Early Design Space Exploration Framework for Memristive Crossbar Arrays

For memristive crossbar arrays, currently, no high-level design validation and early space exploration tools exist in the literature. Such tools are essential to quickly verify the design functionality as well as compare design alternatives in terms of power and performance. In this work, we propose a VHDL-based framework that enables us to quickly perform behavioral simulation as well as estimate dynamic energy consumption and speed of any large memristive crossbar array. We propose a high-level (VHDL) model of a memristor based on which crossbar architectures can be modeled. The individual memristor model is embedded with power and delay numbers obtained from a detailed memristor model. We demonstrate the framework for MAGIC-style memristive crossbars. We validate the framework against detailed Verilog-A based model on fifteen combinational benchmarks. For the single row model, we obtained 153x simulation speedup over HSPICE, average estimation errors of 6.64% and 0% for dynamic energy consumption and cycle-time, respectively. For the transpose model, we obtained average estimation errors of 5.51% and 10.90% for dynamic energy consumption and cycle-time, respectively. We also extend our framework to support another prominent logic style and validate through a case study. The proposed framework can be easily extended to other emerging technologies.

Determination of Alternative Design of Hornbill Estuary Embankment in Semarang City with Process Hierarchy Analysis Method

Rob’s condition in Semarang is exacerbated by the decrease in the soil level which has a part in the expansion of rob puddles. Therefore, this research is needed to determine the alternative design of the Tenggang River estuary embankment. Researchers collect data with interviews and surveys, then made analysis with Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method which is one of the decision making models in the selection of Embankment Design, the levee design consists of three selected design alternatives. This research focused on decision making based on perceptions of Professionals, Experts, Academics and community leaders.. Where the design of the Embankment consists of 3 alternative designs with priority factors based on analysis and equations of the criteria in the selection of the design, namely, topographic factors (0.133), geology (0.312), hydrology (0.125), Society (0.186), cost (0.113) and benefit (0.131).

Managing Uncertainties in Design Alternatives of EOL Products with Fractional Disassembly Yields

This paper proposes a model of an advanced remanufacturing to order and disassembly to order (ARTODTO) system which evaluates various design alternatives of products to satisfy the demands of retrieved products, components and materials by disassembling these products at the end of their lives. The quality, quantity and variety of end-of-life (EOL) products are uncertain which lead to fractional disassembly yields. Goal programming is used to determine the quantities of EOL products to be acquired in order to meet all the demands of retrieved products, components and materials. A case-example of EOL dryers is presented to demonstrate the steps and implementation of the proposed model.

Interior Design Alternatives of U janevalla Hotel Bedrooms With The Analogy of Jaipong Dance

Buildings which put forward the physical exploration of the exterior architectural forms tend to give such a challenge to the interior treatments, such as U Janevalla hotel in Bandung. Designed by Budi Pradono Architects, the architecture of the hotel is inspired by the analogy of Jaipong Dance and is translated into tilted facades and forms that create an expression of movement of each story of the building. However, the building is lacking in detailed execution in the interior space where the dancing effect is hardly perceived from the inner space. Therefore, this paper proposes interior design alternatives which focus on the bedrooms as the main facility offered to the guests, mainly in the furniture design and interior details. Through examining the analogy of Jaipong Dance, it is found that the tilted shapes and forms of the architecture can be brought into the interior through modification of the forms, additional interior details, and filling the spatial leftovers.

Penerapan Metode Design Thinking Pada Model Perancangan Animasi Periklanan Digital Pencegahan Covid-19

