Effect of Sample Sizes in Fingerprinting Database for Wi-Fi System

Indoor positioning system has been an essential work to substitute the Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS utilizing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) cannot provide an accurate positioning in the indoor due to the multipath effect and shadow fading. Fingerprinting method with Wi-Fi technology is a promising system to solve this issue. However, there are several problems with the fingerprinting method. The fingerprinting database collected has different sample sizes where the previous researcher does not indicate any standard for the sample size to be used. In this paper, the effect of the sample sizes in fingerprinting database for Wi-Fi technology has been discussed deeply. The statistical analyzation for different sample sizes has been analyzed. Furthermore, two methods which are K- Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Deep Neural Network (DNN) are being used to examine the effect of the sample sizes in term of accuracy and distance error. The discussion in this paper will contribute to the better sample size selection depending on the method taken by the user. The result shows that sample sizes are an important metrics in developing the indoor positioning system as it effects the result of the location estimation.

Chromatographic Fingerprinting Based on Column Switching Technology for Quality Evaluation of Tianmeng Oral Liquid

Separation power was limited when the conventional high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprinting method based on a single column was used to analyze very complex traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparations. In this research, a novel HPLC fingerprinting method based on column switching technology by using a single pump was established for evaluating the quality of Tianmeng oral liquid (TMOL). Twelve batches of TMOL samples were used for constructing HPLC fingerprints. Compared with the 16 common peaks in fingerprinting with a single column, 25 common peaks were achieved with two columns connected through a six-way valve. The similarity analysis combined with bootstrap method was applied to determine the similarity threshold, which was 0.992 to distinguish expired samples and unexpired samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) were also applied to classify the TMOL samples, and results revealed that expired and unexpired samples are classified into two categories. The HPLC fingerprinting based on column switching technology with better separation power and higher peak capacity could characterize chemical composition information more comprehensively, providing an effective and alternative method to control and evaluate the quality of TMOL, which would offer a valuable reference for other TCM preparations.

Accurate and Low-Complexity Auto-Fingerprinting for Enhanced Reliability of Indoor Localization Systems

Indoor localization is one of the most important topics in wireless navigation systems. The large number of applications that rely on indoor positioning makes advancements in this field important. Fingerprinting is a popular technique that is widely adopted and induces many important localization approaches. Recently, fingerprinting based on mobile robots has received increasing attention. This work focuses on presenting a simple, cost-effective and accurate auto-fingerprinting method for an indoor localization system based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and using a two-wheeled robot. With this objective, an assessment of the robot’s navigation is performed in order to investigate its displacement errors and elaborate the required corrections. The latter are integrated in our proposed localization system, which is divided into two stages. From there, the auto-fingerprinting method is implemented while modeling the tag-reader link by the Dual One Slope with Second Order propagation Model (DOSSOM) for environmental calibration, within the offline stage. During the online stage, the robot’s position is estimated by applying DOSSOM followed by multilateration. Experimental localization results show that the proposed method provides a positioning error of 1.22 m at the cumulative distribution function of 90%, while operating with only four RFID active tags and an architecture with reduced complexity.
