Exponentially Fitted Element-Free Galerkin Approach for Nonlinear Singularly Perturbed Problems

As it is well recognized that conventional numerical schemes are inefficient in approximating the solutions of the singularly perturbed problems (SPP) in the boundary layer region, in the present work, an effort has been made to propose a robust and efficient numerical approach known as element-free Galerkin (EFG) technique to capture these solutions with a high precision of accuracy. Since a lot of weight functions exist in the literature which plays a crucial role in the moving least square (MLS) approximations for generating the shape functions and hence affect the accuracy of the numerical solution, in the present work, due emphasis has been given to propose a robust weight function for the element-free Galerkin scheme for SPP. The key feature of nonrequirement of elements or node connectivity of the EFG method has also been utilized by proposing a way to generate nonuniformly distributed nodes. In order to verify the computational consistency and robustness of the proposed scheme, a variety of linear and nonlinear numerical examples have been considered and L ∞ errors have been presented. Comparison of the EFG solutions with those available in the literature depicts the superiority of the proposed scheme.

Effect of Eccentricity and Surface Roughness On Probabilistic Performance of Two Axial Groove Bearing

This paper presents the effect of eccentricity and surface roughness on the probabilistic performance of two axial groove hydrodynamic journal bearing. In general, it is difficult to quantify experimentally the variabilities involved in dynamic responses of the hydrodynamic bearing due to the randomness involved in surface asperity and eccentricity ratio. The deterministic models available for the analysis of the bearings are not capable to include such uncertainties. These uncertainties arise from the manufacturing imperfections, misalignment of the bearing, frictional wear, uncertain operating condition, model inaccuracy. To simulate such variabilities, Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is carried out. Stochastic steady-state and dynamic coefficients are obtained by solving the Reynolds equation using the surrogate-based finite difference method. Sensitivity analysis of the performance parameters with respect to stochastic input parameters is portrayed. The moving least square (MLS) model is constructed as the surrogate to increase the computational efficiency. The significant influences of stochastic input parameters such as surface roughness and eccentricity ratio are observed on the random hydrodynamic performance of two axial groove journal bearing.

Studying the deployment of high-lift devices by using dynamic immersed boundaries

Purpose This paper aims to describe a research effort towards the comprehension of the unsteady phenomena due to the deployment of high-lift devices at approach/landing conditions. Design/methodology/approach The work starts from a preexisting platform based on an immersed boundary (IB) method whose capabilities are extended to study compressible and viscous flows around moving/deforming objects. A hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian approach is designed to consider the motion of multiple bodies through a fixed Cartesian mesh. That is, the cells’ volumes do not move in space but rather they observe the solid walls crossing themselves. A dynamic discrete forcing makes use of a moving least-square procedure which has been validated by simulating well-known benchmarks available for rigid body motions. Partitioned fluid-structure interactions (FSI) strategies are explored to consider aeroelastic phenomena. A shared platform, between the aerodynamic and the structural solvers, fulfils the loads’ transfer and drives the sequence of the operating steps. Findings The first part of the results is devoted to a basic two-dimensional study aiming at evaluating the accuracy of the method when simple rigid motions are prescribed. Afterwards, the paper discusses the solution obtained when applying the dynamic IB method to the rigid deployment of a Krueger-flap. The final section discusses the aeroelastic behaviour of a three-element airfoil during its deployment phase. A loose FSI coupling is applied for estimating the possible loads’ downgrade. Research limitations/implications The IB surfaces are allowed to move less than one IB-cell size at each time-step de-facto restricting the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) based on the wall velocity to be smaller than unity. The violation of this constraint would impair the explicit character of the method. Practical implications The proposed method improves automation in FSI numerical analysis and relaxes the human expertise/effort for meshing the computational domain around complex three-dimensional geometries. The logical consequence is an overall speed-up of the simulation process. Originality/value The value of the paper consists in demonstrating the applicability of dynamic IB techniques for studying high-lift devices. In particular, the proposed Cartesian method does not want to compete with body-conforming ones whose accuracy remains generally superior. Rather, the merit of this research is to propose a fast and automatic simulation system as a viable alternative to classic multi-block structured, chimaera or unstructured tools.

A Smoothed GFEM Based on Taylor Expansion and Constrained MLS for Analysis of Reissner–Mindlin Plate

Based on the Taylor Expansion and constrained moving least square function, a smoothed GFEM (SGFEM) is proposed in this paper for static, free vibration and buckling analysis of Reissner–Mindlin plate. The displacement function based on SGFEM is composed of classical linear finite element shape function and nodal displacement function, which are obtained by introducing the gradient smoothed meshfree approximation in Taylor expansion of nodal displacement function. A constrained moving least square function is proposed for constituting meshfree nodal displacement function. The merits of the proposed SGFEM, including high accuracy, rapid error convergence, insensitive to mesh distortion, free of shear-locking problem, no extra DOFs and temporal stability, etc., are demonstrated by several typical examples and comparisons with other numerical methods.