Abstrak: Sejak awal ditemukannya wabah COVID-19 di Indonesia, pemerintah telah melakukan berbagai upaya dalam rangka mencegah penyebaran COVID-19 di antaranya membuat beberapa kebijakan baru dengan upaya preventif dan upaya reaktif. Salah satu upaya preventif yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah adalah dengan menggunakan imbauan yang berisi promosi pencegahan penyebaran COVID-19. Pemerintah dibantu oleh kalangan masyarakat sering memberikan imbauan kampanye pencegahan penyebaran COVID-19, salah satunya adalah penggunaan media animasi digital. Media ini yang banyak ditemukan dalam situs-situs umum sehingga mempermudah penyampaian kepada masyarakat yang meluas. Perancangan yang digunakan menggunakan metode design thinking yang terdiri dari tahapan empathize, define, ideate, prototype dan test. Penggunaan metode design thinking diharapkan dapat digunakan secara efektif untuk merancang animasi digital sehingga promosi pencegahan penyebaran virus COVID-19 dapat menjadi lebih terstruktur dan sistematis. Hasil dari perancangan ini memberikan rekomendasi berupa model animasi digital promosi sebagai layanan masyarakat untuk pencegahan virus Covid-19 dengan menggunakan aplikasi Google Web Designer. Menggunakan dasar tersebut dapat disimpulkan metode design thinking memungkinkan desainer dalam pengumpulan berbagai informasi mengenai permasalahan yang ada sehingga mampu mengembangkan gagasan serta membuat alternatif desain dalam berinovasi. Kata Kunci: perancangan; animasi digital; COVID-19; design thinking, Abstract: When COVID-19 pandemics was first found in Indonesia, the government has taken several measures to contain further spread of COVID-19 pandemic, including by taking some preventive and reactive measures. One of the preventive measures taken by the government is to appeal the public by promoting preventive approach to contain the spread of COVID-19. The government in collaboration with the community has often given campaign appeals to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to use digital animation advertisements. This Media are often found in public sites can facilitate delivery to the wider community. This design uses design thinking method which consists of empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test. The use of the design thinking method is expected to be used effectively to design digital animations so that the promotion of preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus can be more structured and systematic. The result of this design provide recommendations in the form of digital animation model as a public service for the prevention of the Covid-19 virus by using the Google Web Designer application.With this basis, they can acquire a design thinking method that allows designers to gather various information about existing problems so that they are able to develop ideas and create design alternatives in terms of design. PRODUÇÃO DE MÓVEIS RÚSTICOS COM MADEIRA RESIDUAL DA FLORESTA AMAZÔNICA

A exploração madeireira e as conversões de áreas de florestas para uso alternativo do solo na região Amazônica, em especial no estado do Amapá, resultam em grandes quantidades de madeira residual que em geral são abandonadas em campo. Essa problemática da geração de resíduos florestais e principalmente do desperdício e da falta de alternativas para o seu uso apropriado, resultou nesta proposta de pesquisa que teve como objetivo a produção de móveis rústicos artesanais como uma alternativa para o uso da madeira residual da floresta Amazônica. Foram coletados resíduos de madeira deixados no campo após a colheita de floresta Amazônica manejada, destinando-os à fabricação de mobiliário rústico, obtendo como resultado final os seguintes protótipos: banco peça de tora única, balcão para barzinho, aparador de madeira, pia de madeira, mesinha de centro com tampo de madeira, mesinha de centro com tampo de vidro. Foi testada a viabilidade técnica para fabricação artesanal das peças de mobiliário utilizando máquinas e ferramentas portáteis. Os resíduos de madeira se mostraram excelente fonte de matéria-prima para movelaria rústica possibilitando múltiplas alternativas de designs, apesar de certas dificuldades terem sido evidenciadas no decorrer do processo como: peso, dureza, orientação da grã da madeira, entre outras que, no entanto, não impossibilitaram a produção dos móveis. O uso da madeira residual para fabricação de móveis rústicos pode se constituir num novo e empreendedor negócio para a região Amazônica, contribuindo para a geração de renda local. Verificou-se que o método empregado proporcionou a produção de móveis originais, o que agrega valor à sua comercialização. Palavras-chave: trabalho artesanal; empreendedorismo; projeto. Rustic furniture production with wood residues from the Amazon forest ABSTRACT: Harvesting and conversions of forest areas to alternative land use in the Amazon region, especially in the Amapá state, result in large amounts of wood residues that are generally abandoned. This problem about the forest residues and mainly of its loss and the lack of alternatives for its proper use, resulted in this research proposal that aimed to produce handcrafted rustic furniture as an alternative to the use of wood residues from the Amazon forest. Wood residues left in the field after harvesting the managed Amazon forest were collected and destined for the manufacture of rustic furniture, obtaining the following prototypes as a final result: log bench, bar counter, wood dresser, wood sink, coffee table with wood top, coffee table with glass top. The technical feasibility of handcrafting furniture pieces using portable machines and tools were tested. Wood residues proved to be an excellent source of raw material for rustic furniture, enabling multiple design alternatives, although certain difficulties were evidenced during the process such as: weight, hardness, wood grain orientation, among others that did not prevent the furniture production. The use of wood residues to rustic furniture manufacture can constitute a new and entrepreneurial business for the Amazon region, contributing to the generation of local income. It was found that the method used provided the production of original furniture, which adds value to its marketing. Keywords: artisan work; entrepreneurship; design.

