Determination of swithgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) seeds quality

Purpose. Developing a method for determination of the laboratory seed germination that could reduce the biological dormancy period and, accordingly, increase the intensity of germination. Methods. Laboratory, measuring and weighing, mathematical and statistical. Results. Cooling switchgrass seeds at a temperature of 10°C for 7 days on average for three years did not lead to a decrease in germination energy and germination compared to cooling for 14 days. These indexes were almost the same and amounted to 74 and 76%, 73 and 75%, respectively. There were no significant deviations in germination energy and seed germination over the years of research as affected by duration of the cool period. The production test of the developed method, carried out in the accredited control and measuring laboratory, confirmed the obtained in the laboratory results. Conclusions. Seed germination by an improved method, when pre-cooling is carried out for 7 instead of 14 days and counting of germinated seeds on 15th day instead of 20th, has reduced the time to determine germination by 13 days without reducing the quality of analysis. It is advisable to determine the 1000-seed weight in one of three ways, but the most accurate is the third way, i.e. counting the seeds in 10 repetitions.

Productivity of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) agrophytocenoses for long-term use

Purpose. To determene the productivity of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) agrophytocenoses under the long-term use. Methods. Field, statistical, calculation and comparative. Results. During long-term switchgrass cultivation, the lowest yield was obtained in the first vegetation year: 19.7 t/ha in the control treatment, 25.3 and 17.5 t/ha in the experimental treatments. The average raw biomass yield was as following: 30.3 t/ha in the control (variety ‘Cave-in-Rock’), 32.6 t/ha and 26.5 t/ha in the experimental treatments (varieties ‘Kanlow’ and ‘Morozko’, respectively). The yield of solid biofuel (17.3 t/ha) indicates the advantage of ‘Kanlow’ over the control (11.7 t/ha). The lowest yield (15.7 t/ha) was obtained from ‘Morozko’ variety. The energy yield over the treatments: 312.8 GJ/ha in the control, 397.5 and 367.2 GJ/ha in the experimental treatments, respectively. The cost of the grown production was as following: 416.03 UAH/t in the control (‘Cave-in-Rock’), 312.01 UAH/t in ‘Kanlow’, and 366.42 UAH/t in ‘Morozko’. The profitability of the control (‘Cave-in-Rock’) was 69.5%, ‘Kanlow’ – 101.4%, ‘Morozko’ – 66.8%. Economic evaluation of the productivity of switchgrass agrophytocenoses resulted in the following ranking: ‘Kanlow’, ‘Cave-in-Rock’, ‘Morozko’. When analyzing the energy equivalent of switchgrass biomass production and energy consumption, it was found that ‘Kanlow’ yielded 588.8 GJ/ha and the control – 468.3 GJ/ha, which is lower by 120.5 GJ/ha. Conclusions. The yield of switchgrass agrophytocenoses on average over the years of research (2014–2019) was 30.3 t/ha in ‘Cave-in-Rock’ (the control), 32.6 t/ha in ‘Kanlow’, and 26.5 t/ha in ‘Morozko’. The energy equivalent of the obtained yield was 468.3 GJ/ha in ‘Cave-in-Rock’ and 588.8 GJ/ha in ‘Kanlow’, which is by 120.5 GJ/ha higher than in the control.

Optimal N Application Rates on Switchgrass for Producers and a Biorefinery

This study analyzes the effects of N fertilizer application rates on profitability of growing switchgrass and using the feedstock in a pyrolysis biorefinery facility to create a source of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply in Tennessee. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial bunchgrass native to North America with traits suitable for biofuel and co-product production. Previous chemical analysis has shown that ash content in switchgrass is related to the amount of nitrogen applied to the field, while at the biorefinery level, the percentage ash content reduces the biorefinery fuel output. To obtain optimal nitrogen (N) application rates for the switchgrass producers and the biorefinery, a two-part analysis is employed. First, a partial budgeting profitability analysis is conducted for this cropping enterprise at the farm-gate level without considering downstream implications of biomass quality, i.e., ash content. Second, the effects of higher ash content as a percentage of the feedstock on biorefinery output are analyzed. Results show farm-gate profit is maximized when N fertilizer is applied at 111 kg/ha, while as a result of increased production levels and decreased percentage ash content, biorefinery profit is maximized when N is applied at 157 kg/ha. Lower ash could lead to premium prices paid to switchgrass producers if higher quality feedstock were to be demanded as part of an integrated biofuel industry.

