The similarity transformation is introduced for studying free boundary value problems for a class of generalized convection-diffusion equation. A class of singular nonlinear boundary value problems are obtained and solved by using Adomian decomposition method (ADM). The approximate solution can be expressed in terms of a rapid convergent power series with easily computable terms. The efficiency and reliability of the approximate solution are verified by numerical ones. The effects of the variable thermal conduction k(z), convection functional coefficient h(z), power law exponent n, and parameter α on the flux transport characteristics are presented graphically and analyzed in detail.

We consider the optimal stopping and optimal control problems related to stochastic variational inequalities modeling elasto-plastic oscillators subject to random forcing. We formally derive the corresponding free boundary value problems and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations which belong to a class of nonlinear partial of differential equations with nonlocal Dirichlet boundary conditions. Then, we focus on solving numerically these equations by employing a combination of Howard’s algorithm and the numerical approach [A backward Kolmogorov equation approach to compute means, moments and correlations of non-smooth stochastic dynamical systems; Mertz, Stadler, Wylie; 2017] for this type of boundary conditions. Numerical experiments are given.

We study fractional variational problems in terms of a generalized fractional integral with Lagrangians depending on classical derivatives, generalized fractional integrals and derivatives. We obtain necessary optimality conditions for the basic and isoperimetric problems, as well as natural boundary conditions for free-boundary value problems. The fractional action-like variational approach (FALVA) is extended and some applications to physics discussed.

This paper is concerned with regime-switching American option pricing. We develop new numerical schemes by extending the penalty method approach and by employing the θ-method. With regime-switching, American option prices satisfy a system of m free boundary value problems, where m is the number of regimes considered for the market. An (optimal) early exercise boundary is associated with each regime. Straightforward implementation of the θ-method would result in a system of nonlinear equations requiring a time-consuming iterative procedure at each time step. To avoid such complications, we implement an implicit approach by explicitly treating the nonlinear terms and/or the linear terms from other regimes, resulting in computationally efficient algorithms. We establish an upper bound condition for the time step size and prove that under the condition the implicit schemes satisfy a discrete version of the positivity constraint for American option values. We compare the implicit schemes with a tree model that generalizes the Cox-Ross-Rubinstein (CRR) binomial tree model, and with an analytical approximation solution for two-regime case due to Buffington and Elliott. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the new implicit schemes.

Nonisothermal viscous two-fluid flows occur in numerous kinds of coating devices. The corresponding mathematical models often represent two-dimensional free boundary value problems for the Navier-Stokes equations or their modifications. In the present paper we are concerned with a particular problem of coupled heat and mass transfer. Marangoni convection is incorporated, too. The solvability of a corresponding stationary problem is discussed. The obtained results generalize previous results for a similar isothermal problem.