Perturbation-Based Stochastic Meshless Method for Buckling Analysis of Plates

The current paper presents a perturbation-based stochastic eigenvalue buckling analysis of thin plates using element free Galerkin method. Spatial variation in Young’s modulus is modeled as a homogeneous random field and moving least square-based shape function method is employed for discretizing the random field. Perturbation method is used to evaluate the statistics of buckling loads. Numerical examples wherein rectangular plates with different boundary conditions are solved and the statistics obtained are compared with those calculated using Monte Carlo simulation. Different parametric studies are also conducted. The results obtained from perturbation method are found to be reasonably accurate for coefficient of variation (CV) values less than 20% for random fields with normal distribution. Further it is observed that for random fields with lognormal distribution, the proposed method produces reasonably accurate results up to a CV of 30%.

An efficient localized collocation solver for anomalous diffusion on surfaces

This paper introduces an efficient collocation solver, the generalized finite difference method (GFDM) combined with the recent-developed scale-dependent time stepping method (SD-TSM), to predict the anomalous diffusion behavior on surfaces governed by surface time-fractional diffusion equations. In the proposed solver, the GFDM is used in spatial discretization and SD-TSM is used in temporal discretization. Based on the moving least square theorem and Taylor series, the GFDM introduces the stencil selection algorithms to choose the stencil support of a certain node from the whole discretization nodes on the surface. It inherits the similar properties from the standard FDM and avoids the mesh generation, which is available particularly for high-dimensional irregular discretization nodes. The SD-TSM is a non-uniform temporal discretization method involving the idea of metric, which links the fractional derivative order with the non-uniform discretization strategy. Compared with the traditional time stepping methods, GFDM combined with SD-TSM deals well with the low accuracy in the early period. Numerical investigations are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed GFDM in conjunction with SD-TSM for solving either single or coupled fractional diffusion equations on surfaces.

Ανάπτυξη μοντέλων πολλαπλής κλίμακας υπολογιστικής ρευστομηχανικής, ειδικά για τον κάθε ασθενή, για το σχηματισμό και την εξέλιξη της αθηροσκλήρωσης για το καρδιαγγειακό και περιφερικό σύστημα

