The special properties of soy preparations make them common additives for food production and can be dangerous for sensitive individuals. Our aim was to check consumers’ awareness of potential risks of soy preparations added to numerous food products, depending on respondents’ education, and to evaluate immunoreactive properties of chosen soy preparations. A personal questionnaire was used. Respondents (n = 251) were aged 23–28 years old, lived in Poland, and were graduates or students in their last year of food technology, medicine, and university of technology. The slot blot and Western blotting methods were used to mark immunoreactivity of soy preparations. It was shown that most respondents often or usually read labels of food products they buy. The surveyed indicated protein is the allergenic component in soy. Almost half of them were of the opinion that hydrolysis removes the allergenic properties of soy. Most of the medical students surveyed thought that people allergic to soy may consume products that contain soy preparations. The analytical results indicated that soy preparation contained protein fractions that were immunoreactive with sera of allergenic patients. It was proven that preparations, even hydrolysates, contain immunoreactive proteins that may be the source of hidden allergens, even though they are not recognized as dangerous by well-educated respondents.

AbstractData regarding clinical relevance of house dust mite (HDM) components over allergen immunotherapy (AIT) for allergic rhinitis (AR) are lacking. 18 adult AR patients receiving HDM-AIT for 52 weeks were followed up to assess serum levels of sIgE and sIgG4 to HDM components. The study showed that Der p1, p2, p23, Der f1 and f2, are important sensitizing components of HDM, of which Der p1 appears to be the most clinically relevant allergenic component for effective AIT.

Background. For wide introduction of the component allergy diagnostics in laboratory practice it is necessary to create methods of production, purification and verification of synthetic allergens. Major birch pollen protein Bet v 1, a representative of the superfamily PR-10, is interesting due to the high incidence of sensitization and the manifestation of cross-reactive properties. Methods. To receive a synthetic protein DNA cloning techniques were used, followed by expression in E. coli. Purification was made by metal-affinity chromatography. Evaluation of immunochemical properties was held in several tests including ELISA analysis and line-blot. Results. We have obtained high-yield bacterial strain E. coli, containing expression vector for protein Bet v 1 production. Physico-chemical and immunological properties were estimated in various test systems with the reference panel of serum. Conclusion. It was shown that the resulting synthetic analogue of protein Bet v 1 can be used to measure the presence of specific immunoglobulin E in serum samples. This allergenic component may be used for estimation of each component of the sensitization profile.

Allergy prevalence and severity varies seasonally in humans, presumably due to intra-annual changes in allergen exposure. However, it is possible that seasonality of allergic responses is also influenced by seasonal changes in the immune system. Here, we asked whether extended exposure to different day lengths would alter allergic responses to pentadecylcatechol (PDC), an allergenic component of poison ivy ( Toxicodendron radicans (L.) Kuntze), in Siberian hamsters ( Phodopus sungorus (Pallas, 1773)), a species exhibiting extensive seasonal variation in immune functions. We found that contact dermatitis responses were larger in short day-length (SD) housed animals than in long day-length (LD) housed animals even though sensitization and challenge dosages of allergen were identical. Furthermore, SD animals were smaller and had regressed reproductive tissues compared with LD animals, results typically observed in this species in response to photoperiod. These data suggest that endogenous changes in immune functions, perhaps via melatonin, may underlie some seasonal variation in allergic responses.
