Distinctive Roles of Two Acinetobactin Isomers in Challenging Host Nutritional Immunity

Acinetobacter baumannii has acquired antibiotic resistance at an alarming rate, and it is becoming a serious threat to society, particularly due to the paucity of effective treatment options. Acinetobactin is a siderophore of Acinetobacter baumannii , responsible for active iron supply, and it serves as a key virulence factor to counter host nutritional immunity during infection.

Iron Deficiency Leads to Chlorosis Through Impacting Chlorophyll Synthesis and Nitrogen Metabolism in Areca catechu L.

Deficiency of certain elements can cause leaf chlorosis in Areca catechu L. trees, which causes considerable production loss. The linkage between nutrient deficiency and chlorosis phenomenon and physiological defect in A. catechu remains unclear. Here, we found that low iron supply is a determinant for chlorosis of A. catechu seedling, and excessive iron supply resulted in dark green leaves. We also observed morphological characters of A. catechu seedlings under different iron levels and compared their fresh weight, chlorophyll contents, chloroplast structures and photosynthetic activities. Results showed that iron deficiency directly caused chloroplast degeneration and reduced chlorophyll synthesis in chlorosis leaves, while excessive iron treatment can increase chlorophyll contents, chloroplasts sizes, and inflated starch granules. However, both excessive and deficient of iron decreases fresh weight and photosynthetic rate in A. catechu seedlings. Therefore, we applied transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches to understand the effect of different iron supply to A. catechu seedlings. The genes involved in nitrogen assimilation pathway, such as NR (nitrate reductase) and GOGAT (glutamate synthase), were significantly down-regulated under both iron deficiency and excessive iron. Moreover, the accumulation of organic acids and flavonoids indicated a potential way for A. catechu to endure iron deficiency. On the other hand, the up-regulation of POD-related genes was assumed to be a defense strategy against the excessive iron toxicity. Our data demonstrated that A. catechu is an iron-sensitive species, therefore the precise control of iron level is believed to be the key point for A. catechu cultivation.

Iron colloids dominate sedimentary supply to the ocean interior

Dissolution of marine sediment is a key source of dissolved iron (Fe) that regulates the ocean carbon cycle. Currently, our prevailing understanding, encapsulated in ocean models, focuses on low-oxygen reductive supply mechanisms and neglects the emerging evidence from iron isotopes in seawater and sediment porewaters for additional nonreductive dissolution processes. Here, we combine measurements of Fe colloids and dissolved δ56Fe in shallow porewaters spanning the full depth of the South Atlantic Ocean to demonstrate that it is lithogenic colloid production that fuels sedimentary iron supply away from low-oxygen systems. Iron colloids are ubiquitous in these oxic ocean sediment porewaters and account for the lithogenic isotope signature of dissolved Fe (δ56Fe = +0.07 ± 0.07‰) within and between ocean basins. Isotope model experiments demonstrate that only lithogenic weathering in both oxic and nitrogenous zones, rather than precipitation or ligand complexation of reduced Fe species, can account for the production of these porewater Fe colloids. The broader covariance between colloidal Fe and organic carbon (OC) abundance suggests that sorption of OC may control the nanoscale stability of Fe minerals by inhibiting the loss of Fe(oxyhydr)oxides to more crystalline minerals in the sediment. Oxic ocean sediments can therefore generate a large exchangeable reservoir of organo-mineral Fe colloids at the sediment water interface (a “rusty source”) that dominates the benthic supply of dissolved Fe to the ocean interior, alongside reductive supply pathways from shallower continental margins.

Iron metabolismin conditions of infection. Review

The purpose of writing the review. Analysis of publications on the role of iron metabolism in the manifestation of the septic process and the dependence of bacterial flora activity on the conditions of their access to iron. Methods. More than 200 publications in pubmed, Medline, EMBASE medical literature databases were analyzed between 2000 and 2018 using the search words: iron and infection, iron and sepsis, iron exchange, iron and bacteria - including and available works in domestic (e-library) literature. Results. The review uses materials from 61 publications that meet the challenges of the search and reflect both the relationship between iron exchange and the development of the septic process and the importance for the medical community of understanding the identified relationships in the search for future therapeutic approaches. Conclusion. The review provides evidence of direct iron involvement in the manifestation of the septic process caused by various bacterial (q/-) and fungal flora. Introduction of iron-hesing agents and ciderophon - conjugate drugs to infected patients today seems to be a biologically acceptable approach as an auxiliary therapy in the treatment of septic process caused by pathogens dependent on iron supply (many bacterial and fungal pathogens), but the problem that is being raised certainly requires further experimental and clinical research.