Connectivity in Superblock Street Networks: Measuring Distance, Directness, and the Diversity of Pedestrian Paths

Superblocks are a common urban development strategy used in cities of the United Arab Emirates and the larger Gulf region. In planning new neighborhoods, these cities utilize superblocks structured using various street network designs. Despite their key role in shaping its main transportation network, the connectivity of these designs has not been frequently studied. This paper addresses this research gap, analyzing ten different superblock designs, and focusing on their internal and external connectivity properties. Internal connectivity is studied by measuring connections between plots in the superblocks. External connectivity is measured from plots to the superblocks’ corners, the points from which to access surrounding areas. Connectivity is measured in terms of distance, directness, and route diversity. The results show that strong similarities exist across the studied designs, particularly in terms of travel distances. Differences are found in terms of efficiency and, most notably, route diversity. Findings are discussed in relation to walkability, the costs associated to each design given network length variations, and the importance of creating rich and diverse street systems that support open-ended exploration. While based on a sample of ideal cases and in need of validation with built cases, this paper outlines a method by which to evaluate and compare superblock network design alternatives.

INTRODUCING OPERATIONAL INFORMATION INTO EARLY STAGE SHIP DESIGN USING QUEUEING NETWORKS

During the early stages of ship design a set of requirements needs to be identified, accounting for financial and technical feasibility, and operational effectiveness. This process of requirements elucidation creates a need for information regarding various design alternatives and their effect on the feasibility and effectiveness of the design requirements. When one considers internal layout and process driven ships, ships where the arrangement of spaces has a strong influence on the effectiveness of the ship's operational processes, a gap in available methods has been identified. This paper proposes a method based on queueing networks that allows a naval architect to study the effects of different arrangements on the execution of various sets of operational processes. Using this model a better understanding of the interaction between the ship's arrangement and its operational processes can be obtained. This understanding can improve the requirements elucidation process and can lead to the development of better design requirements.

SpaceSheets: Design Experimentation in Latent Space

<p>Computational design tools enable designers to construct and manipulate representations of design artifacts to arrive at a solution. However, the constraints of deterministic programming impose a high cost of tedium and inflexibility to exploring design alternatives through these models. They require designers to express high-level design intent through sequences of low-level operations. Generative neural networks are able to construct generalised models of images which capture principles implicit within them. The latent spaces of these models can be sampled to create novel images and to perform semantic operations. This presents the opportunity for more meaningful and efficient design experimentation, where designers are able to express design intent through principles inferred by the model, instead of sequences of low-level operations. A general purpose software prototype has been devised and evaluated to investigate the affordances of such a tool. This software — termed a SpaceSheet — takes the form of a spreadsheet interface and enables users to explore a latent space of fonts. User testing and observation of task-based evaluations revealed that the tool enabled a novel top-down approach to design experimentation. This mode of working required a new set of skills for users to derive meaning and navigate within the model effectively. Despite this, a rudimentary understanding was observed to be sufficient to enable designers and non-designers alike to explore design possibilities more effectively.</p>
