The protist community mirrors seasonality and mesoscale hydrographic features in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea

Protists represent the majority of the eukaryotic diversity in the oceans. They have different functions in the marine food web, playing essential roles in the biogeochemical cycles. Meanwhile the available data is rich in horizontal and temporal coverage, little is known on their vertical structuring, particularly below the photic zone. The present study applies DNA metabarcoding to samples collected over three years in conjunction with the BATS time-series to assess marine protist communities in the epipelagic and mesopelagic zones. The protist community showed a dynamic seasonality in the epipelagic, responding to hydrographic yearly cycles. Mixotrophic lineages dominated throughout the year; however, autotrophs bloomed during the rapid transition between the winter mixing and the stratified summer, and heterotrophs had their peak at the end of summer, when the base of the thermocline reaches its deepest depth. Below the photic zone, the community, dominated by Rhizaria, is depth-stratified and relatively constant throughout the year, mirroring local hydrographic and biological features such as the oxygen minimum zone. The results suggest a dynamic partitioning of the water column, where the niche vertical position for each community changes throughout the year, likely depending on nutrient availability, the mixed layer depth, and other hydrographic features. Finally, the protist community closely followed mesoscale events (eddies), where the communities mirrored the hydrographic uplift, raising the deeper communities for hundreds of meters, and compressing the communities above.

The Gulf Stream and the Californian Current as Factors Affecting the Behavior and Health of Americans

Due to the existence of the Earth's geomagnetic field, Lorentz’s forces constantly act on all sea currents. These forces distribute the charges of sea currents in both vertical and horizontal directions. In particular, this distribution manifests itself in the electric polarization of sea currents in directions perpendicular to them. So, earlier it was shown that the same Lorentz forces cause negative electrization of the Sargasso Sea. It is also shown here that the positive electrization of the western edge of the Gulf Stream and, consequently, the eastern coast of the United States is also caused by the Lorentz force arising from the interaction of this sea current with the vertical component of the geomagnetic field. It is also shown here that the positive electrization of east edge of California Current together with west coast of USA is also caused due to the similar reasons. All this allows us to conclude that an increased concentration of positive air ions is constantly retained in the air both in the east and in the west of the United States. This situation has caused the need for an analysis of how the predominantly positive electrization of the air affects both human health and their physical and mental activity. The results of this analysis are presented here. It is also shown that these results can be useful for residents of some other countries.

Caryl Phillips’s Rewriting of the Canonical Romance as a Genre

The paper considers Phillips’s rewriting of the canonical nineteenth-century romances in three of his novels – A State of Independence (1986), The Lost Child (2015), and A View of the Empire at Sunset (2018). The three texts resettle the romance genre through the postcolonial concept of ‘home’. In A State of Independence, Phillips rearranges the role of one of Jane Austen’s most orthodox characters, the landowner Sir Thomas Bertram of Mansfield Park (1814), by transposing the Austenian character’s features to his protagonist Bertram Francis, a Caribbean man who comes back to his ancestral homeland after twenty years in Britain. In The Lost Child, chronicling literary-historical events in the present tense by transferring the life of the Brontë family into the protagonists of Wuthering Heights (1847) is for the author one way of calling into question the real sense of literature. It is for this reason that Phillips constructs a cyclic narration around the figure of Branwell Brontë, fictionalised by his sister Emily in the romance protagonist Heathcliff, and mirrored in The Lost Child in the character of Tommy Wilson. In A View of the Empire at Sunset, Phillips definitely overturns the colonial and genre categories by reassessing the in-between life of the Dominican-born writer Jean Rhys through her personal return journey to Dominica: as a result, the author of Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) (an intense rewriting of Jane Eyre) becomes a fictional character, and the literary events of her life sum up the vicissitudes both of the two ‘Bertrams’ – of Mansfield Park and A State of Independence – and the protagonists of Wuthering Heights and The Lost Child.

El presente artículo trata de algunos usos de la intertextualidad entre el cine y la literatura. I Walked with a Zombie (1943) es la segunda de las nueve películas producidas por Val Lewton que dieron forma al género de terror y tuvieron una influencia duradera en el lenguaje cinematográfico. La película, que replantea la clásica novela victoriana Jane Eyre en un escenario caribeño, esboza las fallas del proceso colonizador europeo mucho antes de la llegada de los estudios postcoloniales. La novela parcialmente autobiográfica de Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), reformula Jane Eyre desde una perspectiva feminista y poscolonial por medio del punto de vista de «la loca del ático». En la novela El beso de la mujer araña (de Manuel Puig), el cine y las películas, incluida I Walked with a Zombie, constituyen el medio intertextual para la creación del personaje literario y la figura de un amor que no tiene nombre.

