The initiative, led by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), resulted in the publication of a United Nations mine action standard, a GICHD best practice guide and on-the-ground assessments of underwater explosive ordnance sites in a dozen countries throughout the globe. This paper summarizes the GICHD efforts and the diverse challenges with underwater explosive ordnance in order to provide a broad understanding of the nature of the problems and potential solutions.
