Measurement of Bangudae Rock Joint Using Non-adhesive, Non-contact Inclinometer Slope Laser Measuring System

Daegokcheon Stream in Daegok-ri, Ulju-gun, is an area with a developed valley and bedrock from Gajisan Provincial Park to the confluence of the Taehwa River across the Yangsan Fault. To measure the rock of Bangudae petroglyphs, the mineralogical weathering, joints, and scours or cavities at the bottom were confirmed. The measurement was carried out for a short period of time on the joint of the bedrock on which the Bangudae petroglyphs were engraved. Compared to the measured value obtained using existing optical fiber (Ch4 150 µm), a displacement value of 300 µm was obtained using the non-attached, non-contact type of measuring instrument. In the future, it is inferred that this instrument could be used for various cultural properties if the HSV-value suitable for illuminance and various measurement experiences are stored.

Evaluation of Applicability to Metofluthrin-based Termiticide for the Traditional Wooden Buildings

In this study, we investigated the applicability of a termiticide based on metofluthrin for termite control on traditional wooden buildings. To evaluate their mortality, termites were exposed to the agent, diluted to various concentrations, for seven days; it was found that it had a sufficient insecticidal effect although there was a difference depending on the degree of agent dilution. Next, the effect on Dancheong, used in traditional wooden structures, was measured based on the color change according to the number of agent treatments. The results showed that only the color difference value of two pigments (i.e., Bun and Juhong) was measured as 3.0 or higher. However, there this varied according to the dilution ratio. Thus, it was found that most pigments had little effect on the color of Dancheong. Finally, the termiticidal efficacy of the agent when applied to wood was evaluated. We found that the specimens coated with 10-fold and 20-fold dilutions exhibited 2.83 and 6.28% mass loss, respectively. The 10-fold dilution satisfied the performance of termiticide as a mass loss of less than 3%. In conclusion, the metofluthrin-based agent used in this study has little effect on various Dancheong pigments and has a termiticidal effect against termites; it is therefore suggested that it may be used in preserving traditional wooden cultural properties in Korea.

BOOK COVER SAMPLES IN THE YUSUF AGA MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY

The need to use “covers” has arisen in order to preserve and protect written works. The protective cover made to keep the leaves of a magazine or book together without falling apart and without breaking their order is called a binding. Books, which are at the forefront of Turkish cultural heritage, have a special place among movable cultural properties. These resources, which form a bridge between the past and the future, are preserved in various museums, libraries and collections in order to carry them to future generations. Yusuf Aga Manuscript Library is one of the places where these resources are preserved. Descriptive method was used in this study. It is aimed to introduce the seven bindings in the Yusuf Ağa Manuscript Library in detail, with the material, construction technique, decoration features, colors used, and then to determine the connections of the book cover with similar examples and to reveal its position in the bookbinding art and its development process scientifically. In addition, information on the qualitative characteristics of the manuscripts in question, such as the scope, the periods they belong to, and the names of the works, has been arranged on the basis of the data in the inventory. What Makes a Horse a Horse? Configurational Aspects of Ancient Egyptian Equines

We expect depictions of things we know to contain certain elements. These elements depend on our experience, our visual requirements, culture, upbringing, and so on. For example, in order to recognise a certain subject, a degree of realism is expected. If these requirements are not met, either we are unable to correctly identify the subject as the intended subject, or we project our expectations and attribute the lack thereof as mistakes, inabilities, or lack of knowledge of the author. This bias is predominantly present in the analysis of ancient Egyptian images (and texts, for that matter) and is inappropriate. In order to correctly understand the intentions of the creator and the image, we need to understand their cultural properties, their pictorial system, and, most importantly, the function of the image. This article will look at depictions of horses from ancient Egypt, taking their function as a starting point, and discuss their configurational aspects in terms of the function of the image.

Experiences of the Hungarian criminal jurisdiction concerning the illicit trafficking of cultural properties

Purpose The special purpose of this research was to identify the current features of illicit trade of cultural properties in Hungary and the procedures dealing with it. These offences pose a significant risk of damage to cultural property and have a strong link with organised crime. This relationship underlines the need for a criminal law approach worldwide in the field of the protection of cultural goods. Design/methodology/approach To explore the current situation in Hungary, an empirical research was conducted in 2018 with questionnaires designed to obtain data from the criminal records. To examine the phenomenon of “illicit trafficking”, the following types of crimes against cultural goods were selected: theft, dealing in stolen goods, robbery, budget fraud and criminal offences with protected cultural goods. Findings As a summary, it has to be stated that even though the number of the criminal procedure of these crimes in Hungary is low, it cannot be concluded that illicit trafficking of cultural goods in Hungary occurs only rarely. A specific characteristic of the phenomenon is high latency. To examine this phenomenon, the author has drawn up a list of indicators. Practical implications The aim of this project is to provide background information and materials for training programs. It is necessary to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the problem. The role of the experts is outstanding in these cases; the clear definition of their tasks and competence is very important. Information to all “actors of this scene” (from the collector to the art dealers) can contribute to the prevention too. Originality/value This study presents the characteristics of the criminal procedures and the difficulties of both the detection and the evidentiary process to provide educational material for training. The author would like to raise awareness about the problem and draw attention to the need for unified legal practice.

Molecular Detection and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Salmonella Species in Chickens

The study was intended for molecular detection of Salmonella Spp isolated from chicken. A total of 160 samples comprising of 40 liver, 40 spleen, 40 lungs and 40 intestines were collected directly into buffered peptone in universal bottles at the poultry slaughter houses of the four districts in Jos South Local Government area of Plateau State. The samples were enriched in 10 ml of Rappaport-Vassiliades broth and cultured onto Xylems Lysine Deoxycholate (XLD) agar for the isolation of bacteria. The isolated bacteria were identified by studying staining characteristics, cultural properties on different selective media, biochemical tests, catalase and coagulase test, and finally by PCR. Out of 160 samples, 65 (41%) samples were found positive for Salmonella Spp on XLD and 24 (37%) positive by biochemical analysis. Two(2) Salmonella isolates were amplified by 942 bp gene based PCR. Antimicrobial sensitivity test was carried out to ascertain the susceptibility of the organism to various antibiotics. Its results showed that the Salmonella isolates were resistant to amoxycillin (100%) and erythromycin (100%), gentamicin (100%), Clindamycin (100%) streptomycin (100%), tetracycline (100%), sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim (100%) but sensitive to Ceftiofur (100%).