ВПЛИВ ВОЛОГОСТІ ЛОЖЕ ДЛЯ ПРОРОЩУВАННЯ НАСІННЯ ПРОСА ПРУТОПОДІБНОГО (PANICUM VIRGATUM L.) НА ЙОГО СХОЖІСТЬ

У статті наведено результати досліджень з впливу режимів зволоження ложа для пророщування насіння на його енергію проростання і схожість залежно від сортових особливостей для зниження стану спокою насіння та підвищення його якості. Встановлено, що найкраще проростало насіння проса прутоподібного за вологості ложа, яке створювали кіль-кістю води 30 мл на одну ростильню – у середньому за роки досліджень по чотирьох сортах на 10-у добу (енергія проростання) отримано 25 % сходів, а на 15-у добу (схожість) – 26 %. За вологості ложе, яке створювали кількістю води 15 (недостатнє зволоження) або більше 35 мл/ростильню (надмірне зволоження) як енергія проростання, так і схожість були достовірно мен-шими, порівняно з пророщуванням насіння на ложе, які створювали кількістю води 30 мл/ростильню. При зволоженні ложе за додавання води 20‒25 та більше 30 мл на одну ростильню, кількість пророслого насіння зменшувалася, порівняно з пророщу-ванням на ложе, де додавали 30 мл води і достовірно збільшувалася, порівняно з пророщуванням на ложе, де води додавали 15 та 35 мл/ростильню. Закономірності з інтенсивності проростання насіння сортів різного походження та груп стиглості, залежно від ступеню зволоження, були аналогічними. Найвищі показники якості всіх сортів були за зволоження ложе водою у кількості 25 та 30 мл/ростильню. Зменшення чи збільшення води призводило до зниження інтенсивності проростання насіння. Найкраще на збільшення ступеню зволоження реагував середньостиглий сорт Морозко української селекції, в усі дати обліку кількість насіння, що проросло була найбільшою. Найнижчі показники якості насіння за всіх режимів зволоження отримані у пізньостиглого сорту Alamo: на 15-у добу кількість пророслого насіння при зволоженні 15 та 20 мл води на рос-тильну була меншою на 4 %, за режимів зволоження 30 та 35 мл/ростильню, відповідно – на 7 та 11 %, порівняно з сортом Морозко (НІР 0,05 сорт = 1,0 %). З’ясовано, що для проростання насіння проса прутоподібного потреба у воді становить 33,3–40,0 % від його власної маси. Як недостатнє та надмірне зволоження ложа за пророщування насіння проса прутоподібного, так і його сортові особливості достовірно впливали на інтенсивність проростання насіння. Найнижчі показники якості на-сіння були у пізньостиглого сорту Alamo, найвищі – в сорту Морозко.

Effects of Exogenous Application of Plant Growth Regulators (SNP and GA3) on Phytoextraction by Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) Grown in Lead (Pb) Contaminated Soil

Soil lead (Pb) contamination is a major environmental and public health risk. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), a second-generation biofuel crop, is potentially useful for the long-term phytoremediation and phytoextraction of Pb contaminated soils. We evaluated the efficacy of a coordinated foliar application of plant growth regulators and soil fungicide and a chelator in order to optimize phytoextraction. Plants were grown in soil culture under controlled conditions. First, three exogenous nitric oxide (NO) donors were evaluated at multiple concentrations: (1) S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP); (2) sodium nitroprusside (SNP); and (3) S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). Second, the effect of SNP (0.5 μM) was examined further with the model chelate EDTA and the soil fungicide propicanazole. Third, a combined foliar application of SNP and gibberellic acid (GA3) was examined with EDTA and propicanazole. The soil application of propiconazole (a broad-spectrum fungicides) reduced AMF colonization and allowed greater Pb phytoextraction. The foliar application of SNP resulted in similar concentrations of Pb (roots and foliage) to plants that were challenged with chelates and soil fungicides. The combined foliar application of SNP and GA3 resulted in significantly greater average Pb concentration (243 mg kg−1) in plant foliage in comparison to control plants (182 mg kg−1) and plants treated with GA3 alone (202 mg kg−1). The combined foliar application of SNP and GA3 resulted in the greatest phytoextraction efficiency and could therefore potentially improve phytoextraction by switchgrass grown in Pb contaminated soils.
