An On–Off–On Fluorescence Probe Based on Coumarin for Cu2+, Cysteine, and Histidine Detections

A simple coumarin-based Schiff base (probe L) was successfully developed. It showed strong green fluorescence emission at 527 nm with a 70.3% of fluorescence quantum efficiency (ΦF). However, after the addition of common metal ions, probe L can only combine with Cu2+ ions and displayed significant fluorescence quenching of > 96.2% (ΦF = 2.7%) due to the paramagnetic quenching action from Cu2+. Conversely, by the coordination action of cysteine (Cys) and histidine (His), the quenching fluorescence of the complex (L-Cu2+) between probe L and Cu2+ ions was recovered mostly because the Cys and His can usurp Cu2+ of L-Cu2+ and led to the liberation of probe L. Based on the fluorescence changes of probe L with the actions of Cu2+, Cys, and His, an on–off–on reversible fluorescence probe for sensitive and specific monitoring Cu2+, Cys, and His has been prepared. More importantly, the probe L and L-Cu2+ ensemble can be used, respectively, to test Cu2+ and Cys/His in live cells and human urine samples with great reliability.

Demonstrating managed aquifer recharge as a solution for climate change adaptation: results from Gabardine project and asemwaterNet coordination action in the Algarve region (Portugal)

In the Algarve southern Portugal region, Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) research activities have been developed to provide not only water surplus storage in aquifers during wet years, focusing in the Querença-Silves aquifer (FP6 ASEMWATERNet Coordination Action), but also groundwater quality rehabilitation in the Campina de Faro aquifer (FP6 Gabardine Project). Following MAR research potentialities in southern Portugal, this paper describes the objectives, conceptual demonstration, background and capabilities of one of the selected Circum-Mediterranean pilot sites (in Portugal) that will be researched in the new FP7-ENV-2013-WATER-INNO-DEMO MARSOL project, which started Dec. 1st, 2013. In the Algarve pilot site, several case-study areas will be located in the Querença-Silves aquifer and in the Campina de Faro aquifer.

PAIR MOTOR COORDINATION ACTION IN SPORTSMEN (ON THE EXAMPLE OF BALLROOM DANCING)

Learn a special coordinating pair of motor actions in athletes engaged sport ballroom dancing, depending on gender and sportsmanship. The results suggest that beginners dominated coordination, performed individually, while the highly skilled dancers better developed coordination, carried out in pairs. Athletes average individual coordination disturbed by the emergence of sex differences build movements and coordination pair is not formed. The asymmetry of the coordination abilities manifested in the predominance of the deviation from equilibrium (to the right of men and to the left – in women). In this case, the athletes of low and medium level of skill to maintain the leading element of balance and coordination is the visual analyzer, while the skilled dancers defining role goes to the vestibular apparatus.

A Data Infrastructure for Digital Cultural Heritage: Characteristics, Requirements and Priority Services

The European amount of digitized material is growing very rapidly, as national, regional and European programmes support the digitization processes by museums, libraries, archives, archaeological sites, and audiovisual repositories. The generation of digital cultural heritage is accelerated also by the impulse of Europeana that is fostering the European cultural institutions to produce even more digital content. Moreover digital cultural heritage content are complex and interlinked through many relations. European countries are working for the future, in order to create a data infrastructure devoted to cultural heritage research. Currently, Europe have twin projects (DC-NET and INDICATE) ongoing and a new international coordination action is under preparation to design a validated roadmap for the preservation of digital cultural content. These initiatives are contributing to smooth the way to the Open Science Infrastructure for Digital Cultural Heritage, which is foreseen in 2020.

Numerical Simulation on Framed Anti-Sliding Piles

As a new bracing structure, the framed anti-sliding piless based on spatial framework structure, which have the advantages of less displacement in the top of the piles and large anti-force, are developed as a new retaining structure, and can be used to reduce the piles deformation. However, the previous calculation models of double-row piles ignored the deformation coordination action between linking beams and ring beams, the interaction between piles and beams. Further more the calculation results based on the models are not accurate enough. In this paper, a spatial force model of the framed anti-sliding piles is presented. Taking framed anti-sliding piles as a single-layer multi-span frame affected by piles, beams and soils, the spatial synergic interaction between top ring beam and linking beam, as well as the affection of soil-arch on the frame are analyzed. The horizontal displacement in front of the framed anti-sliding piles and distribution of axial force and moment of piles are studied by Finite element method. The results reflect commendably the stress and distortion character of the framed anti-sliding piles. Finally, some rules about the pile-beam-soil interaction in the pile structure are summarized.
