Fresh-cut fruits and vegetables have longer shelf lives when appropriate packaging materials having proper permeability properties are used. For this reason eight different packaging materials having different permeability properties were used and it was aimed to determine the appropriate packaging material and analytical and mathematical shelf lives of fresh cut red cabbage. Head space analysis, microbiological and sensorial analysis together with pH, weight loss (%) and colour analysis were performed. As a result of the study, it was determined that low density polyethylene (LDPE) film having 20 µm of thickness and 12276 cc/m2-day of oxygen permeability was determined as the most suitable packaging material for packaging of fresh-cut red cabbage. Mathematical microbiological shelf life was determined as 12.33 days and both analytical microbiological and sensorial shelf lives were determined as 12 days. It was shown that Gompertz equation can be used in determination of microbiological shelf life of fresh-cut red cabbage since the analytical and mathematical shelf life results fit to each other. Also, the equation that can be used in calculation of shelf life of fresh-cut red cabbage when packaged with AYPE film having 12276 cc/m2-day oxygen permeability was determined as log(Nt/N0) = 6,83 × exp{-exp{[(0,80*e)(6,83-t)/6,83]+1}}.

The readily available ex-chiral-pool building block (−)-isosteviol was combined with the C 3-symmetric platforms hexahydroxytriphenylene and hexaaminotriptycene providing large and rigid molecular architectures. Because of the persistent cavities these scaffolds are very potent supramolecular affinity materials for head space analysis by quartz crystal microbalances. The scaffolds serve in particular as templates for tracing air-borne arenes at low concentration. The affinities of the synthesized materials towards different air-borne arenes were determined by 200 MHz quartz crystal microbalances.

Volatile constituents of Elsholtzia fruiticosa (D. Don) Rehder were studied by two different extraction techniques, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and hydrodistillation (HD), and the results were compared with head space analysis (HS). Thirty-five constituents were identified in both the SFE and HD oils and fourteen in the HS, accounting for 94.2%, 97.7% and 96.9% of the total identifications, respectively. A distinctive feature of the results was the very high content of non-terpenes (59.8%) in the HS, the high content of oxygenated monoterpenes (41.1%) in the HD oil and the high content of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (21.8%) in the SFE oil. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were represented in HS (13.6%), HD (19.4%) and SFE (4.3%). In SFE sesquiterpene hydrocarbons formed 21.8% of the total, as compared to 6.6% in the HD and 1.1% in the HS Oxygenated sesquiterpenes represented 3.0% in SFE, 0.8% in HD and were absent in HS. Diterpenes were only present in the SFE oil (3.4%). Non-terpenes were represented by 24.5% in the SFE oil and 29.8% in the HD oil.
