A Source Physics Interpretation of Nonself-Similar Double-Corner-Frequency Source Spectral Model JA19_2S

We investigate the relation between the kinematic double-corner-frequency source spectral model JA19_2S (Ji and Archuleta, 2020) and static fault geometry scaling relations proposed by Leonard (2010). We find that the nonself-similar low-corner-frequency scaling relation of JA19_2S model can be explained using the fault length scaling relation of Leonard’s model combined with an average rupture velocity ∼70% of shear-wave speed for earthquakes 5.3 < M< 6.9. Earthquakes consistent with both models have magnitude-independent average static stress drop and average dynamic stress drop around 3 MPa. Their scaled energy e˜ is not a constant. The decrease of e˜ with magnitude can be fully explained by the magnitude dependence of the fault aspect ratio. The high-frequency source radiation is generally controlled by seismic moment, static stress drop, and dynamic stress drop but is further modulated by the fault aspect ratio and the relative location of the hypocenter. Based on these two models, the commonly quoted average rupture velocity of 70%–80% of shear-wave speed implies predominantly unilateral rupture.

Measured Hyperelastic Properties of Cervical Tissue with Shear-Wave Elastography

The nonlinear mechanical behaviour of cervical tissue causes unpredictable changes in measured elastograms when pressure is applied. These uncontrolled variables prevent the reliable measurement of tissue elasticity in a clinical setting. Measuring the nonlinear properties of tissue is difficult due to the need for both shear modulus and strain to be taken simultaneously. A simulation-based method is proposed in this paper to resolve this. This study describes the nonlinear behaviour of cervical tissue using the hyperelastic material models of Demiray–Fung and Veronda–Westmann. Elastograms from 33 low-risk patients between 18 and 22 weeks gestation were obtained. The average measured properties of the hyperelastic material models are: Demiray–Fung—A1α = 2.07 (1.65–2.58) kPa, α = 6.74 (4.07–19.55); Veronda–Westmann—C1C2 = 4.12 (3.24–5.04) kPa, C2 = 4.86 (2.86–14.28). The Demiray–Fung and Veronda–Westmann models performed similarly in fitting to the elastograms with an average root mean square deviation of 0.41 and 0.47 ms−1, respectively. The use of hyperelastic material models to calibrate shear-wave speed measurements improved the consistency of measurements. This method could be applied in a large-scale clinical setting but requires updated models and higher data resolution.

Basic investigation on identification of tissue composition based on propagation speeds of longitudinal and shear waves

The elastic modulus of tissue as a useful biomarker of disease detection can be quantitatively evaluated based on shear wave speed (SWS) measurements in shear wave elastography. Although the longitudinal wave speed (LWS) is also expected to be a promising biomarker for disease detection, the elasticity is not always dominant because the LWS is affected by the bulk modulus. In other words, LWS and SWS may reflect different tissue properties. Therefore, in this study, based on the improvement in LWS measurement, the relationship between the composition of a phantom mixed with agar and glycerol and ultrasonically measured LWS and SWS was investigated. The LWS had a good sensitivity in detecting glycerol, while the SWS had a good sensitivity in detecting agar. The calculated Poisson's ratio had a better sensitivity in detecting agar. In conclusion, a simultaneous measurement of LWS and SWS may help identify the tissue composition.

Shear Wave Tensiometry Tracks Reductions in Collateral Ligament Tension Due to Incremental Releases

Surgeons routinely perform incremental releases on overly tight ligaments during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to reduce ligament tension and achieve their desired implant alignment. However, current methods to assess whether the surgeon achieved their desired reduction in the tension of a released ligament are subjective and/or do not provide a quantitative metric of tension in an individual ligament. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to determine whether shear wave tensiometry, a novel method to assess tension in individual ligaments based on the speed of shear wave propagation, can detect changes in ligament tension following incremental releases. In seven medial and eight lateral collateral porcine ligaments (MCL and LCL, respectively), we measured shear wave speeds and ligament tension before and after incremental releases consisting of punctures with an 18-gauge needle. We found that shear wave speed squared decreased linearly with decreasing tension in both the MCL (r^2 avg = 0.76) and LCL (r^2 avg = 0.94). We determined that errors in predicting tension following incremental releases were 24.5 N and 12.2 N in the MCL and LCL, respectively, using specimen-specific calibrations. These results suggest shear wave tensiometry is a promising method to objectively measure the tension reduction in released structures. Clinical Significance: Direct, objective measurements of the tension changes in individual ligaments following release could enhance surgical precision during soft tissue balancing in TKA. Thus, shear wave tensiometry could help surgeons reduce the risk of poor outcomes associated with overly tight ligaments, including residual knee pain and stiffness.

