Calibration of the Latest Generation Superconducting Gravimeter iGrav-043 Using the Observatory Superconducting Gravimeter OSG-CT040 and the Comparisons of Their Characteristics at the Walferdange Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics, Luxembourg

In December 2019, the latest generation transportable superconducting gravimeter (SG) iGrav-043 purchased by the University of Bonn was installed in the Walferdange Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics (WULG) in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In this paper, we estimate the calibration factor of the iGrav-043, which is essential for long-term gravity monitoring. We used simultaneously collected gravity data from the un-calibrated iGrav-043 and the calibrated Observatory superconducting gravimeter OSG-CT040 that operates continuously at WULG since 2002. The tidal analysis provides a simple way to transfer the calibration factor of one SG to the other. We then assess and compare tidal analyses, instrumental drifts and high frequency noises. After 20 years of continuous operation, the instrumental drift of the OSG-CT040 is almost zero. From 533 days of joint operation, we found that the instrumental drift of iGrav-043 exhibits a composite behavior: just after the setup and for two months a fast exponential decrease of 171 nm s−2, then a linear with a rate of 66 nm s−2 ± 10 nm s−2 per year. We suggest that a period of 3 months is sufficient for calibrating the iGrav. Accidental electrical power cuts triggered slight differences in the reaction and recovery of the OSG-CT040 and iGrav-043. However, it has been found that the long-term linear behavior of the drift was not affected.

Large-Scale Study of Antibody Titer Decay following BNT162b2 mRNA Vaccine or SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Immune protection following either vaccination or infection with SARS-CoV-2 is thought to decrease over time. We designed a retrospective study, conducted at Leumit Health Services in Israel, to determine the kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies following administration of two doses of BNT162b2 vaccine, or SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals. Antibody titers were measured between 31 January 2021, and 31 July 2021 in two mutually exclusive groups: (i) vaccinated individuals who received two doses of BNT162b2 vaccine and had no history of previous infection with COVID-19 and (ii) SARS-CoV-2 convalescents who had not received the vaccine. A total of 2653 individuals fully vaccinated by two doses of vaccine during the study period and 4361 convalescent patients were included. Higher SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody titers were observed in vaccinated individuals (median 1581 AU/mL IQR [533.8–5644.6]) after the second vaccination than in convalescent individuals (median 355.3 AU/mL IQR [141.2–998.7]; p < 0.001). In vaccinated subjects, antibody titers decreased by up to 38% each subsequent month while in convalescents they decreased by less than 5% per month. Six months after BNT162b2 vaccination 16.1% subjects had antibody levels below the seropositivity threshold of <50 AU/mL, while only 10.8% of convalescent patients were below <50 AU/mL threshold after 9 months from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study demonstrates individuals who received the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine have different kinetics of antibody levels compared to patients who had been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with higher initial levels but a much faster exponential decrease in the first group.

Resistive Switching in CdTe/CdSe Core–Shell Quantum Dots Embedded Chitosan-Based Memory Devices

In this paper, we report on the resistive switching (RS) and conduction mechanisms in devices consisting of CdTe/CdSe core–shell quantum dots embedded chitosan composites active layer. Two devices with active layers sandwiched between (1) Al and Ag, and (2) ITO and Ag electrodes were studied. Both devices exhibited bipolar memory behavior with [Formula: see text] V and [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]V, for the Al-based device, while [Formula: see text] V and [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]V were observed for the ITO-based device, enabling both devices to be operated at low powers. However, the switching mechanisms of both devices were different, i.e., RS in Al device was attributed to conductive bridge mechanism, while space-charge-limited driven conduction filament attributed the switching mechanism of the ITO device. Additionally, the Al-based device showed long retention ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]s) and a reasonable large ([Formula: see text]) ON/OFF ratio. Additionally, for this device, we also observed sweeping cycle-induced reversal of voltage polarity of the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. In contrast, we observed that increasing sweeping cycles resulted in an exponential decrease of the OFF-state resistance of the ITO-based device.

Decrease of heart rate variability during exercise: an index of cardiorespiratory fitness

The present study proposes to measure and quantify the heart rate variability (HRV) changes during effort and to test the capacity of the produced indices to predict cardiorespiratory fitness measures. Therefore, the beat-to-beat cardiac time interval series of 18 adolescent athletes (15.2 +- 2.0 years) measured during maximal graded effort test were detrended using a dynamical first-order differential equation model. Heart rate variability was then calculated as the standard deviation of the detrended RR intervals within successive windows of one minute. The variation of this measure of HRV during exercise is properly adjusted by an exponential decrease of the heart rate. The amplitude and the decay rate of this exponential trend are strongly associated with maximum oxygen consumption, maximal aerobic power, and ventilatory thresholds. It indicates that among athletes with better fitness, HRV has higher values at low heart rate and decreases faster when the heart rate increases during exercise. This analysis, based only on cardiac measurements, provides a promising tool for the study of cardiac measurements generated by portable devices.

