Role of water bodies in the structure of open public spaces of cities (Chermyanka river)

Most of the cities standing on rivers are currently faced with the problem of the formation of near-water depressed spaces. The paper presents the results of a study of the depressive territory of the Chermyanka River section (Moscow), in which the authors took part. Based on the results of the reconnaissance survey and sociological research, the main problems of the study area were identified. Based on the analysis of successful foreign and domestic projects for the revitalization of depressed spaces, ways of solving these problems are proposed. The paper describes an option of the reorganization of the depressed territory under consideration, developed by the authors. The choice of zoning the territory of the river into green and open public spaces has been substantiated. The functional content of public spaces and communications is described, allowing them to be combined into an integral recreational complex. The new public space will allow the Bibirevo and Otradnoye districts to be linked by a pedestrian route and will provide free movement between the banks of the river.

Alfnoor: Assessing the Information Content of Ariel's Low-resolution Spectra with Planetary Population Studies

The Ariel Space Telescope will provide a large and diverse sample of exoplanet spectra, performing spectroscopic observations of about 1000 exoplanets in the wavelength range 0.5–7.8 μm. In this paper, we investigate the information content of Ariel’s Reconnaissance Survey low-resolution transmission spectra. Among the goals of the Ariel Reconnaissance Survey is also to identify planets without molecular features in their atmosphere. In this work, (1) we present a strategy that will allow us to select candidate planets to be reobserved in Ariel’s higher-resolution tier, (2) we propose a metric to preliminary classify exoplanets by their atmospheric composition without performing an atmospheric retrieval, and (3) we introduce the possibility to find other methods to better exploit the data scientific content.

Subjective Well-Being in Healthcare Professionals in Colombia: On the Constitution of Subjectivity and the Ethics of Care in Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The purpose of this work is to reveal how subjective well-being has been generated in a group of professionals in the healthcare field in Colombia, who carried out postgraduate studies at the time of the pandemic caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in a synchronous and remote learning course facilitated by employing digital technologies. Two methods were assumed, one was qualitative, taking into account some elements of narrative research and discourse analysis, and the other was quantitative, through a rapid reconnaissance survey. The research assumes the constitution of subjectivity from memory and everyday life, as well as the ethics of care concerning caring for oneself and others, as categories that were (re)signified with the narratives—and as notions that make up a theoretical corpus—to understand subjective well-being.

Two earthquake events on the Pamsoa Segment of the Matano Fault, Sulawesi

Sulawesi Island crossed by the importance active faults of the Palukoro Fault in the western part and the Matano Fault in the eastern part. Pamsoa Segment, the fourth of six-segments of the Matano Fault (from west to east), located near importance Sorowako mining city, Sulawesi. Pamsoa segment has a 38 km length, oriented N295°E, and has an obvious 475 m sinistral river offset. A reconnaissance survey conduct in this segment along the fault crosses the mining dirt road. Two fault rupture existed on the Holocene river terrace. Accelerated Mass Spectrometry (AMS) carbon dating shows age about 5218 BP and 4446 BP on the soil samples. Nice slicken-side on red soil shows as a fresh fault rupture. This rupture shows a possible two earthquake event on the Pamsoa Segment. The Matano fault has potency similar to the 2018 Palu earthquake. If the fault has similar multi fault rupture earthquake characteristic, the Matano Fault is also classified as a Magnitude 7+ class earthquake. Further research is needed to get precise earthquake geology parameters and ideal charcoal samples.

Characterization, classification and suitability evaluation of soils under sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) cultivation at the Sugar Research Farm, University of Ilorin, Nigeria

A reconnaissance survey conducted at the University of Ilorin Sugar Research Farm (USRF) revealed four dominant soils at Site 1 (USRF1) and one at Site 2 (USRF2). The soils were characterized and classified according to both the Soil Taxonomy (ST) and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB). Also, the suitability of the soils for sugarcane cultivation was evaluated using the limitation approach. While the USRF1 soils were reddish, the USRF2 soil was greyish due to poor drainage. The USRF1 soils were loamy sand with the AB-horizons of pedons II and III being gravelly. Pedon V had sandy loam surface, sandy clay loam subsurface and clay loam subsoil. The USRF1 soils were moderately acid while the USRF2 soil was slightly acid to slightly alkaline. Exchangeable calcium (Ca2+) content of the USRF2 soil which averaged 4.00 cmolc kg–1 was 2-3 times higher than that of the USRF1 soils. The USRF2 soil also contained higher Mg2+, K+ and Na+, 2-3 folds higher effective cation exchange capacity and > 10 folds higher soil organic carbon (with mean of 11.60 g kg–1) and total nitrogen (mean of 0.94 g kg–1). Under ST, pedons I and IV classified as Typic Haplustepts, II and III as Lithic Haplustepts and V as a Kanhaplic Haplustalf. Under WRB, pedons I and IV classified as Eutric Regosols (arenic), II and III as Endo-pisoplinthic Cambisols (arenic) and V as a Gleyic Lixisol (loamic). Pedon V was highly suitable (85.25%), I and IV moderately suitable (64.53%), II marginally suitable (47.40%) and III unsuitable (35.62%) for sugarcane cultivation.