Shear Properties of Earth's Inner Core

Understanding how Earth's inner core (IC) develops and evolves, including fine details of its structure and energy exchange across the boundary with the liquid outer core, helps us constrain its age, relationship with the planetary differentiation, and other significant global events throughout Earth's history, as well as the changing magnetic field. Since its discovery in 1936 and the solidity hypothesis in 1940, Earth's IC has never ceased to inspire geoscientists. However, while there are many seismological observations of compressional waves and normal modes sensitive to the IC's compressional and shear structure, the shear waves that provide direct evidence for the IC's solidity have remained elusive and have been reported in only a few publications. Further advances in the emerging correlation-wavefield paradigm, which explores waveform similarities, may hold the keys to refined measurements of all inner-core shear properties, informing dynamical models and strengthening interpretations of the IC's anisotropic structure and viscosity. ▪ What are the shear properties of the inner core, such as the shear-wave speed, shear modulus, shear attenuation, and shear-wave anisotropy? An Improved Tunnel-Track Model in Saturated Poroelastic Soils to a Moving Point Load

To predict the mechanical response of a circular cavity/tunnel buried in saturated poroelastic soils to a moving point load, a semianalytical model is provided in this work. The soils are governed by Biot’s theory that describes the wave propagations for saturated poroelastic materials. The displacement and stress vectors for the solid skeleton and pore-water fluid are represented by scalar and vectorial potentials. The governing equations for the tunnel and surrounding soils are solved in the frequency domain with the aid of separation of variables and Fourier transformations. To check the feasibility of the present analytical model, the solution is compared with other available results calculated for the ring load case. The good agreement shows the correctness of the present model. Numerical results suggest that the mechanical response from a moving point load in a tunnel for two-phase poroelastic materials is quite different from that in single-phase elastic materials. The critical velocity of the tunnel-soil system is around the shear wave speed of soils while the second one introduced into the track-tunnel-soil system with very high value is around the critical velocity of the track structure itself.

Three-dimensional Shear Wave Elastography Using a 2D Row Column Addressing (RCA) Array

Objective: To develop a 3D shear wave elastography (SWE) technique using a 2D row column addressing (RCA) array, with either external vibration or acoustic radiation force (ARF) as the shear wave source. Impact Statement: The proposed method paves the way for clinical translation of 3D-SWE based on the 2D RCA, providing a low-cost and high volume-rate solution that is compatible with existing clinical systems. Introduction: SWE is an established ultrasound imaging modality that provides a direct and quantitative assessment of tissue stiffness, which is significant for a wide range of clinical applications including cancer and liver fibrosis. SWE requires high frame-rate imaging for robust shear wave tracking. Due to the technical challenges associated with high volume-rate imaging in 3D, current SWE techniques are typically confined to 2D. Advancing SWE from 2D to 3D is significant because of the heterogeneous nature of tissue, which demands 3D imaging for accurate and comprehensive evaluation. Methods: A 3D SWE method using a 2D RCA array was developed with a volume-rate up to 2000 Hz. The performance of the proposed method was systematically evaluated on tissue-mimicking elasticity phantoms. Results: 3D shear wave motion induced by either external vibration or ARF was successfully detected with the proposed method. Robust 3D shear wave speed maps were reconstructed for both homogeneous and heterogeneous phantoms with inclusions. Conclusion: The high volume-rate 3D imaging provided by the 2D RCA array provides a robust and practical solution for 3D SWE with a clear pathway for future clinical translation.

Lithospheric Deformation at the South Island Oblique Collision, New Zealand

<p>Lithospheric deformation is investigated within the Southern Alps oblique collision zone of the Australian and Pacific plate boundary. Seismological methods and gravity modelling are used to estimate seismic anisotropy, wave-speed anomalies and mass anomalies in the uppermost mantle. While seismic anisotropy is generally interpreted to result from Cenozoic mantle shear, wave-speed and mass anomalies can be explained solely by thermal contraction of mantle rocks that results from the downward deflection of isotherms during mantle shortening. Along the eastern Southern Alps foothills and approximately 15' clockwise from their axis, earthquake Pn waves propagate at 8.54 +/- 0.20 km/s. This high wave speed is attributed to a high average Pn speed (8.3 +/- 0.3 km/s) and Pn anisotropy (7 - 13 %) in the mantle lid beneath central South Island. Two-dimensional ray-tracing suggests that the crustal thickness is 48 +/- 4 km beneath the Southern Alps' southern extent near Wanaka (western Otago). Such a thickness represents an 18 +/- 4 km thick crustal root that is thicker than necessary to isostatically sustain the approximately 1000 m topographic load of this region. A mass excess is proposed in the mantle below the region of over-thickened crust to compensate for the crustal root mass deficit. Assuming that the crustal root represents a -300 kg/m3 density contrast with the mantle lid, this mantle mass excess requires a minimum density contrast of 35 +/- 5 kg/m3, 110 +/-20 km width and 70 +/- 20 km thickness that will impart a downward pull on the overlying crust.</p>