Effect of Loading Angles and Implant Lengths on the Static and Fatigue Fractures of Dental Implants

Mechanical properties play a key role in the failure of dental implants. Dental implants require fatigue life testing before clinical application, but this process takes a lot of time. This study investigated the effect of various loading angles and implant lengths on the static fracture and fatigue life of dental implants. Implants with lengths of 9 mm and 11 mm were prepared. Static fracture tests and dynamic fatigue life tests were performed under three loading angles (30°, 40°, and 50°), and the level arm and bending moment were measured. After that, the fracture morphology and fracture mode of the implant were observed. The results showed that 9 mm length implants have a higher static failure load and can withstand greater bending moments, while 11 mm length implants have a longer fatigue life. In addition, as the loading angle increases, the static strength and bending moment decrease linearly, and the fatigue life shows an exponential decrease at a rate of three times. Increasing the loading angle reduces the time of the implant fatigue test, which may be an effective method to improve the efficiency of the experiment.

Speeding-up while growing-up: Synchronous functional development of motor and non-motor processes across childhood and adolescence

Describing the maturation of information processing in children is fundamental for developmental science. Although non-linear changes in reaction times have been well-documented, direct measurement of the development of the different processing components is lacking. In this study, electromyography was used to quantify the maturation of premotor and motor processes on a sample of 114 children (6–14 years-old) and 15 adults. Using a model-based approach, we show that the development of these two components is well-described by an exponential decrease in duration, with the decay rate being equal for the two components. These findings provide the first unbiased evidence in favour of the common developmental rate of nonmotor and motor processes by directly confronting rates of development of different processing components within the same task. This common developmental rate contrasts with the differential physical maturation of region-specific cerebral gray and white matter. Tentative paths of interpretation are proposed in the discussion.

Radiology Performed Fluoroscopy-Guided Lumbar Punctures Decrease Volume of Diagnostic Study Interpretation – Impact on Resident Training and Potential Solutions

Objectives: Lumbar punctures performed in radiology departments have significantly increased over the last few decades and are typically performed in academic centers by radiology trainees using fluoroscopy guidance. Performing fluoroscopy-guided lumbar punctures (FGLPs) can often constitute a large portion of a trainee’s workday and the impact of performing FGLPs on the trainee’s clinical productivity (i.e. dictating reports on neuroradiology cross-sectional imaging) has not been studied. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the number of FGLPs performed and cross-sectional neuroimaging studies dictated by residents during their neuroradiology rotation (NR). Material and Methods: The number of FGLPs and myelograms performed and neuroimaging studies dictated by radiology residents on our neuroradiology service from July 2008 to December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The relationship between the number of FGLPs performed and neuroimaging studies (CT and MRI) dictated per day by residents was examined. Results: Radiology residents (n = 84) performed 3437 FGLPs and myelograms and interpreted 33402 cross-sectional studies. Poisson regression demonstrated an exponential decrease in number of studies dictated daily with a rising number of FGLPs performed (P = 0.0001) and the following formula was derived: Number of expected studies dictated per day assuming no FGLPs × e-0.25 x number of FGLPs = adjusted expected studies dictated for the day. Conclusion: We quantified the impact performing FGLPs can have on the number of neuroimaging reports residents dictate on the NR. We described solutions to potentially decrease unnecessary FGLP referrals including establishing departmental guidelines for FGLP referrals and encouraging bedside lumbar punctures attempts before referral. We also emphasized equally distributing the FGLPs among trainees to mitigate procedural burden.

Estimation of the Probability of Cracking of Facade Coatings

Information on the stress state of protective and decorative coatings during the curing process, in particular on the cohesive state of destruction, is given. The influence of the type of substrate on the change in internal stresses in the coating is considered. It was revealed that the greatest value of shear stresses is observed in coatings on a heavyweight concrete substrate. The subsequent increase in temperature after curing to 50°C leads to an increase in the value of the normal stresses. The probability of cracking of coatings during thermal aging is estimated. It was revealed that during aging there is an exponential decrease in the cohesive strength of coatings and an increase in internal stresses. Aging tends to increase the likelihood of cracking of coatings. The change in stresses in coatings as a result of seasonal fluctuations in air temperature is considered.