Cretaceous Geology, Age-Differences and Economic Geology of Gidan Alfarma Environ, Northwestern Nigeria

In this present study, the geology and economic aspect of lithological units of Sokoto Basin, sheet 4 South West Sokoto, part of Nigerian Sedimentary Basins were studied. It is bounded by latitudes N 13° 36' 30"- N 13° 40' 45" and longitudes E 05° 38' 00"- E 05° 40' 44"to gently undulating plain which was mapped on the scale of 1:25,000. The methodology adopted was mainly primary data which involved reconnaissance survey and actual or full field survey. The economic deposits include clays/ shale, lateritic ironstones, limestone, phosphate and gypsum, which are mined by the local artisanal miners.

The Battle of Lepanto Search and Survey Mission (1971–1972) by Throckmorton, Edgerton and Yalouris: Following Their Traces Half a Century Later Using Marine Geophysics

A series of marine remote sensing and ground-truth surveys were carried out at NW Gulf of Patras (W. Greece). The same area was surveyed in 1971 by Throckmorton, Edgerton and Yalouris, who are among the pioneers in the application of remote sensing techniques to underwater archaeology. The researchers conducted a surface reconnaissance survey to locate the site where the Battle of Lepanto took place on 7 October 1571. Their remote sensing surveying resulted in a map of two “target” areas that showed promise as possible remnants of wrecks from that battle and proposed a ground truth survey for their identification and in the detection of two modern shipwrecks. The ground truth survey was never fulfilled. The objectives of our repeat surveys, which were completed 50 years later, were to relocate the findings of this pioneer survey with higher spatial and vertical resolution, to ground-truth the targets, fulfilling their investigation, and to interpret the newly collected data in the light of modern developments in marine geosciences. Our repeat surveys detected mound clusters and individual mounds referred to “target” areas. These mounds could be interpreted as the surface expression of mud and fluid expulsion from the underlying deformed soft sediments. The ground truth survey demonstrated that the tops of mounds represent biogenic mounds. The ROV survey did not show any indication of wreck remnants of the Battle of Lepanto within the two survey areas. The site formation processes of the two modern shipwrecks were also studied in detail. Two noticeable seafloor morphological features were detected around the wreck sites; field of small-sized pockmarks and seafloor depressions. We would like to dedicate this work to the memory of Peter Throckmorton and Harold E. Edgerton, who are among the pioneers in the formative years of underwater archaeology in Greece.

Seismic Response of Vertical Irregular Structures in Setback and Stepped Buildings

Vertical irregular buildings are frequently constructed across the globe for functional as well as aesthetic purpose. However post-earthquake reconnaissance survey reports revealed high seismic vulnerability of the building with vertical irregularities. Consequently it is very important to explore the reason behind the high seismic vulnerability and the poor performance of irregular structures during the earthquake. A humble effort is under taken considering several case studies comprising different configuration of vertical irregular structures, so as to comprehend the seismic behavior of vertical irregular structure using response spectrum and pushover analysis has been attempted in finite element software ETABS 16.2.1 version. The results of the analysis indicate the irregular structures have ample chance of higher stress concentration as well as higher displacement demand at the vicinity of irregularity. Member strength enhancement at the vicinity of vertical irregularity may improve the overall seismic performance of the building. Also, this research checks the adequacy of fundamental mode properties for the quantification of vertical irregularity. Furthermore, pushover analysis has been done to observe the hinge formation pattern and also the plastic hinge rotation for observing the performance level of building.

Alfnoor: a population study on Ariel's low resolution transmission spectra.

<p>In the next decade, the Ariel Space Telescope will provide the first statistical data set of exoplanet spectra, performing spectroscopic observations of about 1000 exoplanets in the wavelength range 0.5 - 7.8 micron during its Reconnaissance Survey. The Ariel Reconnaissance Survey has been designed specifically to identify planets without molecular features in their atmosphere, and select targets (about 500) for accurate chemical characterisation with higher SNR spectroscopic observations.</p> <p>In this work, we investigate the information content of Ariel's Reconnaissance Survey low resolution transmission spectra. We produce different planetary populations using the Ariel candidate target list, randomizing the planetary atmospheres, and simulating the Ariel observations using the Alfnoor software. Then we analyse the dataset, getting three different results:</p> <p>(1) We present a solid strategy that will allow selecting candidate planets to be reobserved in an Ariel's higher resolution, using a chi-squared based metric to identify the flat spectra.</p> <p>(2) Because the reconnaissance survey is not optimised for spectral retrieval, we propose a novel model-independent metric to preliminary classify exoplanets by their atmospheric composition. Without any other planetary information than the spectrum, our metric proves capable of indicating the presence of a molecule when its abundance in the atmosphere is in excess of 10<sup>-4</sup> in mixing ratio.</p> <p>(3) We introduce the possibility of finding other methods to better exploit the data scientific content. We report as an example of possible strategies, a preliminary study involving Deep and Machine Learning algorithms. We show that their performance in identifying the presence of a certain molecule in the spectra is marginally better than our metric for some of these algorithms, while others outperform the metric. </p> <p>We conclude that the the Ariel reconnaissance survey is effective in detecting exoplanets manifesting featureless spectra, and we further show that the data collected in this observing mode have a rich scientific content, allowing for a first chemical classification of the observed targets.</p>
