New graduates interested in entering industry and individual contributors already in industry have little to no transparency into the life of a research manager. The industry professionals on this panel are all managers who oversee other researchers (and some of whom still continue to perform research themselves). Each manager has a very different set of roles and responsibilities and took a different pathway to arrive at where they are today. They will share insights around what management does and does not entail, discuss various ways one may become a manager (as well as the motivations), and break down types of teams managers may lead throughout their careers.

Many academic analyses of good practice in the use of bibliometric data address only technical aspects and fail to account for and appreciate user requirements, expectations, and actual practice. Bibliometric indicators are rarely the only evidence put before any user group. In the present state of knowledge, it is more important to consider how quantitative evaluation can be made simple, transparent, and readily understood than it is to focus unduly on precision, accuracy, or scholarly notions of purity. We discuss how the interpretation of ‘performance’ from a presentation using accurate but summary bibliometrics can change when iterative deconstruction and visualization of the same dataset is applied. From the perspective of a research manager with limited resources, investment decisions can easily go awry at governmental, funding program, and institutional levels. By exploring select real-life data samples we also show how the specific composition of each dataset can influence interpretive outcomes.

The increasing spread and rising profile of publicly engaged research in the UK has been accompanied by the emergence of a new, specialized professional services role embedded within research project teams. With this in mind, the Public Engagement Professionals in University Research Network convened a survey and workshop in 2017 to critically examine the skills and experiences of individuals in administrative roles in such projects. This paper argues that this is a highly skilled role that blurs boundaries between academic, administrator and engagement professional, but within higher education institutions it is often poorly understood and, therefore, undervalued and unsupported.