Οι παθήσεις που οφείλονται στην αθηρωματική νόσο αποτελούν την κύρια αιτία νοσηρότητας και θνησιμότητας στο δυτικό κόσμο. Η αθηρωματική νόσος, η κυρίαρχη υποκείμενη αιτία των καρδιοαγγειακών και περιφερικών παθήσεων, εμφανίζεται σε συγκεκριμένες θέσεις στο αρτηριακό τοίχωμα. Είναι μια περίπλοκη φλεγμονώδης διαδικασία των μεσαίων και μεγάλων αρτηριών. Εξελίσσεται δια βίου, ενώ η κλινική εκδήλωσή της παρατηρείται συνήθως στη μέση ηλικία. Το πρόβλημα της αθηρωματικής νόσου θεωρείται διεπιστημονικό και έχει μελετηθεί από διάφορους κλάδους των επιστημών. Ωστόσο, παρά τη μεγάλη πρόοδο που έχει σημειωθεί τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, το θέμα παραμένει ανοικτό και θεωρείται ότι απέχουμε από την επίλυσή του. Στα τρία πρώτα κεφαλαία της διδακτορικής διατριβής, αρχικά αναλύουμε το ιατρικό πρόβλημα της αθηρωματικής νόσου. Στη συνέχεια αναφέρεται ο ρόλος της διατμητικής τάσης στην παθογένεση της αθηροσκλήρωσης. Παρόλο που το σύνολο των αρτηριών εκτίθεται στους αθηρογόνους παράγοντες κινδύνου, η αθηρωματική πλάκα εμφανίζεται σε συγκεκριμένα σημεία όπου η ροή διαταράσσεται. Μέσω της υπολογιστικής ρευστοδυναμικής έχουμε τη δυνατότητα να διερευνήσουμε το πεδίο ροής μέσα στα αγγεία και να προσδιορίσουμε σε ποια σημεία η ροή διαταράσσεται και επομένως να προβλέψουμε πιθανά σημεία ανάπτυξης της αθηροσκλήρωσης. Τέλος αναλύουμε συνοπτικά τις αριθμητικές μεθόδους που χρησιμοποιήσαμε και συγκεκριμένα την μέθοδο των πεπερασμένων όγκων και τη μέθοδο της τοπικής ταύτισης σημείων χωρίς πλέγμα. Στο κεφάλαιο 4, μελετάμε την αιματική ροή στη διακλάδωση της αριστερής στεφανιαίας αρτηρίας. Με βάση τη βιβλιογραφία αυτή η περιοχή είναι ευπαθής στην αθηρωματική νόσο. Αρχικά, πραγματοποιήθηκε τρισδιάστατη ανακατασκευή δεδομένων υπολογιστικής τομογραφίας που αντλήθηκαν από τη βάση δεδομένων του Πανεπιστημιακού Γενικού Νοσοκομείου Αττικόν, αξιοποιώντας το λογισμικό VMTK. Στη συνέχεια επεξεργαστήκαμε τη γεωμετρία μας στο λογισμικό Blender, ώστε να είναι κατάλληλη για να εισαχθεί στο λογισμικό πεπερασμένων όγκων Ansys CFX. Αναλυτικότερα επί της μεθοδολογίας, προσεγγίζουμε το αρτηριακό τοίχωμα με δύο διαφορετικές τεχνικές (άκαμπτο και ελαστικό). Μελετάμε κατά πόσο η μεταβολή στο μήκος της γεωμετρίας επηρεάζει την διατμητική τάση και τα παράγωγά της (αιμοδυναμικοί δείκτες). Στη συνέχεια συγκρίνουμε τις δύο διαφορετικές τεχνικές προσέγγισης του αρτηριακού τοιχώματος ώστε να διαπιστώσουμε αν επηρεάζονται οι αιμοδυναμικοί δείκτες. Τέλος, θεωρώντας την αρτηρία ελαστική, εξετάζουμε αν μεταβάλλεται το πεδίο ροής με την αλλαγή του πάχους του τοιχώματος. Στο Κεφάλαιο 5 επικεντρωνόμαστε στη θεραπεία της αθηροσκλήρωσης με τη βοήθεια των μαγνητικών νανοσωματιδίων. Για την θεραπεία της αθηρωματικής νόσου έχουν προταθεί διάφορες προσεγγίσεις. Μια πρόσφατη και ιδιαίτερα ελπιδοφόρα προσέγγιση είναι μέσω μαγνητικών νανοσωματιδίων. Φάρμακα επισυνάπτονται επάνω στην επιφάνεια των νανοσωματιδίων και στη συνέχεια με την βοήθεια ενός εξωτερικού μαγνητικού πεδίου, κατευθύνονται στην περιοχή ενδιαφέροντος. Το πλεονέκτημα της προσέγγισης αυτής είναι ότι πρόκειται για μη-επεμβατική μέθοδο. Ο θεραπευτικός στόχος είναι η μείωση της πιθανότητας εμφάνισης εμφράγματος του μυοκαρδίου και η σταθεροποίηση της αθηρωματικής πλάκας. Συγκεκριμένα, μελετάμε την μαγνητική στόχευση φαρμάκου σε πρότυπες γεωμετρίες δύο διαστάσεων. Θεωρούμε ένα μοντέλο δύο φάσεων για την επίλυση του της ροής του αίματος και της κίνησης των μαγνητικών νανοσωματιδίων. Για την επίλυση του προβλήματος χρησιμοποιούμε μια μέθοδο τοπικής ταύτισης σημείων χωρίς πλέγμα (Meshless Point Collocation) σε συνδυασμό με την προσέγγιση των ελαχίστων κυλιομένων τετραγώνων (Moving Least Square). Η ορθότητα των αριθμητικών μας αποτελεσμάτων, επιβεβαιώθηκε κατόπιν σύγκρισης με δημοσιευμένες εργασίες. Βασιστήκαμε σε in-house κώδικες που αναπτύχθηκαν αρχικά στη γλώσσα προγραμματισμού Matlab και στη συνέχεια στη γλώσσα προγραμματισμού Python. Διερευνούμε την σημασία κρίσιμων παραγόντων της μαγνητικής στόχευσης όπως, τον όγκο κλάσματος των μαγνητικών νανοσωματιδίων, τη θέση της μαγνητικής πηγής και την ένταση