Female Island: Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea

Two leading articles of feminist hue – “The Laugh of the Medusa” (1976) and “Feminist Criticism in the Wilderness” (1981) – by two seminal figures, Hélène Cixous and Elaine Showalter respectively, grant a new look at Jean Rhys’s novel Wide Sargasso Sea. Two main themes that come to the fore from these two articles with reference to Rhys’s novel are the male-dominated female zone and the importance of female writing for women. Both critics mention the strong hold of patriarchy on women, which is quite obvious in Antoinette’s condition in Rhys’s novel. Next, both Cixous and Showalter claim that while men see the female domain as a dark space, women should stick to their female domain and express themselves through writing. And this is what Rhys does in her novel; she gives a voice to the mad woman in the attic, Antoinette, who has been put there and tagged mad by her husband. By exploring the similarities between feminist criticism in Cixous’s and Showalter’s articles and Rhys’s novel, this study aims to show that although Wide Sargasso Sea is a revolutionary novel with its ability to give the mad woman back her individuality, it is not strong enough to create a world where this woman can experience her individuality.

Natural history of neustonic animals in the Sargasso Sea: reproduction, predation, and behavior of Glaucus atlanticus, Velella velella, and Janthina spp.

The Sargasso Sea, located in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre, is one of the most well-known ocean surface ecosystems on the planet. It supports numerous ecologically and economically important fish species, juvenile turtles, and endemic species. However, in addition to the floating algae Sargassum from which the sea derives its name, numerous floating neustonic animals also live at the surface, yet their basic natural history remains poorly known. Without the basic knowledge of these species, understanding ecosystem function, food webs, and pollution impacts is impossible. This is especially problematic because pollutants like plastic are now increasing at the surface at alarming rates. This study examines the diet, reproduction, and behavior of four neustonic animal species: Velella velella, Janthina janthina, Janthina pallida, and Glaucus atlanticus. All mollusk species showed unique predatory preferences and behaviors, indicating possible methods of niche partitioning among these species. For example, Glaucus atlanticus showed an equal preference for all prey but preyed primarily by crawling below to consume the underside of prey, while large J. janthina often preyed more on the margin of V. velella and P. physalis, in contrast, J. pallida only preyed on V. velella. Of the four species observed, two reproduced in the lab (G. atlanticus and V. velella), and the embryo cases of J. pallida were examined from both collected snails and discarded bubble rafts. High fecundity rates were observed in all species, which may be an adaptation to high loss rates. This study lays the groundwork for future research on neustonic animals in the Sargasso Sea.

Distribution and diel vertical migration of mesopelagic fishes in the Southern Sargasso Sea — observations through hydroacoustics and stratified catches

Vertical distribution patterns and relative abundance of mesopelagic fish species and other major taxonomic groups were investigated through vertically stratified trawl sampling and hydroacoustic analyses along the subtropical convergence zone from 52° W to 70° W in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea. Persistent stationary layers and several migrating components of different scattering characteristics were detected. The results reveal varying vertical migration patterns, including different times of onset of diel vertical migration in different depths and a migrant pathway emerging daily from the lower deep scattering layer (DSL) at dusk and migrating through the upper DSL without affecting its composition. Fish species identification was made based on morphological characteristics and confirmed by genetic barcoding analyses of subsamples. In total, 5022 fish specimens from 27 families, 62 genera and 70 species were caught. In terms of relative abundance (A) and biomass (M), catches were dominated by species of the families Myctophidae (A=59.1%, M=47.4% of total fish catch) and Melamphaidae (A=22.5%, M=17.1%). Myctophidae and Stomiidae were the most species-rich families with 31 and 12 species, respectively. Catches at the two easternmost stations were dominated by Scopelogadus mizolepis and Nannobrachium cuprarium, while Bolinichthys photothorax and Ceratoscopelus warmingii were the most abundant species in catches from the two westernmost stations. This study provides insights into distribution and vertical migration behaviour of mesopelagic fish in the Sargasso Sea and adds to our understanding of the mesopelagic community in this large oceanic area.

Outlining the causes and effects of Algae bloom at Ghana’s West Coast

The first incidence of algal bloom within Ghana’s west coast was recorded in 1993, however many years down the line, the growth is still persistent in her territorial waters. A lasting solution is yet to be found. This has therefore led to several social, economic and environmental problems in the affected regions. The study outlined the possible causes and effects of algal bloom within Ghana’s West Coast. The perception of the local people with regards to the causes was also investigated. The method used was by direct observation and use of questionnaires following a case study approach in the Half Asini District. This was to address the pertinent question of what the people think is the cause of the bloom. The study found that the growth of Algae was alarming, with a newer breed having a much negative consequence on the economic livelihood of the people and environment. It was also found that current studies on the issue were minimal— with less than necessary attention being given by stakeholder. However, scientific investigations were underway, though a preliminary report suggested it is a migration of Sargasso Sea species. Recommendations included the need for consented government efforts to investigate, device a control measure to curtail its spread, and continuous public education as a control measure was recommended as well.
