Planting design is the art of composing plants to create a campus landscape design. The composition may influence the students’ preferences owned by the criteria of planting. This study aims to identify the planting design criteria towards enhancing visual landscape quality in campus environment. The photograph-based method used to collect the landscape planting images and compose it into a questionnaire. This photo-questionnaire design is mostly practiced by academicians in this research field. The question uses five Likertscale format to analyse the preference rating. The descriptive and correlation analysis are used to quantify the mean results and the relationship between the criteria. The finding represents the most influencing factor in landscape planting preference is arrangement with a score 4.34 while texture is less considered with 3.71 rating score. Most of the attributes were significant except for attributes planting with variety of forms, texture intensity and different species arrangement. As a result, this research finding is able to guide designers to sensibly setting the planting design, particularly in the campus environment.

The increased pressures associated with climate change and urbanization processes adversely affect the quality of life of the cities and damage the sustainability of the cities. Sustainability of a city depends on the social, economic and ecological flexible uses that these pressures can tolerate. The examination of these flexible uses within the city brings along the sustainability of the landscape. Landscape serving flexible uses for urban sustainability; All the unconscious elements that make up that landscape, especially the vegetation landscape element, should support the concept of sustainability. Within the scope of the study, it was aimed to determine sustainable design approaches in the fields of planting and to create an evaluation scale accordingly by examining the sustainable planting design approaches in urban scale. An answer was sought to the question of how sustainable the planting activities of Trabzon province are. In the study, 40 studies defined as sustainable landscape areas were examined and 27 sub-parameters were developed under 4 main titles within the framework of these studies. The parameters are examined in the regions represented by the city components that make up the city and it is tried to determine what is necessary for the sustainability of the city

Development of cajuput plantation currently becomes the most important activity in KPH Bojonegoro since it provides an essential contribution to maintain the future viability of company. However, the growth performance of cajuput stand relatively varies one of which is influenced by planting design. This study aims to determine the optimum planting design for supporting cajuput stand development. It was conducted by evaluating two different planting designs that generally used for cajuput establishment, namely C1 (spacing 3 m x 1 m) and C2 (spacing 5 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m). Five parameters were used to evaluate the growth performance and oil production of cajuput stand for each planting design, i.e., survival rate, quadratic mean diameter, basal area, harvesting biomass, and cajuput oil production. Data were collected by field measurement using a sampling plot 50 m x 50 m with six replications for each planting design. Comparison mean of cajuput growth performance between two planting designs were analyzed separately for each parameter using t-test. Results documented there were not a significant different for all parameters, except survival rate. The planting design C2 generated higher survival rate (94.9%) than planting design C1 (64.7%). The planting design C2 was recommended for cajuput development in KPH Bojonegoro. Besides requiring the lower planting density, the use of planting design C2 can optimize land utility with a similar productivity to planting design C1.

Purpose Hospital landscape is not a useless space within hospital buildings anymore. It is considered as a supportive area providing mental and physical peace. However, the planting design of the hospital landscape and the way it should be in order to not disrupt wayfinding performance is neglected. This paper, which is a case study, aims at investigating the effects of planting design in Kerman hospitals’ landscapes on the users’ wayfinding using space syntax techniques. Design/methodology/approach This research focuses on the effects of planting design on the users’ wayfinding in hospitals. In so doing, library research, computer simulation and analysis with the University College London (UCL) Depthmap software, and comparison techniques are used. Based on axial maps, the measures of integration, connectivity and intelligibility are considered for analysing the wayfinding process of individuals. Findings The findings show that planting configurations in the hospital landscape can affect individuals’ wayfinding. Integrated and regular planting design in addition to combining planted areas with the hospital buildings can pave the way for intelligible space and easier wayfinding. Originality/value According to the authors’ knowledge, the current study is the first to use the space syntax techniques in the health-care landscape architecture in terms of planting design and wayfinding. As wayfinding is an important issue in health-care spaces, the study findings can greatly help the health-care building designers and the related organizations to pay attention to the hospital landscape as much as hospital indoors.
