Cathode samples of titanium-based nanodiamond field emission were prepared by electrophoresis dispersed solutions in different formulas. Observe the surface and structure of the coating by using metaloscope, microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD); Test the field emission characteristic after annealing; Analyze the relation between the samples’ light photos and the uniformity of coating; Discuss the mechanism of the improved field emission characteristic after annealing. Under the same conditions the surface uniformity of diamond coating prepared by isobutyl alcohol is best,it is the minimum threshold electric field emission, 5.5 V/μm, the current density can reach to 85μA/cm2 at the field of 15V/μm. Field emission characteristic and luminescence could be best after annealing.

A flat plate model are employed to investigate the development mechanism of the initial electrons along the insulation surface in this paper, and the field emission properties of pollutant (NaCl) and water (H2O) adsorbed on the copper electrode are studied. The voltage when partial arc occurs is computed and a flat plate experiment is carried out to validate the computing results. Results indicate that pollutant and water have an important impact on the field emission, where pollutant is more significant than water. Meanwhile, the pollutant and water can increase the probability to form the partial arc.

Using carbon nanotubes as field emitters, the field emission display panel with branched cathode electrode was fabricated. For the cathode faceplate, the branched cathode electrode was composed of the emitter conducting layer and the emitter supporting layer. On the emitter supporting layer surface the carbon nanotubes field emitters were prepared, and the emitter conducting layer would be covered with the emitter insulation layer. The applied cathode potential would be conducted by the emitter conducting layer, which could decrease the additional voltage drop. The good field emission characteristic for the fabricated field emission display panel was confirmed.

Using carbon nanotube as field emitter, the field emission display (FED) panel with rectangular luminous layer was fabricated. The etched indium tin oxide (ITO) film was used as the ITO electrodes, and the phosphor powder was prepared to form the phosphor layer, so the rectangular luminous layer was fabricated on the anode back plane. In one anode pixel, the three anode sub-pixels would be included, which would reside on the same ITO electrode surface. The insulation layer would separate the adjacent anode sub-pixels and the adjacent ITO electrode, and the fabricated anode extension line was mainly used to reduce the excessive voltage drop. The FED panel with rectangular luminous layer possessed good field emission characteristic and high image brightness.
