A new class of problems in free surface hydrodynamics appeared after the groundbreaking discovery by Yves Couder and Emmanuel Fort. A bouncing droplet in association with Faraday surface waves gives rise to new nonlinear dynamics, in analogy with the pilot-wave proposed by de Broglie. The droplet and the underlying vibrating bath are of silicon oil. A weakly viscous potential theory model should be used. Numerical simulations are presented with one and two bouncing droplets oscillating while confined to their cavities. These oscillators are implicitly coupled by the underlying surface wave field. In certain regimes, the oscillators can spontaneously synchronize, even when placed at a distance. Cavity parameters are varied in order to highlight the sensitive wave-mediated coupling. The present nonlinear wave-mediated oscillator synchronization is more general than that displayed by the celebrated Kuramoto model and therefore of general interest.

The primary questions motivating this report are: Are there ways to increase coherence and delocalization of excitation among many molecules at moderate electronic coupling strength? Coherent delocalization of excitation in disordered molecular systems is studied using numerical calculations. The results are relevant to molecular excitons, polaritons, and make connections to classical phase oscillator synchronization. In particular, it is hypothesized that it is not only the magnitude of electronic coupling relative to the standard deviation of energetic disorder that decides the limits of coherence, but that the structure of the Hamiltonian—connections between sites (or molecules) made by electronic coupling—is a significant design parameter. Inspired by synchronization phenomena in analogous systems of phase oscillators, some properties of graphs that define the structure of different Hamiltonian matrices are explored. The report focuses on eigenvalues and ensemble density matrices of various structured, random matrices. Some reasons for the special delocalization properties and robustness of polaritons in the single-excitation subspace (the star graph) are discussed. The key result of this report is that, for some classes of Hamiltonian matrix structure, coherent delocalization is not easily defeated by energy disorder, even when the electronic coupling is small compared to disorder.

Abstract A new method is introduced for the simulation of multiple impacts in granular media using the Kuwabara-Kono (KK) contact model, a nonsmooth (not Lipschitz continuous) extension of Hertz contact that accounts for viscoelastic damping. We use the technique of modified equations to construct time-discretizations of the nondissipative Hertz law matching numerical dissipation with KK dissipation at different consistency orders. This allows us to simulate dissipative impacts with good accuracy without including the nonsmooth KK viscoelastic component in the contact force. This tailored numerical dissipation is developed in a general framework, for Newtonian dynamical systems subject to dissipative forces proportional to the time-derivative of conservative forces. Numerical tests are performed for the simulation of impacts in Newton’s cradle and on alignments of alternating large and small balls. Resulting wave phenomena (oscillator synchronization, propagation of dissipative solitary waves, oscillatory tails) are accurately captured by implicit schemes with tailored numerical dissipation, even for relatively large time steps.
