Based on the measured spectra of rail roughness and track structures longitudinal roughness, the rail grinding limit is studied with the help of an established coupled dynamic metro vehicle–track model and a rolling contact fatigue model. The results indicate that metro rail grinding control should be regulated according to corrugation wavelength range and operating speed. Based on the rolling contact fatigue model, longer wavelength of rail corrugation has less influence on the wheel rolling contact fatigue. For the metro lines with a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h, the average levels of rail corrugation in the wavelength ranges of 30–65 mm, 65–125 mm, and 125–250 mm should be less than 5.4, 24.8, and 33.8 dB re 1 μm, respectively; for the ones with the operating speed of 80–120 km/h, the corresponding average corrugation levels in the three wavelength ranges should be less than 4.4, 9.8, and 29.8 dB re 1 μm, respectively.

Abstract The interaction and surface features between point contact surfaces composed of longitudinal roughness with infinite or finite length and transverse roughness were discussed based on a transient non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model. Each surface shape is greatly affected by the difference in elastic moduli, thermal conductivities, and velocities of both contact surfaces. There is a large difference in pressure behavior when the transverse roughness is in contact with the longitudinal roughness with finite length and when it is in contact with the longitudinal roughness with infinite length. In the contact between surfaces with infinitely long longitudinal and transverse roughness, the friction coefficient is lower when the surface with longitudinal roughness has a low thermal conductivity than when it has a high thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the pressure fluctuation is larger when the transverse roughness surface has a high thermal conductivity than when it has a low thermal conductivity.

Abstract In order to clarify the effect of thermal conductivity on non-Newtonian thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) in the point contact with longitudinal roughness on one surface or on both surfaces, numerical calculations are carried out. The contact is formed by ceramics and steel. The surface shapes of both contact solids are investigated separately. It was found that the pressure at ridges shows lower than that at grooves when the speed of a material with low thermal conductivity is faster than that of a material with high thermal conductivity. In the opposite case, such a phenomenon never occurs. This abnormal pressure variation is largely affected by the combination of contact materials and running conditions.

Purpose of the present theoretical investigation is to analyze the effects of surface roughness on the steady-state performance of stepped circular hydrostatic thrust bearings lubricated with non-Newtonian Rabinowitsch type fluids. Results for film pressure and load-carrying capacity have been plotted and analyzed on the basis of numerical results. To take the effects of surface roughness into account, Christensen theory of rough surface has been adopted. The expression for pressure gradient has been derived by means of the energy integral approach. This approach avoids the derivation of Reynolds’ equation. The numerical results for film pressure and load capacity have been obtained using Mathematica. It was observed that in comparison with smooth surfaces, dimensionless film pressure and load capacity is lower for longitudinal roughness and higher for circular roughness patterns with and the variations are significant. Load carrying capacity decreases with the increase of longitudinal roughness and, increases with the increase of circular roughness. Further, the effects of surface roughness and non-Newtonian lubricants are significant for larger values of inertia parameter. Because of the closeness of results to the experimental values, this study will be helpful in the design of circular hydrostatic thrust bearings.

This article discusses the effect of longitudinal roughness on the performance of hydromagnetic squeeze film in circular step bearing. To characterize the random roughness of the bearing surfaces the stochastic model of Christensen and Tonder has been employed. The stochastically averaged Reynolds’ type equation is solved using suitable boundary conditions to obtain the pressure distribution and then the load bearing capacity is computed. The results are presented in graphical form. The graphical results presented here establish that the hydromagnetic lubrication offers significant help to the longitudinal roughness pattern to enhance the performance of the bearing system. Of course, conductivities of the plates, standard deviation, and the supply pressure contribute towards reducing the negative effect induced by variance (+ve) and skewness (+ve).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the elastohydrodynamic lubrication point contact problem with bio-based oil as lubricants for an isothermal case. The simulation of the problem is analyzed on smooth and rough asperity. Design/methodology/approach The modified Reynolds equation is discretized using finite difference and multigrid method with full approximation scheme (FAS), applied for its solution with varying load and speed. Findings This paper traces out the comparison of minimum and central film thickness with the standard formulation of Hamrock and Dowson. The effect of longitudinal roughness on surfaces is investigated by means of numerical simulations. Originality/value The results obtained are comparable with the standard results, and are shown by graphs and tables. Bio-based products bring out an alternative source of lubricant to reduce energy crises.
