Development of Wrist Interface Based on Fully Actuated Coaxial Spherical Parallel Mechanism for Force Interaction

To develop a wrist robotic exoskeleton-type interface (REI) for force interaction, it should have a suitable range of motion similar to human wrist activities of daily living, large torque output performance, and low moving parts inertia for dynamic motion response to cover the human behavior frequency. In this paper, a wrist REI based on a fully actuated coaxial spherical parallel mechanism (CSPM) is proposed to satisfy the aforementioned features. The fully actuated CSPM-based wrist REI (FC-WREI) has the characteristics of pure rotation similar to the human wrist, high torque output by parallel torque synthesis, and low moving parts inertia due to the base arrangement of the actuators. Due to the mechanical advantages and design optimization, the FC-WREI maximally provides torque as much as 56.49–130.43% of the maximum isometric torque of the human wrist, while providing a consistent range of motion to the human wrist without interference problem. Moreover, it is confirmed that the inertia of the FC-WREI is up to 5.35 times lower than similar devices. These advantages of the FC-WREI mean that the device is applicable to various fields of REIs for force interaction.

Topological Analysis of a Novel Compact Omnidirectional Three-Legged Robot with Parallel Hip Structures Regarding Locomotion Capability and Load Distribution

In this study, a novel design for a compact, lightweight, agile, omnidirectional three-legged robot involving legs with four degrees of freedom, utilizing an spherical parallel mechanism with an additional non-redundant central support joint for the robot hip structure is proposed. The general design and conceptual ideas for the robot are presented, targeting a close match of the well-known SLIP-model. CAD models, 3d-printed prototypes, and proof-of-concept multi-body simulations are shown, investigating the feasibility to employ a geometrically dense spherical parallel manipulator with completely spherically shaped shell-type parts for the highly force-loaded application in the legged robot hip mechanism. Furthermore, in this study, an analytic expression is derived, yielding the calculation of stress forces acting inside the linkage structures, by directly constructing the manipulator hip Jacobian inside the force domain.

On the Study of Configuration and Kinematics of a 3-DOF Generalized Spherical Parallel Mechanism for Ankle Rehabilitation

The kinematic equivalent model of the existing ankle rehabilitation robot is inconsistent with the anatomy structure of the human ankle, which will influence the rehabilitation effect . Therefore, this paper equivalent the human ankle to the UR model and proposes a novel 3-DOF generalized spherical parallel mechanism for ankle rehabilitation. The parallel mechanism has two spherical centers corresponding to the rotation center of the tibiotalar joint and subtalar joint. Via screw theory, the mobility of the parallel mechanism is analyzed, which meets the requirement of the human ankle. Its inverse kinematics is presented and singularities are identified based on the Jacobian matrix. The workspaces of the parallel mechanism are obtained by the search method and compared with the motion range of the human ankle, which shows that the parallel mechanism could meet the motion demand of ankle rehabilitation. In addition, on the basis of the motion/force transmissibility, the performance atlases are plotted in the parameter optimal design space and the optimum region is obtained according to the demands of practical application. The results show that the parallel mechanism can meet the motion requirements of ankle rehabilitation and have excellent kinematic performance in its rehabilitation range, which provides a theoretical basis for the prototype design and experiment verification.

Torque Reduction of a Reconfigurable Spherical Parallel Mechanism Based on Craniotomy Experimental Data

This paper deals with a robotic manipulator dedicated to craniotomy with a remote center of motion based on a Spherical Parallel Manipulator (SPM) architecture. The SPM is proposed to handle the drilling tool through the requested craniotomy Degrees of Freedom (DoF) with two rotations. The proposed architecture allows one degree of redundancy according to the total DoF. Thus, a first contribution of this work focuses on the experimental analysis of craniotomy surgery tasks. Secondly, its behavior is improved, taking advantage of the redundancy of the SPM using the spinning motion as a reconfiguration variable. The spinning angle modulation allows the reconfigurable manipulator to minimize its motor torques. A series of motion capture and force experimentations is performed for the analysis of the kinematic and force interaction characterizing Burr hole craniotomy procedures. Experimentations were carried out by a neurosurgeon on a human cadaver, ensuring highly realistic conditions.

Motion Characteristics Analysis of a Novel Spherical Two-degree-of-freedom Parallel Mechanism

In this paper, a novel two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) spherical parallel mechanism(SPM) with symmetrical structure is proposed and analyzed. First, the models of forward kinematics and inverse kinematics are established based on D-H parameters, and the Jacobian matrix of the mechanism is obtained and verified. Second, the workspace of the mechanism is obtained according to inverse kinematics and link interference conditions. Next, rotational characteristics analysis shows that the end effector can achieve continuous rotation about an axis located in the mid-plane and passing through the rotation center of the mechanism. Moreover, the rotational characteristics of the mechanism are proved and motion planning is carried out. A numerical example is given to verify the kinematics analysis and motion planning. Finally, some variant mechanisms can be synthesized. This work lays the foundation for the motion control and practical application of this 2DOF SPM.
