {332}<113> twinning formation further.

Neural architectures for open-type relation argument extraction

In this work, we focus on the task of open-type relation argument extraction (ORAE): given a corpus, a query entity Q, and a knowledge base relation (e.g., “Q authored notable work with title X”), the model has to extract an argument of non-standard entity type (entities that cannot be extracted by a standard named entity tagger, for example, X: the title of a book or a work of art) from the corpus. We develop and compare a wide range of neural models for this task yielding large improvements over a strong baseline obtained with a neural question answering system. The impact of different sentence encoding architectures and answer extraction methods is systematically compared. An encoder based on gated recurrent units combined with a conditional random fields tagger yields the best results. We release a data set to train and evaluate ORAE, based on Wikidata and obtained by distant supervision.

Sermon Feedback as Facework: Task and Identity Goals in Mentoring Homiletical Theologians

The problem of in-class sermon feedback has vexed the teaching and learning of preaching for some time. For too long, however, the problem has been understood in more or less personal terms insofar as it tries to facilitate an environment where task mastery becomes psychologically feasible for students in a stressful feedback situation. This article argues that the problem of sermon feedback is actually more complex in that it is also tied to privilege, power dynamics, and the multiple identities of the pluralistic classroom and cultural identities in churches. The use of facework theory in communication studies offers an alternative by placing task mastery in relation to the tending to identities in the room. Here the work of Jeff Kerssen-Griep et al. posits a compelling vision for dealing with an analogous face-threatening situation of speech feedback in the college classroom that includes both positive (belonging, competency) and negative (autonomy) facework and thus locates task mastery in relation to tending to identities in a more self-reflective manner. In the process, a more mentoring-type relation between teacher and student is envisioned, one that might even build on Dale Andrews’ notion of apprenticeship in preaching education. The article concludes with homiletical-theological reflections about the relationship of face/Face and promise in reflecting on gospel in the task of teaching and learning preaching.
