John Roy Lynch

This chapter assesses how, on the sixth day of May 1907, John Roy Lynch took passage on the army transport Logan for a tour of two years of duty in the Philippines and arrived safely at Manila on the thirty-first day of the same month. The transport stopped at only two points between San Francisco and Manila: Honolulu and Guam. They remained several hours at each place but much longer at the former than the latter. While at Honolulu, Lynch visited many points of historical note and interest. The fact was brought to his mind that as a member of Congress, he witnessed the ceremony that took place in the national House of Representatives on the occasion of an official visit paid to the United States by the then king of the Hawaiian Islands. There was no thought at that time of those beautiful and fertile islands becoming a part of the territory of the United States.