του μαγνητικού πεδίου. Συγκρίνουμε δύο διαφορετικές μεθόδους εισαγωγής των νανοσωματιδίων στο αγγείο. Μελετούμε τη βιομαγνητική ροή σε αγγείο με στένωση και σε αγγείο με διακλάδωση. Σε όλες τις παραπάνω περιπτώσεις παρουσιάζουμε την μέση αδιάστατη συγκέντρωση των νανοσωματιδίων και τη μέση χρονική διατμητική τάση κατά τη διάρκεια ενός καρδιακού κύκλου. Ο λόγος εξέτασης των δύο αυτών παραμέτρων είναι ότι, αφενός το ζητούμενο είναι η μέγιστη συγκέντρωση νανοσωματιδίων στην περιοχή ενδιαφέροντος, αφετέρου αυτό πρέπει να επιτευχθεί με όσον το δυνατόν μικρότερες διαταραχές της αιματικής ροής ώστε να αποφευχθεί η πιθανότητα θρόμβωσης εξαιτίας της συσσωμάτωσης των νανοσωματιδίων. Στο Κεφάλαιο 6 μελετάμε την αιματική ροή στην περιοχή της καρωτίδας αρτηρίας. Οι γιατροί αξιολογούν τις αρτηρίες που παρουσιάζουν στένωση και λαμβάνουν τις αποφάσεις τους για την αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος βασιζόμενοι στην διαγνωστική εξέταση και προσδιορίζοντας τον βαθμό της στένωσης. Ωστόσο αυτή η μέθοδος αδυνατεί να παρέχει σημαντικά στοιχεία για την ροή στα αγγεία καθώς και για πιθανούς τρόπους εξέλιξης της αθηροσκληρωτικής νόσου. Επί της μεθοδολογίας που ακολουθήσαμε, αρχικά πραγματοποιήθηκε τρισδιάστατη ανακατασκευή δεδομένων υπολογιστικής τομογραφίας τα οποία προήλθαν από τη βάση δεδομένων του Πανεπιστημιακού Γενικού Νοσοκομείου Πατρών αξιοποιώντας το λογισμικό ITK-SNAP. Εν συνεχεία, επεξεργάστηκαν διαδοχικά στα λογισμικά Blender και FreeCAD ώστε οι γεωμετρίες να είναι κατάλληλες να εισαχθούν στο λογισμικό υπολογιστικής ρευστοδυναμικής πεπερασμένων όγκων OpenFOAM. Η ροή θεωρήθηκε ασυμπίεστη και το αίμα μη-Νευτώνειο. Επιβεβαιώσαμε την ορθότητα των αποτελεσμάτων της αριθμητικής μεθόδου στην περιοχή της στένωσης συγκρίνοντας τα με πειραματικά δεδομένα. Λόγω των στενώσεων που παρουσίαζαν οι γεωμετρίες, η ροή θεωρήθηκε τυρβώδης. Αναλυτικότερα, στα αποτελέσματα παρουσιάζουμε τους τρεις σημαντικότερους αιμοδυναμικούς δείκτες που μας παρέχουν κρίσιμες πληροφορίες για την ροή εντός την αρτηριών. Επίσης παραθέτουμε διαγράμματα με τον ρυθμό της αιματικής ροής στις δύο εξόδους της αρτηρίας κατά τη διάρκεια ενός καρδιακού κύκλου. Μέσω των παραπάνω, επιχειρούμε να προβλέψουμε ποιες περιπτώσεις ασθενών παρουσιάζουν αυξημένες πιθανότητες για θρόμβωση. Επιπροσθέτως ποίες περιοχές της καρωτίδας αρτηρίας είναι ευάλωτες και μελλοντικά ενδέχεται να αναπτυχθεί περαιτέρω η αθηροσκλήρυνση. Τέλος μέσω του ρυθμού της αιματικής ροής στις δύο εξόδους μπορούμε να διαπιστώσουμε αν η αιμάτωση των ζωτικών οργάνων κρίνεται επαρκής. Εν΄ κατακλείδι, στη παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή απαντάμε σε ερωτήματα που αφορούν τόσο τη διάγνωση όσο και τη θεραπεία της αθηρωματικής νόσου. ΄Οσον αφορά τη διάγνωση, μελετήθηκαν διάφοροι αιμοδυναμικοί δείκτες που πιθανόν μπορούν να συμβάλουν στο προσδιορισμό των σημείων ανάπτυξης της αθηρωματικής πλάκας. Στις στεφανιαίες αρτηρίες μελετάμε ποία από τις δύο προσεγγίσεις (άκαμπτα και ελαστικά τοιχώματα) είναι καταλληλότερη και κατά πόσο το μήκος της γεωμετρίας επηρεάζει τα αποτελέσματα μας στην περιοχή ενδιαφέροντος με σκοπό να μειώσουμε τον υπολογιστικό χρόνο της επίλυσης. Στις καρωτιδικές αρτηρίες μελετήθηκαν επίσης οι αιμοδυναμικοί δείκτες παρουσία στένωσης. Στη θεραπεία, μελετήσαμε σε πρότυπες γεωμετρίες κρίσιμους παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν καθοριστικά τη μαγνητική στόχευση φαρμάκου.

Behavior of beam on elastic foundation using element free Galerkin method

One of mesh free methods, element free Galerkin method, is presented to analyze the finite beam on elastic foundation. The shape functions are constructed by using the moving least square interpolation based on a set of nodes that are arbitrarily distributed in specified domain. Discrete system equations are derived from the variation form of system equations. Numerical examples of finite beam on elastic foundation are given by establishing Matlab code. The results of this paper demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method with small errors compared to analytical solutions.
